Victoria to FairhavenFriday, April 25, 2003
Follow the rowers progress on a special page. Our modern day Dan Harris, aka Tip Johnson, and row organizer Dale McKinnon, are shown in the upper left of this aerial photo, rowing along Lummi Island about 1 pm today. They are headed for Inati Bay, where they will spend the night. In the bottom right is the 43-foot catamaran Gato Verde, which is acting as mother duck or support base for the rowers. You can read more about their progress from Victoria to Fairhaven on a special page with additional photos. Fairhaven in the NewsThursday, April 24, 2003
The Bellingham Herald photographer is up in the cherry picker taking this photo of KGMI radio personalities Brett Bonner and Debbie Schuitema presenting a $1,700 check from money they raised on the air for new street banners. It was an unusually cold and rainy day. The opposite photo should appear in Friday’s Bellingham Herald. Dan Harris Commemorative Row from Victoria to FairhavenWednesday, April 23, 2003
Follow the rower’s progress on a special page. Tip Johnson, dressed as Dan Harris, starts his four-day row from Victoria to Fairhaven this afternoon. It was 150 years ago that Dan Harris rowed over and founded our community. Tip will arrive this Saturday at 2:00 pm, landing at Harris Ave in Fairhaven. He will be greeted by Bellingham Mayor Mark Asmundson, the Fairhaven Middle School Marching Band and all who want to join. He will then walk up Harris Avenue to the new Village Green and unveil the bronze statue of Dan Harris. Ladies of the Evening SocietyThursday, April 10, 2003
Today, Fairhaven’s “Ladies of the Evening Society” pays homage to those great women who helped build the Fairhaven district in the 1800s. Photos will be available with the “Ladies” during the dedication of Fairhaven Village Green on Saturday, April 26th, from 1:00-3:00. Donations from the photos will benefit the Fairhaven Marketing Fund. Outside Dining TimeFriday, April 4, 2003
At Jacci’s Fish & Chips they are serving lunch outside in the warm sunshine. Here, Kaimi is preparing the tables, and her attire gives away how warm it is. Fairhaven is always warmer than surrounding areas because of the protection of South Hill and the west-facing hillside it is built on. All over Fairhaven, the outside tables are again in use for lunch or coffee. Our count is 9 restaurants with outside tables within two blocks of each other. Relaxing on the GreenWednesday, April 2, 2003
The new Village Green provides many benches and quiet places to relax. Enjoy the sun, read, watch people looking for their names on the pavers. With the covered pergolas, a person can enjoy a quiet and dry bench on any day. Checking It OutWednesday, March 26, 2003
People are checking out the new Village Green. But they walk slowly, heads bowed, looking down. It is almost humorous to watch. They are reading names on the brick pavers. There are 1,580 pavers that people bought and had inscribed with the name or names of a special person(s). Some are looking for the paver they bought. You have to look - there is no map. The Village Green is OpenSaturday, March 22, 2003
Serious business. This fellow is working the foot-operated water pump. In theory, it is a pet watering bowl, but no pet is required for kids to have fun with it. Village Green is OpenFriday, March 21, 2003
About 3 pm today the construction fencing came down. The Village Green is now open for all of us to enjoy. Above is a fellow enjoying a coffee under the glass-roofed pergola. The comfortable park bench is dry while the soft spring rain falls. Come on down and enjoy our new public square. Coming from the north…Wednesday, March 19, 2003
...we suddenly today…
...sign for our district.
