Dirty Dan Harris DaySunday, April 25, 2004
A mellow time was had by all at the modest day celebrating the founder of Fairhaven. Chuck Dingee is shown providing us with a bit of guitar music. Several Fairhaven shops showed how their crafts and arts are made, with demonstrations under the pergola. Bocce ball was played on the center court of the Village Green. child + water = magicSaturday, April 24, 2004
With Dirty Dan Harris carefully watching over him, 4-year-old Ben experiments with hydraulic engineering at the pet-water fountain on the Village Green. Old Dan watches a lot of kids having fun on our pretty public square. A Quiet Moment in Tony’sSunday, April 18, 2004
A coffee break in Tony’s on a chilly spring day warms the heart. With the greenery of Penny’s ‘A Lot of Flowers’ out the window, the ambience of Tony’s is hard to beat. Actually, there are several warm coffee shops in Fairhaven, but I was showing my aunt Ta where custom-roasted coffee started in the Pacific Northwest. New Home for Fairhaven BikesSunday, April 11, 2004
Ready to move into his new store - you can see the empty sunlit showroom - John Hauter pauses with his family, friends and store staff for a photo on Saturday evening. Then it was all work ‘til very late Saturday night - walking new bicycles and carrying all the clothing and outdoor gear across the street from the old shop. For a larger view of photo, click here or on photo. Bocce Ball is Back for the SummerTuesday, April 6, 2004
Dan Harris watches the first game of Bocce Ball on the Village Green this year on Monday evening. We wondered when it would start. Brian Griffin and his Bowler Hat Society showed up at 5 pm and set up the courts. Any person - young or old, experienced or first-time player - is welcome to join them any Monday evening from now until—well, the last game last year was in the dark on a very cold November evening. View From Padden LagoonMonday, April 5, 2004
Historic Fairhaven buildings up the hill overlook the Padden Creek Marina. This time of year, the boatyard is busy prepping yachts for the boating season. Yachts from all over the Northwest come to Fairhaven for their high-quality work. Currently, there are vessels here from Oregon, Alaska, California and of course, Washington state. Classic Cars and SunshineMonday, March 29, 2004
A perfect day for hanging out, enjoying beautiful cars and meeting old friends. This is the 20th year the Elites Car Club of Bellingham has held what they call their “Leprechaun Daze” on the streets of Fairhaven. Classic cars lined Harris Avenue and 11th Street and just fit in perfect with the historic buildings. A perfect spring day. Annual Fairhaven Plant SaleSunday, March 28, 2004
A rainy morning was just routine spring weather for hundreds of folks at the annual Fairhaven Neighbors Tree & Plant Extravaganza. Held each spring, the event always features much-sought-after plants and trees. Our thanks to Ken Imus for allowing use of his parking lots at 11th and McKenzie streets. Lunch on the Cobblestone WalkThursday, March 25, 2004
Lunch at Skylark’s Hidden Cafe beneath the spring blossoms of the plum tree this week. The Cobblestone walk passes between 10th and 11th streets with quiet shops and ends at the Village Green. Typical spring weather has warm 60s and sunshine half the day and showers the other half. New Signage for an Old FriendTuesday, March 23, 2004
Dos Padres opened on Harris Avenue over 30 years ago and has been our Mexican Restaurant since then. Recently, owner Jim Altman has repainted the exterior and added new signage, adding to the south-of-the-border feel of the building. Inside, the neat old wooden tables are still being used and provide part of the charm of dining here. Nice work, Jim. Spring on the Village GreenThursday, March 11, 2004
Two girls frolic on the grassy green behind Village Books yesterday in the warm afternoon sunshine. This charming photo was taken by Taimi, who does much PR work for Fairhaven businesses from her Gorman Publicity firm. The weather this week has been both blustery and then incredibly warm and sunny. Yes, it is spring. Harris AvenueTuesday, March 9, 2004
We had a beautiful day today. Temp to 60 degrees. Sunnnnny. To continue on the Harris Ave theme, here is looking down hill from 13th at sunset. The center bricking for the old trolly tracks is plainly seen. The historic district is all on a gentle hill, dropping 100 feet down to the shoreline. Harris AvenueSunday, March 7, 2004
Our main street in Fairhaven, named after the founder of our community. This looks east, uphill from 10th Street. Some of the buildings date back to the 1890s, when it was thought Fairhaven had a chance to be the Puget Sound end of the railroad being built across the northern US. Seattle got the railroad and became a metropolis; Fairhaven retained its charm and small-town character. Sailing Bellingham Bay in FebruaryMonday, March 1, 2004
We sail all winter long on Bellingham Bay. I call it the best sailing test bed in the North America. Here, two boats - both 27 feet long - enjoy the afternoon breeze. That is Mount Constitution on Orcas Island in the San Juan Islands looming on the left horizon. This photo was taken from Boulevard Park, just a 10-minute walk on the waterfront trail from Fairhaven and about 5 miles north of the photo below.
