Wednesday, June 15, 2011

The weather forecast is great - maybe 70 degrees and mostly sunny - for this Friday evening.  Yes, chance of a shower but only briefly if at all.  Above is a list of the participating shops and restaurants - and it looks like one of our best Walk A’bouts ever.  You can also download the poster as a pdf file for easy printing.

For almost 20 years, the Historic Fairhaven District has celebrated the longest Friday evening of the year with the Solstice event.  Artists will be in shops with their work and refreshments will be available most places. All shops will be fully stocked and ready for serious shoppers.  It is a fun evening in Fairhaven. We invite you down.

Dedication of “Chinese Deadline” Plaque

Wednesday, June 8, 2011

Professor Ning Yu speaks about the Chinese inscriptions he wrote on the new granite plaque at the dedication ceremony this afternoon in Fairhaven.  The Old Fairhaven Association replaced a historical plaque that remembered the “Chinese Deadline” of a hundred years ago - a city law that forbid Chinese from going up Harris Avenue beyond 8th Street.  Hundreds worked in the salmon canning plants by the waterfront and were not allowed to go into the commercial district of Fairhaven.  Today, Mayor Dan Pike - seen by the light pole - offered an apology to the Chinese Community.

This photo shows the plaque and its location next to the sidewalk where it crosses Padden Creek at 8th Street.  The original plaque was installed by Tyron Tillson, a Fairhaven historian, back about 1990.  It was mysteriously removed about two years ago.  Over the past months, the Old Fairhaven Association has worked with the Northwest Chinese Cultural Association to replace the plaque.  Xinrong Lynch, president of the Chinese Association, spoke and emphasized that we should know the past but we should focus on the future with all groups tolerating and accepting each other.  This was echoed by other speakers.

The original plaque wording is shown - and below is the added wording about the the mayor’s apology.  Along the sides is the Chinese written by Ning Yu which is a saying from Confucius and roughly translated says; Study the past if you would know the future.  Over 70 people attended the ceremony and it was a festive event.  The sun came out as the ceremony was to begin - a fine portent for the future.
Our thanks to Tip Johnson for the photos.

Great Weather - Live Music - Fairhaven Festival

Monday, May 30, 2011

Space Band cranks up the crowd Sunday afternoon at the Fairhaven Festival.  Dancing in the streets as the Historic District puts on the best street fair of the year in Bellingham.  Over 30,000 people enjoyed food from over 30 vendors and shopping the fun stuff of over 60 street vendors.  Plus several Fairhaven shops - like Brenthaven and Good Earth Pottery - had great sidewalk sales with super savings prices.

The Beer Garden can just be seen stretching in the distance with the tent tops and the just the heads of the couple thousand folks enjoying an the ambience of music and meeting friends after the Ski to Sea race.  We tip our hat to Anna Williams and Stephanie Johnson and their volunteer committee members for the months of hard work preparing this annual event.

Just some of the food booths and diners on 11th Street with the old buildings from the 1800s.

The Squalicum High School Jazz Band led by Kay Riley playing to the large crowd on the Village Green.

Park & Ride Shuttle works great for Festival

Wednesday, May 25, 2011

Coming to the 8th Leg of the Ski to Sea Race on Sunday? The best street party of the year in Bellingham?  The Fairhaven Festival?  Avoid the hassle trying to park your car near Fairhaven.  For the 8th year, you can park free at Western Washington University and take the shuttle right to the edge of the festival in Fairhaven - to 12th Street in front of the Big Fat Fish Co. restaurant.  The bus ticket is $2.

It is a 4 minute bus ride to Fairhaven.  Use the “C” parking lot on Bill McDonald Parkway near the Recreation Center.  Just follow the signs to the parking lot.  Buses start running at 11 am and the last bus leaves Fairhaven at 8 pm.

NEW this year.  A second shuttle runs to downtown Bellingham and to Zuanich Point where the kayaks depart from.  It also stops in front of the Big Fat Fish restaurant in Fairhaven.  And that one ticket is good on that bus also.  This is in cooperation with the Ski to Sea race organizers.  Shuttles that work.  And allow you to enjoy the fun.  One ticket is good for all buses.

