New Maritime Museum In Fairhaven

Boats have been built in Fairhaven for over 100 years - and many have been unique. Now a museum has been started by several people and firms to showcase those boats - pleasure, working and military. Uniflite was the firm most of us knew since the 1950s that was a world leader in the development of fiberglass boats and several of their craft are starting the collection.

Above is a 17-foot runabout built in the 1950s of fiberglass by Uniflite. It is on loan from a private owner to the museum. Behind it are two military craft - a river patrol boat from the Vietnam war era on the left and a hovercraft on the right.

Open every third Saturday of each month from 9:30 am to 1 pm. This past weekend saw the initial opening of the museum. You can check their website - www.bimmus.org - for more information.