Courtesy of Whidbey Island Bank. Done on steel and riveted to the building, this bright sign will now welcome all driving south on Finnegan’s Way into Fairhaven. We who live here know where Fairhaven is. Visitors don’t always know exactly when they have reached the district - and can pass through still looking for it. Thanks, Whidbey Island Bank, and thanks to Coenraad and Barbara Zielstra, the building owners. New Fairhaven Bike BuildingFriday, March 14, 2003
This spring, ground will be broken for a new building to be home to Fairhaven Bike and Mountain Sports. It will be right across the street from their present shop up on 11th. In the rendering above, you can see Eclipse Books to the right of the building. The second floor will be an office rental space with a perfect view of the bay and islands. Congrats to John Hauter who has been running the bike shop for over 30 years now. He started where the Harris Ave Cafe is, next to Tony’s Coffee Shop, back in 1971. SpringFriday, March 14, 2003
On the Village Green. Actually, she bought one of the bricks and had it inscribed with their names, and she just surprised him by showing it to him. And, you too can still buy a brick. Just go in to the Village Books and get one of the order forms. $50 each. Money supports upkeep of the Village Green. The fellow who inscribes them will be up in a few weeks to letter them right where they are set. When will that constuction fence come down? We expect just a few more days - till the railing and handrails are fully installed. SnowSaturday, March 8, 2003
Yep - snowing today. Our day of winter. Looking west down Harris Avenue from the 12th Street intersection. But tonight the warm south air will move in and by morning the temperature will be 50 degrees. Typical winter weather. New Market EntranceSaturday, March 8, 2003
The Fairhaven Market, our grocery store, has completed its new entrance. With snow falling today, this gabled walkway got a chance to show its benefits. Inside, the market is sporting new shelving, expanded expresso seating by the deli, and new expresso bar. Coming is an expanded houswares section and new lighting of aisles. We love it.
New EntryFriday, February 28, 2003
Our Fairhaven Market is getting a new entry. This more central and attractive entry is only one of many improvements being made this spring. New shelving, improved deli and expresso bar, more special displays - it all is most welcome by all of us. The Action at Tony’sTuesday, February 18, 2003
These young fellows are enjoying a gray day in cozy Tony’s Coffee shop. That’s a map of the Middle East spread on the table in this photo taken through the front window. We didn’t ask their opinion on anything. The coffee shops are the heart of Fairhaven on the winter days, with the temperature about 50 degrees. Besides Tony’s, there is the Colophon, D’Anna’s, Market Deli, Win’s and Skylarks - all within two blocks of each other. Would you believe…Thursday, January 23, 2003
... that the rusty steel skeleton will be shiny and rust-free in a few days? Here is the very beginning of sandblasting that started this morning. After 27 years of rusting, the unfinished structure is being completed. Shops and apartments. Would you believe…Monday, January 20, 2003
... that construction work has started on completing the skeleton? Ebenal Construction has bought the bones and will transform it into apartments and street-level shops. For over 25 years, this unfinished steel structure has been an eyesore. Now it will be finished and fit nicely next door to Sycamore Square on Harris Ave. Oh yes, we’ll bring you more photos as this gets under way. January in FairhavenFriday, January 10, 2003
Yes, that is a sailboat out there on Bellingham Bay. Looking down Harris Avenue on a warm sunny day. January in FairhavenTuesday, January 7, 2003
Tony’s Coffee Shop in Fairhaven. A warm, sunny January day. So nice to sit outside with the paper and a cup of coffee. Or inside with friends. If you don’t live in the Pacific Northwest, then we want you to think we took this photo last summer. It rains here in January - and all winter long. Right? Well, one of our secrets is these beautiful warm, sunny winter days. Fairhaven is perhaps its most charming this time of year, with the streets quieter and a slower pace to everything. Fairhaven Library Birthday PartySunday, December 15, 2002
It was a nice success on Saturday afternoon. December marks 98 years of the library, in that same building, serving our community. Several Fairhaven businesses contributed to make the party a success. Fairhaven Market bakery made a great cake and contributed punch mixes. Tony’s Coffee, the - the coffee. Rebecca’s Floral Shoppe, some great stuff for decorations. The Friends of the Fairhaven Library thanks all of them. This Interesting RepairMonday, November 11, 2002
fixes the bulge on the back side of the Waldron building. Owner Ken Imus is having the wall of the top two floors partially replaced. This is newsworthy because Ken has hopes to some day renovate this entire building. Built in 1891, the top two floors have never been occupied - not once in 110 years. But maybe some day soon. It is located across the street from Win’s Drive In. The Christmas Lights Were StrungMonday, November 11, 2002