Tickets are on sale now at Village Books - and will be on sale at the bus stops at Western, Fairhaven and Boundary Bay on Sunday.  You can also download a copy of the map and this information on an easy to print PDF file.    See you at the Festival on Sunday.

Girl’s Night Out by Mark Turner

Wednesday, May 18, 2011

Mark Turner is our premier photographer in Fairhaven and he focused on the fun of Girl’s Night Out last Thursday evening.  And then he stitched his still photos into a medley with music.  Enjoy.

Girl’s Night Out Fun

Thursday, May 12, 2011

Whimsey - jewelry, arts and gifts - on 10th Street was also celebrating their 8th anniversary and owner Cami used the double event to the max.  And the ladies loved it.

Cathy Lee, owner of Southside Trends, sells Passports in the warm sunshine this afternoon.  Cathy and Pamela Felke, manager of Big Fat Fish Co., did the organizing for this year’s event.  The event is a fund raiser for the Cancer Research Center at St. Joseph’s hospital.

Three of the “Girls” get their passports stamped at Skylark’s Cafe. Pink was the color of the evening all through the historic district.  By taking passports to participating businesses, the ladies encountered specials, fun shopping, delicious treats, and discovery of new shops and restaurants.  Filled passports qualified them for the drawings at the end of the evening.

Papa and his dad, Richard, provide some fine music and songs in front of Papa’s Sweets - his new coffee, chocolates and ice cream shop on Harris.

Jade, owner of Jiva Yogi Wellness, had a table in Finnegan’s Alley.  Some businesses not in the historic core set up tables in various places and participated.

Russ, owner of Silvery Moon, shows some fine jewelry to a fine lady with a very fine pink hat.  All through the historic district, shop owners and ladies enjoyed meeting.  It was a special evening in Fairhaven.  And the end will be more funding for cancer research.

Girl’s Night Out This Evening - Thursday

Monday, May 9, 2011

UPDATE:  Weather continues to improve all afternoon for GNO

From 4 to 10 pm TODAY this Thursday, the event will benefit the Cancer Research Center at St. Joseph Hospital.  And the ladies will have a lot of fun raising money for the cause.  Raffles, door prizes, entertainment, all female comedy review - even a bra parade.  And it ends with a fashion show at 9 pm.  All it takes is to dress up, show up, buy your $10 passport, and join the fun.

Who Let the Girls Out? Well, after the fun event last year, that is pretty much the theme for this year.  And, yes, we are told the celebrity fireman will be back.  The above photo was taken at last year’s event.

Skylark’s wins Chuckanut Chowder Cookoff - Again

Sunday, May 1, 2011

Don White and his staff serve up another bowl of his great clam chowder.  Obviously great chowder as he again won the “People’s Choice” award at the Dirty Dan Days annual Chuckanut Chowder Cookoff.  His Skylark’s restaurant won the award the last two years.  According to Don, his chowder is the same one he serves daily in his restaurant.  Second place was Dirty Dan Harris Steakhouse and third was Chuckanut Brewery from downtown Bellingham.

The “Judge’s Choice” award went to the Colophon Cafe in a unanimous decision for a tantalizing chowder that included bits of coconut - which is surprising because two of the judges don’t like coconut.  That is a chowder to try.  Second in the Judges category was the Fountain Bistro and third was again Chuckanut Brewery - both from the heart of Bellingham.

The Northwest Ballet gave a 20 minute presentation from the upcoming “Emerald Bay” ballet about the relations between the Chinese and white settlers in 1800s Fairhaven.  The ballet will be performed at the Mt. Baker Theater on June 10,11 and 12.  See the ad in the right side column for a link to their website and to purchase tickets.  The Old Fairhaven Association is a sponsor and supporter of this ballet which uses the early history of Fairhaven to create a drama in the style of Romeo and Juliet. Above is shown the beautiful dancing by Chinese dancers from the ballet.

The ninth Dirty Dan Days concluded with a day of warm sunshine - the warmest day since last September.  The historic district was jumping with folks enjoying the incredible weather.  We thank Stephanie Johnson and Doug Borneman for staging this super two day event for at least the fifth year now.

