Old Fairhaven Association member Stephanie Johnson organized a long desired improvement to our Historic Fairhaven ambience - improve the beauty of the hillside next to our Veterans Memorial Flag. And Mike Hamas again volunteered his Ram Construction to bring in the heavy equipment and do the work. It all happened quickly on Thursday - as the old embedded ivy was scraped out and clean soil spread over the site. It will be covered for the summer and a new planting of perennials put in next fall when the rains start. Stephanie, who is a realtor at Keller Williams, pitched in with shoveling, as did Mike himself. Avenue Bread donated breakfast to the crew. It was a community effort. Even Bellingham Parks worked with the OFA to grant a permit without a lot of red tape. The land is all on city street right of way, although the Association is hoping it can all be turned to city park someday. The Association maintains the area along with the flag. A word about the flag. The mechanism inside the pole has some rust problems that have prevented the flag from flying this spring. We fully intend for this to be fixed and the flag flying for Memorial Day. Awesome Girls Night OutFriday, May 11
Girls Night Out was an incredible success this evening, with hundreds of women - and some men - making it a success. The event is a fundraiser for the Peace Health Cancer Research Center in Bellingham. Auctions, raffles and a fashion show plus music, great food treats - Papa’s Sweets was there - and group photos by Mark Turner. Above is the fashion show just getting underway in the dome room of the Alaska Ferry Terminal. MCs Shannon Day and Brian Finnegan kept the fun chatter going all evening. This was the 7th annual of GNO and it has slowly evolved over the years, with this year being the biggest yet. A tip of the hat to the Old Fairhaven Association and their organizers Cathy Lee, Pamela Felke, Katie Swanson, Shannon Day, David Starr and several others.
The upper level of the Ferry Terminal as folks filled out silent auction forms, sampled sweets, enjoyed drinks, and bought raffles for everything from cupcakes, nights for two at hotels, dinner at Fairhaven restaurants, bicycles and most everything you might like to win. The color of the evening was pink and the theme was “Lets Get Physlcal” and the 1980s.
Earlier in the evening, fun things were happening up in the Fairhaven historic district. At Skylark’s restaurant, for a donation to cancer research, the girls had their photos taken with local firemen who were donating their time. You can check the Girls Night Out website for more information. And plan to attend the 8th annual GNO in 2013. Urban Living in Historic FairhavenTuesday, May 8
A quiet and relaxing roof top patio garden is one of the enjoyable benefits of living at the Fairhaven Gardens Condos. Located in the heart of the historic district, this five story condo complex has several roof top patio gardens. This one is on the third floor and they are also on the fourth and fifth floors. This garden is also award winning. For the second year, the Whatcom County in Bloom gave the condo its First Place for apartments/condominiums. First in the county. We congratulate the owner/residents for their recognition. And a tip of the hat to the builder of this interesting condo, David Ebenal and his Ebenal General construction company. There are several condo buildings either in the historic district or within a block or two. Living is slower in Fairhaven and the district is a fun place to live. There are frequent book readings at Village Books, dining at over a dozen restaurants, events on the Village Green, and the transportation center down by the waterfront for Amtrak and Greyhound, plus San Juan cruises in the San Juan Islands. All within easy walking distance. Living in Fairhaven - in beautiful buildings. Pretty nice. Great fun at Dirty Dan Day Seafood FestivalSunday, April 29
Cupcake eating contests could be considered a spectator sport. At least on the annual Dirty Dan Day in Fairhaven. Here we see the adult contest sponsored each year by Katie’s Cupcakes on Harris Avenue. A lot of folks came down to Fairhaven to enjoy great seafood and dishes and some fun contests. Besides cupcakes, there was the salmon toss, Dirty Dan look-a-like and the 1890s dress to impress. We thank many for the success of this day. First, though, we thank the weather. The sun came out and the day warmed up. By Northwest standards, it was a premium day. We also thank Anna Williams and her staff of Jordan, Carla, Ellen and Hillary. We thank the Granges from Haynie, Rome and Ten Mile for volunteering all day. We thank Ram Construction for their help. And we thank the 10 restaurants that participated in the Chuckanut Chowder Cookoff. |