10 Minutes From FairhavenFriday, February 27, 2004
Larrabee State Park, only 5 miles south of Fairhaven, is a favorite quiet place for all of us to go. Last weekend, with sunny warm weather, it was exquisite. On the horizon is Lummi Island, across Bellingham Bay. The park has miles of trails and many unique views. This week has been back to cold rain showers. Spring is close.
Transferring Scene to WatercolorsSunday, February 22, 2004
Silvie Tupa and Michael Heath took advantage of our false spring weather to sketch lower Harris Avenue. They will later finish them as watercolor paintings. Their work of mountain and island scenes are in Nature’s Window - the shop at far left in the photo - and will be displayed through May 9. The field is the site for the new complex of 100 condos to be started this spring. Other shops across the street are, from left, Fairhaven Hardware, Mud In Your Eye Pottery, The Chimney Sweep, Renaissance Celebration and - on the far right with green awnings - the Bead Bazaar at 10th and Harris. The New Village Books BuildingSaturday, February 21, 2004
This artist’s sketch shows how the building will look next fall when completed. Only in Fairhaven would the artist sketch a rainy day. The foundation is almost completed now, and Ebenal construction folks are determined to make it the most beautiful building in Fairhaven. The interior will carry forward the cozy charm of the present Village Books store. As you can see, the exterior will have beautiful window treatments. Besides the front door on 11th Street, you will also be able to enter off the Village Green in back. Fairhaven Shops #17Thursday, February 12, 2004
For 19 years now , the corner of 11th and Harris has been anchored by this florist, nursery and gift shop. Here, owner Penny shows off a bucket of fresh cut roses. Behind the modest shop is a beautiful hidden garden with statuary of all types for sale. Penny offers local deliveries and prepares rose arrangements and mixed floral bouquets. Music at the Fairhaven LibraryMonday, February 9, 2004
Jamie Laval, esteemed fiddle player of Celtic music, gave a beautiful presentation at the Fairhaven Library on Sunday evening. Hannsjoerg Scheid accompanied on guitar. This is the upstairs meeting room at our library, and it hosts many music and dance events. You can sample Jamie’s music at his website. We hope to see him back in Fairhaven. Fairhaven Shops #16Tuesday, January 27, 2004
Flowers are a winter treat in any room of our homes. Rebecca, with over 30 years of floral design experience, is shown here in her shop on Harris Avenue. She always has a wide selection ready for a carefully selected gift or for ‘grab and go’ on your way home with a surprise bouquet for your mate. Her shop hours are Mon - Sat 10-6. She is also buying as much as possible from the ‘Green Growers’ association. Valentine’s day is approaching, so you might want to pre-order a special bouquet. You can view previous shops in this continuing series. The Bowler Hat SocietyFriday, January 23, 2004
Actually, there are now over 100 members of this fun Fairhaven group. To join, you must have a bowler hat. Thats it. One of their fun activities is playing bocce ball on the Village Green. The society is planning a bocce tournament for June 19 and hopes 40 teams will enter. We will post full information on this website soon. Above, left to right, are Brian Griffin, Paul Landgren, Rick Wright, Marya Griffin, J. C. Hickman and Nancy and George Gale. Oh, and in the center is the statue of Dirty Dan Harris, the founder of Fairhaven. And Rick’s friendly dog. Fairhaven Shops #15Thursday, January 22, 2004
Local specialty foods such as Aldrich Farms jellies and jams, Holmquist hazelnuts, plus seasonings, marinades and oils are part of good living. Owner Katie Dillard opens her small shop seven days a week, making her delicious foods readily available to us. She also has fresh-baked biscotti - shown on the table. And she is adding new items every month. Her shop is on Harris Avenue next to Rebecca’s Flower shop. Pavers Will Be ReplacedThursday, January 15, 2004
Pavers within 10 feet of the construction site for the new Village Books building are being carefully taken out and put in storage. If left alone there, they would be damaged by the building construction. This photo is almost a public service announcement. Workers are carefully putting these Village Green pavers on skids, left, and then into storage until August or September. They will then be replaced in the exact places they were before. Why the exact places? Many of the pavers are inscribed with the names of contributors to the Village Green, and the contractors are committed to returning the area to its exact pre-construction condition. They will come off the skids in reverse order during replacement. In the background is the excavation in progress for the new Village Books building. Work is ramping up fast. Village Books Construction BeginsTuesday, January 13, 2004
