The Grinch is prowling Historic Fairhaven

Saturday, December 15, 2007

We don’t want to startle anyone, but do these folks at Fairhaven Toy Garden realize who has just crashed their nice little holiday crafting party?  Hello, is anyone paying attention?  Someone should tell them.  The Grinch is going to be making one more appearance next Saturday, Dec 22, at Village Books, so stop on by.  The little ones can get a holiday photo taken with the Grinch. Hours are 12 noon to 4 pm.  The photo is $10 and a digital image is put on a CD so you can print it at home.  The net proceeds go to Blue Skies For Children in Whatcom County.

Aisling Eyewear opens Saturday morning

Friday, November 30, 2007

A great new eyewear boutique is opening in the new Young Building on McKenzie Avenue.  Above, owners Kate and Carrie pause at one of their display tables in their new shop.  Kate is a professionally licensed optician.  They offer an exclusive selection of handcrafted and limited production frames and sunglasses from all over the world that can not be found anywhere else in Bellingham.  Such names as La Font, Spectacle Eyeworks, l.a. eyeworks, Derome Brenner, and many more will be on display.  We welcome them to Fairhaven.  They are the second shop in the new Young building at the corner of 11th and McKenzie.

A Holiday Card photo in the making

Thursday, November 29, 2007

Dirty Dan seems to appreciate the warm scarf around his neck for this photo.  The folks from Nutraceutical Corp., who have offices in the 12th Street Village, are having that camera on the tiny tripod take their photo.  For their Christmas card.  And it looks like it will be a fun card.  Dan is an in demand fellow for photos on a year round basis - just as sculptor Bob McDermott intended and hoped.

Holiday lights sparkle throughout Fairhaven

Monday, November 26, 2007

The big tree behind Skylark’s Hidden Cafe is a sparkling delight again this holiday season.  We had heard Don White was not sure if he could again get to all the branches - but is sure looks like he did.  All over the historic district are white lights strung around buildings and from tree to tree along the streets.  We invite you to do your Christmas shopping in Fairhaven.  We have two full toy stores and many others have great gifts for kids.  Village Books has more than books and Paper Dreams has perhaps the largest selection of cards in the area.  Plus the shops that have local made crafts such as practical pottery at Mud In Your Eye.  And walking the sidewalks of the historic district is just plain fun because of the genuine ambience.  Come on down.  Enjoy our district.

Gallery Walk adds new fun events

Saturday, November 24, 2007

The Grinch is in Fairhaven.  In the bottom floor of Village Books, to be exact.  On Saturday again from 5 to 8 pm he allows little ones to have their photo taken with him.  Here Jake and Kobe try to smile as they sit with the horrible fellow.  Photos of kids are burned on a disc for printing at home.  A small fee is required. After this weekend, Grinch photos will be taken from 12 to 4 pm each Saturday up to Christman, Dec 1, 8,15 and 22.  A great holiday opportunity for all parents and kids.

One of the oldest shops in Fairhaven is the Good Earth Pottery which dates back to the early 1970s.  Still today it is filled with fine pieces as a display and sales room for several local crafts persons.  The Gallery Walk and Open House in over 40 Historic District shops continues Saturday evening from 5 to 9 pm. Holiday lights, caroling, refreshments and fully stocked shops make for a fun time.  Come on down.

New this year is a Holiday Faire in the basement of the Nelson Block building at Harris and 11th.  Many local freelance artists are showing and selling their work.  Check the Days/ Hours; Nov. 23, 24 & Dec.1--11am-8pm; Dec. 2-- 11am-5pm.  The entrances to the huge basement area are well marked kitty corner from A Lot of Flowers.

Beautiful Fairhaven Harbor Condos in planning

Thursday, November 15, 2007

Down on Harris, between 8th and 9th Streets, a new three building complex of condos, townhouses and first floor commercial shops is being planned.  Ted Mischaikov has submitted these plans to Bellingham Planning for approval.  Above is the view of the buildings as seen along Harris Avenue.  The taller one is only 8 floors - much lower than an earlier plan with 10.  This is Ted’s fourth submission for this project as he tries to respect the concerns of residents and other commercial property owners.  The style combines the red brick of Fairhaven historic buildings with contemporary lines and windows.

Halloween in Historic Fairhaven

Wednesday, October 31, 2007

Smart kids - hit the candy shop for treats.  Actually, over a thousand kids hit over 50 shops and restaurants in Fairhaven for candies this afternoon and early evening.  And we noticed a trend - more grownups were in costumes - and a lot of great costumes.

Harris Avenue was the most packed with little goblins leading their parents from door to door.  Each Halloween the historic district welcomes the little ones from 3 to 6 pm.

Most kids know this fine fellow - Gordy Tweit, our retired Fairhaven Pharmacist, takes hundreds of photos each Halloween of the kids.  They will go up in the window of the Pharmacy for a couple weeks and then parents - or the kids - can pick them up.  No charge.  Another photo of Gordy’s full face is below.