Haggen Fairhaven Market wins Piano Race

Saturday, April 30, 2011

Their faces as they approach the yellow finish line tape tells it all.  The guys from Haggen Fairhaven Market ran a stellar race and it gave them their first victory after several years of hard persistent efforts with no win.  The race involves teams of four starting at 10th and Harris, running downhill - down Harris - to their pianos waiting for them at 8th Street and then pulling and pushing their pianos back up to 10th.  It takes less time than the Kentucky Derby but the crowd of over a thousand lining Harris Avenue is just as excited and noisy as any at Churchill Downs.

Taking second was Fairhaven Runners - seen just behind the winners - who were the winners the past two years.

Dirty Dan Days continues Sunday, with the 1800s Dress Contest at 12:45, the Chuckanut Chowder Cookoff from 2 to 4 pm, and the Dirty Dan Look-a-Like contest at 3 pm.  The weather is perfect for our annual celebration of the founding of Fairhaven in 1883 by Dirty Dan Harris.  We invite you to join us in Historic Fairhaven.

Dirty Dan Days

Saturday, April 30, 2011

The Trout Toss competition. You’ve no doubt watched the salmon tossing at the Pike Place Market - and maybe seen the Salmon Toss competition at Dirty Dan Days.  Well, this year trout toss was added for the younger ones as trout are much smaller than salmon.  As you can see - click the photo for a larger view - the trout are pretty good sized and still a hefty throw for the really young ones.  Yep, the salmon toss was also held today - but the trout toss drew the bigger audience.  Doesn’t matter who won as all gave it their best - but will say that it came down to two teams who both kept catching as they were moved back a couple feet for each next toss.

Knute made his Paella again this year - and he even brought a second pan so he could keep it going continuously.  Really a great taste treat.  We’ll give Knute a free plug here - as you can contract with him to come to your party and cook up this for you.  Check http://www.paellaworks.com for full information.

Dirty Dan Days concludes today with the piano race at 3:45 pm.  Check back here for a photo.

Sunny & Warm predicted for Dirty Dan Days

Thursday, April 28, 2011

This Saturday and Sunday, from 10 am to 4 pm each day, is the most fun festival of the year in Fairhaven - Dirty Dan Days.  Doug Borneman, shown above helping hand out bowls and bread during the Chuckanut Chowder Cook-Off last year, is the maestro who has developed this into a super event of the Pacific Northwest.  This is Doug’s last year managing and it promises to be as much fun as last year.

A short ballet presentation from “Emerald Bay”, a ballet about Fairhaven’s 1800s history with the Chinese - will be staged each day by the Northwest Ballet on the stage at the Village Green.  Also on Saturday is live music all day, Salmon tossing contest - and trout tossing for the little ones, cupcake eating contests, lots of fun booths on the Village Green, and the Piano Race at 3:45 pm.

The Chuckanut Chowder Cook-Off is the big atrraction on Sunday.  This year there are 12 restaurants competing for the Peoples and Judges prizes.  Can anyone beat repeat winner Skylark’s?  Also on Sunday is the Dirty Dan look-a-like contest and an 1800s dress contest. In the morning off Boulevard Park is the start of the Dan Harris Challenge rowing race to Chuckanut Bay.

The full schedule of both days is posted.  Plus all the shops and restaurants in Fairhaven will be open for you to walk about and discover.

(hey to any restaurant owners:  There is room for a couple more chowder cook-off contestants.  Great publicity for your business.  Contact Doug at (360) 733-2682.)

Salmon released by Larrabee School students

Wednesday, April 20, 2011

Padden Creek receives another little - under 2 inches - Coho salmon fry as it goes sliding down the plastic half tube.  On Tuesday, about 100 students from Larrabee grade school hiked over to Padden Creek in Fairhaven and released 120 of the little fry that they had raised from eggs since January.  The salmon will stay in the stream a year, then head out to the ocean for two years and return in November 2014 to hopefully spawn.  The release took place Tuesday and is a modest but valuable step to get our wild salmon cycle viable again.