through Fairhaven over the weekend. Don White, the owner of Skylark’s restaurant, takes the lead each year with other business owners to decorate the historic district. Here he is on Harris Avenue splicing wires against a backdrop of the beautiful street trees we so treasure. Gordy Tweit Takes the PhotosMonday, November 4, 2002
of little goblins, fairies and knights each Halloween. Here he is taking photos of the little ones. The photos are now posted in the Fairhaven Pharmacy window. In a couple weeks after that, they will be taken down and parents can stop by to pick up the photos. The photos are processed by Spinnaker Photo at no cost, so they deserve credit with Gordy for this generous gift to the children of Fairhaven. Gordy took photos of 618 children this year. We all thank you both. Scarecrow Aron BeattigerTuesday, October 29, 2002
is one of the spooky creatures who will greet the young ones on Halloween afternoon in Fairhaven. Aron works at Nature’s Window below 10th on Harris Avenue. Skylark’s Hidden Cafe Has the Halloween SpiritThursday, October 24, 2002
er, rather spiders. Owner Don White has gone all out to put his restaurant into the mood for the spooky day. His is one of many places kids can trick-or-treat on Halloween. First Concrete is PouredSaturday, October 12, 2002
for the retaining wall of the Village Green. A wall 3 feet high at this corner with Mill Ave will increase to 4 feet down at the back side of the Bead Bazarr building to allow the Green to be level. Good-bye to SummerSaturday, October 5, 2002
On this first gray autumn weekend, this photo is our good-bye to summer. The corner of Harris and 11th is sort of the emotional center of Fairhaven. The open air Lot of Flowers is a year-around business and provides a calm presence here. We’ll have more sunny days, but the shirtsleeve weather is behind us till next spring. New PostmastersTuesday, October 1, 2002
Jean Shea, left, and Kimberly Jacobsen are the new Postmasters for Fairhaven. They are in training this week, but are providing all window services each day starting at 10 am. Thanks, Cathy, for the Fine Service.Saturday, September 28, 2002
Cathy Weatherby ends her service as Fairhaven’s Postmaster. Friday was her last day. She will go on a short vacation to Australia and then be back at Paper Dreams - making that fine fudge and serving store customers. Larry is Building Our New Post OfficeWednesday, September 25, 2002
Larry Foster, owner of the Fairhaven Hardware, is constructing the new Post Office counter in his store. Ken Imus has provided the antique bank teller window. The Fairhaven Farmers MarketMonday, September 23, 2002
This Wednesday is this season’s last Fairhaven Farmers Market. It opens at 3 pm and runs until 7 pm in the parking lot at McKenzie and 11th. The ambience and fresh produce are both incredible. Treat yourself to a short afternoon break and come shop the Market on its last day. It will give you a real mental pickup - as good as a fine latte. The above photo was actually taken August 21 when the Market was still on the Village Green - before construction started. Village Green Construction BeginsThursday, September 19, 2002
Yesterday, the fencing went up and the transformation of the grassy area behind Village Books began. By March, it will be a very orderly Village Green - with level ground, steps, trellis and careful brick work. You can check the fund-raising website for a drawing of what the finished park will look like. See also the webpage that follows construction from today to completion. Whidbey Island Bank Grand OpeningThursday, September 19, 2002
What better way to open a new bank office than with good food and a social crowd. Yesterday, the new Whidbey Island Bank officially opened their “Fairhaven Financial Center”. The rain stopped and the skies cleared - a good omen. While this photo was taken, their office was also packed with Southside folks. Whidbey Island Bank Opens in FairhavenTuesday, September 17, 2002
Shown are the “tellers windows” at the new Fairhaven branch of the Whidbey Island Bank. Instead of the normal teller counters, customers at this bank take a comfortable chair and do deposits and withdrawals with a bank teller across a desk. The bank opened last week and is a full-service bank, including real estate lending and investment services. Shown above is branch manager Leanette Corwin - far right - and her staff. We welcome them to Fairhaven. The Finished MuralSaturday, September 14, 2002
A final photo of Lanny Little’s mural. Building owner Tim Imus commissioned the Welcome message for folks coming up Harris Ave from the Ferry Terminal. We have a series showing the painting process in August. There is also a large photo of the finished mural. You can see it on the 907 Harris building where the new Natures Window store is. Yep, that is old Dirty Dan Harris, the founder of Fairhaven, painted into that window. |