Lauren of Four Starrs Boutique lets a little one choose a candy at the front door of the shop.  Each year more goblins show up and each year the merchants prepare with more candy.  Even so, several shops had ‘no candy left’ signs up shortly before the ending time of 6 pm.  Next year, even more candy.

Gordy - with his several cameras and lots of rolls of film.  He starts about 2:30 pm and continues past 8 pm.  Whew.  We thank the Fairhaven Pharmacy and their staff for shepherding the continuous line of goblins for so many hours.

Buskers singing reflected in tree colors

Saturday, October 27, 2007

I mean, these two guys were really going at it at 11th and Harris this afternoon.  Good funk, really.  Ian on the left and Issac on the right.  And their music fit perfectly with the wild tree colors.  Maybe is was just me - as I was walking down the hill towards them with that tree flaming above them.  Anyway, we are looking to a beautiful sunny weekend in Fairhaven and it is perfect for a getaway if you are reading this from Seattle or Vancouver or some other heavily populated place you would like to escape from for a day or two.

Nostalgia opens in new Young Building

Saturday, October 20, 2007

Lynn Loewen opened her retro women’s clothing shop today in the Young Building at the corner of 11th and McKenzie.  Her’s is the first business - indeed the first occupant - of the new Waldron and Young complex.  Her shop features clothing from the 1920s to the 1970s and is open every day of the week.  We will let you know here as other businesses open in this new building.

Woods Coffee a short walk from Fairhaven

Thursday, October 18, 2007

We could even claim that this is almost in Fairhaven.  A quiet walk along the South Bay trail, over the Taylor Avenue Dock and we are at this beautiful new coffee shop.  Woods is a locally owned business with six locations around our Whatcom County.  As you can see, they have great outside seating when the weather allows and are right on the shore of Bellingham Bay. Inside are comfortable chairs and even a cozy fireplace.  We tip our hats to the Bellingham Parks Department for allowing Woods to renovate the old pottery studio and turn it into such a great community gathering place.

The Young and Waldron Buildings - almost ready.

Sunday, October 7, 2007

The Young Building on the corner of 11th and McKenzie was getting awnings installed over some windows on Friday.  It is a brand new building with historic motiffs.  This is the seventh very high quality building by Ebenal Development in our historic district in the last five years.  Behind and to the right in the photo is the Waldron building - included in the count of seven buildings - which has been completely renovated by Ebenal and is also almost ready to open.

This photo was taken on Friday, with the beautiful sunshine and blue skys.  We expect McKenzie Avenue to be reopened any day now and provide us with more valuable parking spaces.

For more information about unit availability, please contact Stephanie Johnson, Fairhaven Realty at 360-739-9625.  The units available range in price from $350,000 - $1,500,000.00.

The full Harvest Moon over Harris Avenue

Wednesday, September 26, 2007

Tonight is the full moon - and the one near the first day of Autumn is the Harvest Moon, so named because it would aid farmers to work after sunset getting in the harvest.  It also rises up straight east - and thus this view looking east up Harris Avenue just after sunset.  Hope you enjoy it.

First Health Walk starts a new focus in Fairhaven

Friday, September 21, 2007

Jan Templeton, a Natural Health Specialist, gives Vicki a Bio-feedback health stress analysis - one of many free demonstrations given this evening.  Thirteen natural health oriented businesses provided free demos, healthy snacks and drawings for this first event of its kind in Fairhaven.  Jan provided the idea and she and Marie Mattson organized this unique event.

Scott Paglia who practices Chinese Medicine, gives a pulse evaluation to Dan at the BodyMind Center.  Participating businesses were as diverse as Haggen Fairhaven Market where organic food samples were given out to Fairhaven Runners who gave gait analyses to Studio 910 where they demonstrated organic skin care products.  Fairhaven has become Whatcom County’s “Natural Health Hub”, with over 50 natural health practitioners. .

Return of September Salmon BBQ to Fairhaven

Saturday, September 15, 2007

Ahhh - salmon being grilled over coals.  A perfect sunny afternoon.  The Dagwoods playing great music.  The pergola filled with artists.  The September Salmon BBQ is back.  In the 70s and 80s it was held in a field - and today that field has been transformed into the Village Green.  We thank Anne and Cathy Lee for putting all this together.  Thats Kyle of Bornstein Seafoods on the left being assisted by Rick as they grill and serve the salmon.  We have more photos in in the Photo Gallery.

Fairhaven Runners 15K Run is Great Race

Saturday, September 15, 2007

Runners cross the finish line on 10th Street next to the Village Green this morning after running 9.3 miles.  The race uses a great course along the bay from Fairhaven to the Squalicum Marina in Bellingham and then back along the waterfront trails, the Taylor Avenue Dock and back to Fairhaven.  This was the third annual of this race and they had over 600 runners and walkers registered.  A thanks to Steve Roguski of Fairhaven Runners and staff and volunteers.  More photos coming.

We have more photos posted on a photo gallery page.

Results of the run and walk are posted at the Fairhaven Runners website.  You can also view photos of every runner and order a photo if you wish.  Plus check previous year’s run results.