Wendy Scherrer, in the red coat, is the spark behind this project.  No surprise there.  Teachers Jenny Pittis and Lisa Conlin, along with fisher Bret Simmons, guided the students in raising the salmon.  Even the water in their aquarium was taken from Padden Creek so the salmon will imprint on it for returning from the sea.  The whole project is called “Salmon in the classroom” and informally called “Salmon in your backyard” because of Padden Creek literally flowing behind many residences on Bellingham’s south side.  All part of the fun of living in Fairhaven.

Padden Creek flows past the historic district and into Bellingham Bay down at 8th and Harris.  There is a walking trail along most of the creek.

Drawing winners go sailing on Spike Africa

Saturday, April 16, 2011

click photo for larger view
A wave to the camera as the schooner Spike Africa leaves the dock before the sails are raised for a spanking two hour cruise on Bellingham Bay.  A dozen Fairhaven businesses sponsored twenty some winners of a drawing to this cruise.  Spike Africa is a 62 foot schooner that sails out of Friday Harbor for multi day cruises of the islands and was here in Fairhaven for the Bellingham Bay Rendezvous held today at the Bellingham Cruise Terminal.

Fairhaven business sponsors for the 24 tickets were:  Jacaranda Development (Ken and Brad Imus); Rebecca’s Flower Shoppe; Artwood Gallery; 12th Street Shoes; Village Books and Paper Dreams; Fairhaven Village Inn; Bellingham Tennis Club and Fairhaven Fitness; Renaissance Celebration; Good Earth Pottery; The Silvery Moon; Southside Trends; Fairhaven.com and Paws Awhile.

The highlight of the day was unveiling the new homeport name “Bellingham WA” on the stern of the schooner Zodiac.  Above, Port Commission President, Mike McAuley speaks to the crowd.  To his right is Karl Mehrer, the senior Captain of the Zodiac and Gordie Tweit, our much loved retired Fairhaven Pharmacist.  Gordie pulled the cord that unveiled the new name.

The new wording on the stern of the 127 foot schooner Zodiac now calls Bellingham her homeport.  Many of the folks going out on this sail were sponsored by the Whidbey Island Bank, which has a branch office in Fairhaven.  It was a great day on the Fairhaven waterfront and we thank the Port of Bellingham for hosting this fabulous day of big cruising boats - both power and sail.

Drawing for 24 lucky Schooner cruise tickets

Friday, April 15, 2011

Dee Robinson drew the winning entries from a classic old bowler hat, while Chuck Robinson firmly held the hat.  12 winners got two tickets each for a sail on the 62 foot schooner Spike Africa on Saturday noon.  (photo of Spike just below)  It is all part of the Bellingham Bay Rendezvous this weekend at the Bellingham Cruise Terminal - but we all know it as the Alaska Ferry Terminal.

From 9 am to 4 pm on Saturday there will be big beautiful boats to tour.  Craft vendors, marine paintings, toy boat building for the little ones - a fun day on the Fairhaven waterfront. Click the link on the left to see all the details.  And we’ll see you down there.

The 24 free cruises were sponsored by 13 Fairhaven businesses, with Ken and Brad Imus and their Jacaranda Development donating half.  Fairhaven business owners hope to see more schooners and charter vessels visiting our safe Fair Haven harbor this summer.  We welcome all the beautiful boats that will be visiting tomorrow.

Papa’s Sweets opens on Harris Avenue

Sunday, April 3, 2011

Papa, aka David Starr, has finished renovating the candy shop space next to Three French Hens and opened his very unique shop.  He combines incredible chocolates with coffees and other unique candies.  This week he will be adding ice cream cones, shakes and who knows what other fun, impulse and satisfying treats to tempt us in his shop door.  Where exactly is he?  How about right across the street from Tony’s Coffee.  Now you know.

We invite you to slip in the door and check out his shop.  This is the sort of place we love in Fairhaven and I think it will evolve as Papa learns what we and visitors to Fairhaven want for quick treats.

