Sycamore Square is one of Fairhaven’s Finest<< Back to archives | Tuesday, July 6, 2010
click photo for larger view The early morning light shows off the beautiful 1890 brick facade on Sycamore Square. It was built as Fairhaven prepared to be the Puget Sound terminus of the Great Northern railroad and has served Fairhaven with business offices for 120 years. Today, 12th Street Shoes is located in the prime street level corner location and Mambo Italiano restaurant is on the main 12th Street side. Upstairs is the Black Cat restaurant and over 20 business offices. The real delight is the huge open atrium in the center of the building - a must see for anyone visiting Fairhaven for the first time. See photo below. When built it was known as The Mason Block, after Allen Mason the owner. In the early 1970s, Ken Imus bought it and thoroughly renovated it, adding a fourth floor between the first and second floors. You would never guess today that he did that when you explore the atrium. In the 1990s, Patrick Uy bought the building and further renovated it, further improving the interior, adding an elevator and hanging many historical photos to the public walls. Today this fine building serves many businesses and is a one of the 10 notable historic buildings in Fairhaven.