Shucking corn for Salmon BBQ

Friday, September 14, 2007

Shuckin & jivin on the Village Green as the crew gets ready for the Salmon Barbeque on Saturday.  The serving starts at 1:30 pm and goes till 4:40 pm.  Way back in the late 70s and early 80s there was a salmon bbq in September and was the yearly party for Fairhaven.  Back then it was held in the field which is now the Green.  This is a bit of a return to that fun festival.  Yes, there will be live music.  Maybe we will again capture that light spirited fun of those days.  Come down and join us and help make it happen.

The Senate plays before last movie

Saturday, September 8, 2007

A modest audience on a beautiful clear but chilly September evening enjoyed the music of the Senate who litereally insisted on audience participation. (the audience was large by sunset and movie time) It was fun and the movie was one that got rained out in July and rescheduled for this late season date.  We all thank Doug Borneman and his crew, especially producer Joe Olmstead, sound technician Sam Top and volunteer coordinator Genny Cohn, for the fine summer of outdoor cinema on our Village Green.  The movies each summer are now an institution in Fairhaven and it is easy to forget that many individuals work very hard to make them happen.  We should not take them for granted. Thanks Doug and crew.

Kayak-Polo on the Fairhaven waterfront

Tuesday, September 4, 2007

Once a week, from April through September, from 5:30 pm till dark, sunshine or rain, they assemble down at the Fairhaven waterfront and play kayak-polo.  A combination of soccer, basketball and polo.  You can see the net on top of the rod buoy about the center of the photo.  The 10 kayaks form two teams - and there is another buoy basket off the photo to the right about 100 feet.  The action was swift, smooth and sort of like watching soccer.  They pass a ball - someone in the photo has it - and paddles are up to block or guide the throw.  Or so it looked to the photographer.  Another fun activity in Fairhaven.  As the light faded, the photographer left and they were still playing.

Kayaking from Fairhaven is great fun

Wednesday, August 29, 2007

Back from a kayak excursion towards Chuckanut Bay, about 3 miles by water along the shore from Fairhaven, these three members of the Boating Center are shown just returned.  From left, Danielle, Chris and Stephanie took advantage of the easy access to boats and enjoyed the cool of the water while our temperature hit over 80 degrees today.  They got into some nice choppy water from the sea breeze and turned back short of Chuckanut Bay, but enjoyed the time.

We invite all who live here to check out the new Bellingham Bay Community Boating Center down on the Fairhaven waterfront.  You can join and have access to kayaks, rowboats or sailboats.  We can expect a couple more months of good boating weather.  Tis almost as good as owning your own boat.

New and old Fairhaven architecture is striking

Friday, August 24, 2007

The late afternoon sun has brought out the complex patterns in this new building on Mill Street - the Fairhaven Gardens.  Completed last year by Ebenal, the building has condos on upper floors and retail on the ground floors - a normal arrangement.  But the striking detail and the patterns are something Ebenal has enjoyed giving to all their Fairhaven buildings - now totalling seven.  In the bottom right is the A.W. Asian Bistro - on the ground floor at Finnegan Way - our very treasured and only Asian restaurant.  If you are wondering where to drive to this weekend, consider Historic Fairhaven.  It is a great place to just walk around and then enjoy any of the 20 restaurants.

Farmer’s Market continues to be popular

Wednesday, August 22, 2007

Each Wednesday afternoon, the market becomes even more popular.  More vendors and more visitors and more people purchasing vegatables, fruit, quick meals, art and more.  It has really grown this summer and will continue through the last Wednesday in September.  Live music from the stage helps set the mood.  It all starts at 3 pm and goes till 7 pm.  If you have not experienced it, come on down.  Browse the shops on the streets around the Green while here.  These are the golden days of summer and Historic Fairhaven is at its most beautiful.

Bocce Tournament fun for all participants

Saturday, August 18, 2007

The above scene shows the fun atmosphere that existed from 9 am to 2 pm on the Village Green today.  The 4th annual Bowler Hat Bocce Ball Tournament was a fine success - even though the organizers were worried about it being flat right up to the day before.  When you get lemons - make lemonade.  Organizer Jim Doran had only 13 teams because the August vacation time made it difficult for sponsors to get 4 players for the day long event.  So, Jim switched the competition from single elimination to double elimination and - and we had a full day of very close and enjoyable competition.  Teams got to play at least two games and many played 3, 4 or more games.

The day started out cool - in the 60s - and slowly warmed up with the sun out about noon.  You can see some of these players still wearing their fleece vests.  The bumpy ground of the Green creates an equalizer betewen experts and beginners and makes the competition closer.

The throw - so simple that first time players have no trouble.  But then the idea is to have your balls closed to the small white palino ball after each team has thrown their 4 big colored balls.  Green against red.  And the competition is so much fun.

The champion team.  They called themselves ‘Explosive & Corrosive’.  From the left, Aaron, Ryan, Collin and P. Huck with tournament organizer Jim Doran holding the permanent trophy.  Yes, each winning player received a bronze miniature of the hat on the Dirty Dan statue.  As they say, a fun time was had by all.  Congrats to the winners and thanks to all who participated.