New Fairhaven TV ad debuts this week

Saturday, April 2, 2011

Fairhaven advertising is assuming spring is here and our spring getaway TV ad will start playing to Seattle and Vancouver residents this week.  We have expanded it to include scenes of mountain biking and kayaking - two outdoor sports that we have some of the finest in the state and maybe in the US.

click the photo to see the video.

The ad highlights how easy it is to get to Fairhaven with Amtrak stopping literally in Fairhaven and trains from Seattle only $21 one way.  It shows scenes of the Chrysalis Hotel, Book Fare restaurant, mountain biking on Cleater Road, kayaking in Pleasant Cove, the Village Green and a picnic at Marine Park.  Plus walking the historic streets - all in 30 seconds.  Max Kaiser and his crew at Hand Crank Films right here in Bellingham produced the ad.  Enjoy.

You can watch and listen to this and earlier ads for Fairhaven by scrolling down the left column and clicking on the graphic ad with old Dan Harris tipping his hat.

Joe’s Gardens is open for the season

Wednesday, March 23, 2011

click photo for larger view

Actually, they opened two weeks ago.  The long winter is over.  Today the staff - including Carl and Karol - were busy planting seeds, caring for tiny seedlings and generally filling several greenhouses with new plants.  They are open every day except Sunday and have vegetable and flower plants by the thousands.  Yes, Carl and Karol are retired - except in the spring when all expeerienced hands are needed.

Above, Forest hangs new baskets with freshly planted flowers where they will wait for buyers. And spread all along the floor of the greenhouse are starters for local gardeners.

They are open 8 am to 6 pm, Monday thru Friday and 8 am to 5:30 pm on Saturday.  We invite you to stop by and get some new plants for your own garden or flower bed.  And believe that spring is finally here.

Grand opening on Monday at Book Fare Cafe

Saturday, March 19, 2011

A really fine cozy restaurant on the mezzanine level of Village Books, Book Fare has recently been bought by Charles Claassen.  And Monday, March 21, he invites us all to - well here are his words:  “Come enjoy free food, live musical entertainment, and new products and menu items throughout the day.”

The Book Fare Cafe has no street presence.  But it does have one of the nicest views from the tables of any eatery in Fairhaven - looking over the Village Green and allowing the afternoon sun to stream in the windows.  And it is open for lunch and dinner every day of the week.  Book Fare Cafe’s menu is based on seasonal and regionally appropriate ingredients. The cafe features light fare such as panini sandwiches, soups, salads, artisanal scratch-baked goods, gluten-free treats, wine, beer, coffee, tea, and a full line of espresso drinks.

Afternoons it is very popular for meeting friends over a coffee, tea or glass of wine.  Above, Ruth enjoys a book and refreshment on a mid afternoon.

Charles was the chef at the North Cascades Institutes learning center on Lake Diablo.  He has over twenty years of chef experience and brings a fresh menu and ideas to his new restaurant.

Book Fare is open 10am-7:30pm Monday through Saturday, and 11am-6pm on Sundays.

Schooner Zodiac featured on magazine cover

Thursday, March 3, 2011

The 160 foot long schooner Zodiac has moved to Fairhaven on a permanent year round basis. Fairhaven stands to benefit hugely from this move with more visitors coming here to enjoy all the outdoor recreation we have to offer.

And so we are planning a celebration.  The stern - the back end - of the Zodiac shows the city she calls home. On Saturday, April 16, that name will change to Bellingham - from Seattle. Shortly after noon, we will have a dedication ceremony, complete with speeches and live music, to unveil the new name on the stern of the Zodiac. From 9 am to 4 pm, we will have a fun day of boating activities at the Bellingham Cruise Terminal in Fairhaven. We invite everyone. We will have full information right here on Fairhaven.com under the events tab.

The event is being hosted by the Port of Bellingham and the prime sponsor making this all possible is Whidbey Island Bank, with the Fairhaven Branch manager Dave Hannah as the lead organizer of this event.  Plan to attend.