It gets serious tomorrow. The new Village Books building construction starts Wednesday. Ebenal General Construction plans to do the same beautiful job they did on the just-completed Fairhaven Square - the old steel skeleton on Harris. The building will provide three floors of books, with a coffee shop overlooking the bay on the upper floor. On top will be two penthouse apartments. Of course, it will have our red brick historic ambience. Village Books will move in next September. Fairhaven Shops #14Sunday, January 11, 2004
Co-owner Ed stands amid furniture and accessories in their new showroom at 1208 13th, in the mini mall between Trek Video and the liquor store. He and his wife Linda are known for their shop at 1010 Harris and have just opened this new second space for their expanded line of furniture. They enjoy featuring seasonal specials and expect a shipment of very contemporary bar stools of various designs in the next week. And they always have new and changing accessories. Open Tuesday through Sunday. All shops in Fairhaven are locally owned. This series about them started during the holiday season and you can review the earlier featured shops on a special page. New Village Inn OwnersWednesday, January 7, 2004
Fairhaven Hospitality. Connie and Gene Shannon are the new owners of the Fairhaven Village Inn, across the street from the Village Green, in the very center of the Historic Fairhaven District. They will personally manage the hotel and are already working on new ideas to make it better for our guests who stay there. We welcome them to our community. And we tip our hat to Ken Imus, who saw the need for a hotel in Fairhaven, built the charming inn and got it operating these the past few years. Thanks Ken. Sledding on Harris AveMonday, January 5, 2004
The sidewalk in front of Tony’s coffee shop was a sledding hill today. We have a bright, sunny day with the temperature 20 degrees. Several sleds with kids on top really enjoyed the perfect icy sidewalk. The barista in Tony’s confirmed that hot chocolate sales were way up the past few days. Tonight - lest we forget - the temp is expected to hit a record low of 9 degrees. Not normal for us. The Real ThingSaturday, January 3, 2004
Early morning in Fairhaven today. 18 degrees and a cold north wind. The snow is staying. The streets are very slippery. The coffee shops will be doing a great business today, with hot chocolate a best treat. Forecast is sunny and colder this weekend with snow on Monday and then much warmer by Wednesday. Enjoy a hot chocolate. Fairhaven Shops #13Friday, January 2, 2004
On these long winter evenings, Trek provides us in Fairhaven with one of our basic entertainments - videos at home. Shop owner Rob sorts movies into dozens of categories, making it easy for us to find the type of movie we want. He carries plenty of copies of new releases and he and his staff are known for their quick service. Trek opened in 1984 when VHS movies were just starting to be available. Rob is now featured on KGMI radio each Thursday at 5:35 pm with his reviews of new movie releases. A Snowy Night in FairhavenTuesday, December 30, 2003
A beautiful snow is falling this late night in Fairhaven. We are looking down Harris Avenue, past the traffic light at 12th Street and towards the bay. ‘Tis only 30 degrees, but the snow is staying. We get these once or twice a year. This one will melt off tomorrow noon. And we’ll go back to our normal rain. But in the morning we will wake up to a winter wonderland. For a few hours. Season’s GreetingsThursday, December 25, 2003
From us to you and yours, may this traditional time of year for thanksgiving, celebration and renewed promise be all that you desire.
The statue of Dan Harris, the founder of Fairhaven, is the recipient of many fun accessories. He wears them all with his normal aplomb. What is nice is the neat thinking by anonymous donors - always in season and always with taste. Fairhaven Shops #12Tuesday, December 23, 2003
Last minute shopping? Buying books is a good solution. Village Books will be open ‘til 6 pm on Christmas Eve - as are many other shops in Fairhaven. Above, co-owner Chuck Robinson stands by their selection of coffee table books, including the new local history book “Looking Back”, shown in the lower right corner. Village Books will be open for regular hours on Friday, December 26 and through the weekend - as will most all the shops and restaurants in Fairhaven. Fairhaven Shops #11Monday, December 22, 2003