And pick up a copy of Adventures NW magazine, which is published right here in Fairhaven by Paul Haskins and Alaine Borgias. The new issue sports a Zodiac cover (shown here) and a story about sailing aboard the schooner. The spring issue has just been distributed to display racks all over Whatcom County, nearby counties, and and the entire region. Be sure to pick it up, as it has some great articles and photos of outdoor fun near Fairhaven and in other parts of the Pacific Northwest.

Jaimie Berg is moving on - closing Fun to Shop

Monday, February 28, 2011

Jaimie Berg, our hula hooping phenom - is hitting the road to try her luck with her hoops.  How?  Well, she hopes by teaching and demonstrations.  She will travel with her mother Bria, shown above.  Last night they had champagne toasts with friends as they closed down her business in Sycamore Square.  Her charming business, Fun to Shop, has sold retro women’s clothing and accessories for 13 years.  They will have a final sale today, Monday.

Jaimie is spectacular with the hula hoop and has often entertained those visiting Fairhaven with free shows on the sidewalks.  See the photo below from 2009 on Halloween.  We will miss her as she has helped give Fairhaven the fun and eclectic ambience that we treasure. We wish her the best as she follows her dreams.

Movie and a Pizza

Saturday, February 19, 2011

Netflix can’t do that for you. You can phone in your pizza order to Fairhaven Pizza and pick it up after selecting a movie at Trek Video.  We all know there is always parking right in front or next to these two well liked Fairhaven businesses.  Your pizza can be ‘Take Out’ or it can be ‘Take and Bake’.  And Trek has the largest Foreign Film selection in Bellingham.  Plus all the latest releases.

Above Rob of Trek and Dan of Fairhaven Pizza give us a wave.  I had 10 seconds to shoot this photo as they had customers and that car wanted that parking spot.  But this combination of pizza next door to video rental has long seemed to me such a convenient way for us to create a fine evening at home when the urge hits us.  Both businesses provide excellent and quick service.

Links below to their businesses.  They are in the little shopping mall between Harris and Mill Avenues at 13th Street. But you knew that.  - John Servais

Trek Video - open to 11 pm Fri & Sat and to 10 pm all other nights.
Fairhaven Pizza - 756-7561 - open to 9 pm every night except closed Mon.

Garage Sale at Village Books

Friday, February 18, 2011

Today - Saturday - from 11 am to 4 pm.

The second day of this sale. Still available are book shelves, display fixtures, books and much more.

As co-owner Chuck Robinson put it:
“We’ve cleaned out some storage areas and are clearing out some overstock and having a giant garage sale this weekend (Friday & Saturday, 11am ~ 4pm) in the garage below the bookstore - enter from Mill Ave.  There are hundreds of books at 99 cents, $1.99 & $2.99; bins of items from Paper Dreams for as little as 50 cents; and a large number of display fixtures and bookshelves.  There are some good bargains and great reads.  Come by and take a look.”

We don’t normally post news of garage sales, but Village Books has been a great supporter of Fairhaven.com since we began.  As the sun comes up this morning, it actually promises to be a very sunny day.  Remember - the sale is through the door on Mill Avenue - the side of the store.

Raining Queen Diane oversees Rain Fest

Saturday, February 12, 2011

Queen Diane presided over a very blustery Official Pacific Northwest Rain Festival today.  With wind gusts of over 40 mph, the festival went on.  Some even thought they felt a drop or two of rain.  Above, the Raining Queen Diane pets the pug to see if it is wet or dry.  She pronounced it dry to the cheers of all present.  Dirty Dan Harris, aka Jim Rich, told us that meant only 8 more weeks of rain before spring.  All cheered again, for no particular reason.  Thats Dirty Dan at the microphone.  Others are Jody, on the left, and Taimi holding the pug ( it is her pet, after all) from the Ladies of the Evening Society - a very upright association of Historic Fairhaven.  The smiling top hatted fellow is Rich Bulman, a local artist of fine repute.  Click the photo for a larger view.

Lauren reads her poem for the annual Rain Poetry contest.  She won.  Actually, both she and the other contestant won first prize.  The judges decided what the heck, both poems were very good, were original and were about rain.  Fairhaven merchants donate the prizes and they are placed on a table.  Winners of the various contests simply look them over and choose something they can use.  It works. Another contest was a children’s rain gear modeling - but they were too shy for a decent photo.  They still got prizes.

This was the 9th annual Rain Fest, first started when the Village Green was almost finished in 2003.  It is a fun but short - would you believe half hour - event that helps break the monotony of the gray rainy days of our Pacific Northwest winter.  After the Fest, all in attendance scatter to the fine coffee houses and wine bars of Fairhaven.  The Ladies of the Evening Society have participated each year and have decided to join Diane and help organize it next year.  It should be fun and we look forward to it.

Schooner Zodiac New Masts Arrive in Fairhaven

Thursday, February 3, 2011

The Schooner Zodiac, based down at the Bellingham Cruise Terminal on the Fairhaven waterfront, took delivery of two new masts today.  Big masts.  The main mast is 114 feet long and the foremast is 93.  We see them arriving by truck from Aberdeen where they were made on a huge lathe.  The main mast is from a single Douglas Fir tree specially selected near Medford, Oregon.

The masts will be “stepped” on the Zodiac in March and she will be ready for her charter season in April.  The Zodiac recently moved to Fairhaven from Seattle.  She is one of the oldest and longest schooners in the United States.  Yes, we are delighted and proud she has chosen Fairhaven to sail out from.  We are planning a special event with the Zodiac for this spring - so, check here about mid February for news.  And check their website - and plan a great summer vacation for yourself and your close ones.

Metal Artist is hosted at FOG on Friday evening

Friday, January 14, 2011

click photo for larger view

This show will remain on display until mid February.

Fairhaven Originals Gallery is hosting Larry McCaffrey from 5 to 8 pm this Friday evening.  Located on Harris Avenue in Historic Fairhaven, FOG is our newest gallery.  Curator Caitlin McInnis has assembled a show of Larry’s metal sculptures and the he will be present this evening.  McCaffrey resides in Sequim and his work is well known in the Northwest.  The public is invited.

Work by several other artists is also on display, including Gary Ford, David Milton and Sandy Keller.  The fog, as we know it in Fairhaven, is a beautiful gallery space in the Harris Square just off the corner of 10th and Harris.

Historic street lights get new globes

Sunday, January 9, 2011

With the 1890 era Pythias Building as a background, Dwaine of Bellingham Public Works installs new white globes on one of our historic styled lamp posts.  In all, 27 of the double light posts had their globes replaced.  The old globes, some even more crudded that the one shown, had reduced light output and did not light the streets sufficiently.  Safety is still important even in an historic district.  The first lights in Fairhaven in the 1890s were probably gas fired.  But these posts go very well with our historic district, even though they are more of a 1920s theme.

We thank the Public Works Department, and especially Clark Williams, for working with the Old Fairhaven Association to find the right globes and upgrade the lights for the safety of all.

Village Books now selling eBooks online

Saturday, January 1, 2011

Village Books has teamed up with Google eBooks, enabling us to now order eBooks directly from the Village Books website.  What is nice is the prices are the same low prices offered by Google or any other online vendor - and a portion of the profit goes to Village Books.  We can order low cost online and support our locally owned bookstore.  To check it out and order a book, just click on the Village Books ad in the right side of this webpage.

But, you know, we also enjoy browsing the books at the the store - live and with the good chance of meetings friends.  The above photo was taken today.  Village Books remains one of the most fun stores to shop in all of Whatcom County.  It is cozy and comfortable.  The book selection is great - with all the books by local authors and about local places, history and recreation.

Now with eBooks available as easily from Village Books as from anyone online, we can have the best of both.

Village Books for the Best last minute gifts

Wednesday, December 22, 2010

Open till 6 pm on Christmas Eve, Village Books makes last minute shopping easy with 3 floors of books.  And free gift wrapping at Paper Dreams for any books you buy.  They are open till 8:30 pm on Thursday night, Dec 23.

For selection, the entire top floor is filled with fiction and poetry books.  The middle floor is childrens, non-fiction, history and all those categories.  The bottom Village Green level is cooking, business, crafts, travel, home renovation and sports.

But the best is their selection of local books - by Bellingham authors and about Bellingham and Whatcom County.  Every category is covered by local books and their dedication to local authors goes back over three decades.  You will find the gift book that will be appreciated by your remaining special friends and family.  And they will think you considered carefully and thought of them early.  We invite you to Fairhaven for your last minute shopping.

Fairhaven Runners for Gifts

Sunday, December 19, 2010

Some friends or relatives on your list go hiking - or exercise walking - and maybe running or jogging.  At Fairhaven Runners there is a wide selection of clothing and accessories for hikers and walkers as well as runners.  The staff at this locally owned specialty shop are able to select what they sell - and this makes for some quality items not found at chain stores.  While they exist to sell shoes, they carry jackets, sox, gloves, maps, and much more.

Fairhaven Runners is one of over 30 specialty shops in Fairhaven that provide you with outstanding gift selections.  With every shop locally owned and managed, you will find many gifts not found elsewhere - allowing you to give gifts that are a surprise as well as unique. Many shops carry Northwest hand crafted items - wood, jewelry, art, glass art, pottery, toys, and more.  We invite you to Historic Fairhaven for your Holiday and Christmas shopping.

Historic Fairhaven in Full Holiday Spirits

Thursday, December 16, 2010

This Saturday, Dec 18, the horse and carriage rides will again be clip clopping through the historic district from 1 to 4 pm, leaving from the Village Inn on 10th Street.  Free.  Kids love these rides.

Santa is also in the Village Inn, sitting on his huge chair and letting the little ones sit on his knee to better convey their wishes for Christmas.  Also 1 to 4 pm.  And, of course, free.

The Grinch is at the Waldron Building on McKenzie and kids or the whole family can have their picture taken with him for $10.  Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 10 am to 6 pm.

The Village Green is decorated with many Christmas trees and lights.  The little ones can go explore between this forest of trees.  We thank Cami of Whimsey Jewelry on 10th Street for making this fun forest happen again this year.

And - all the shops and restaurants have their windows decorated.  With the historic buildings, this makes for a genuine holiday atmosphere.  We invite you to do your Christmas and Holiday shopping in Historic Fairhaven - where every shop and restaurant is locally owed and operated.

Silvery Moon for Eclectic Jewelry

Tuesday, December 7, 2010

Searching for a unique, hand crafted, one-of-a-kind piece of jewelry for that special person?  Then you want to browse The Silvery Moon on Harris Avenue - right on the cobblestone walkway.  Gold and silver pieces are in traditional styles, with an emphasis on rare stone insets.  Plus you will find a large selection of Northwest styled rings, bracelets and necklaces.  And you will find pieces in every price range.

Owner Russ Milenbach has a lifetime of experience - his father was a jeweler - and he knows all the best jewelry artists in the Northwest.  Russ owns his shop and you will meet him when you enter.  He knows the story behind each piece in his display cases.

We invite you to Fairhaven for your Christmas and Holiday shopping.  You will find every shop locally owned and managed.  Really - literally - every shop and restaurant is locally owned.  This provides you with gift selections that are unique, often hand crafted in our local Northwest, and of high value for your dollar.

Tim Imus, Fairhaven building owner, has died

Friday, December 3, 2010

It is sad to report that Tim Imus, son of Ken and Barbara Imus, died last night.  Tim owned buildings on Harris and McKenzie in Fairhaven and has managed them for many years.  He was very well liked by the business owners in Fairhaven who knew him.  He served on the Old Fairhaven Association Board of Directors for several years.  Tim was 56 years old.  He grew up in California and worked there for many years there before moving to Fairhaven in 2000.  Tim worked with his brother Brad and father Ken on the revitalization of Fairhaven.  He was easy to meet and enjoyable to be around.  I will miss him and he will be missed in Fairhaven.

In lieu of flowers, his family requests memorials be made to Hospice House, 800 E. Chestnut St. Suite 1A, Bellingham, WA 98225, website Whatcom Hospice.  A celebration of Tim’s life will be announced at a later date.  You may view photos of Tim and share memories with the family at http://www.westfordfuneralhome.com
