No Fear Of Heights!Tuesday, April 5, 2005
An enormous crane looms above construction of the new condos at 10th & Harris, overshadowing a tiny figure working on the top right side of the roof. New residents of the condo project eagerly await its completion this summer. April Showers Bring…Thursday, March 31, 2005
Kelly and Penny at A Lot of Flowers mix beautiful spring colors into a bouquet for a customer. The rain outside was on and off all day on this last day of March, as we head into a season of flowers blooming all around the Fairhaven district. Dan’s FanFriday, March 25, 2005
An unidentified friend of Dan Harris gets a little closer on the Fairhaven Village Green Friday afternoon. After a kiss to see if Dan was real, bystanders say the Dan did seem to smile a bit on this warm spring day. Hurrying Along At DuskTuesday, March 22, 2005
Early spring dusk on the streets of Historic Fairhaven. The days are warm enough that folks at Jacci’s Fish & Chips are eating at the outside tables. The evenings are crisp enough that we still need our coats. The buds on the trees are just starting. And the old buildings glow in the light of the sunset. Our visitor slogan - “Time stands still in Fairhaven” - almost seems true at some quiet moments. Village Green is Back in ActionSunday, March 13, 2005
Our Village Green is entering its third summer, providing us with a great public square for games, movies, festivals and just hanging out. Today was the first time I saw croquet being played. These folks were so into it they never noticed the photographer working to get better angles. I haven’t seen bocce ball yet this spring, but that is the regular game on the green. Incredible Wood Carving DemosSaturday, March 12, 2005
Flowers carved from wood. Carver Frank Hulse points to the hummingbird feeding at a flower - both carved from wood. You have to touch it to believe it. The flowers in the glass box are also all wood and you can see some of his bird carvings on top of the desk. The 15th Annual Carving Show at Artwood Gallery continues on Sunday from noon to 4 pm. Along with Frank are four other carvers showing and demonstrating how they create their art. They are Thu Nguyen, Andy Serafin, Mary Stapp and Rocky MacArthur. All are welcome. Dennis Bakke Launches BookSunday, March 6, 2005
“Joy at Work” author Dennis Bakke gave Village Books a special experience with the world launching of his new book this evening. Dennis grew up in Saxon, on the South Fork of the Nooksack River here in Whatcom County, moved to the East Coast, and helped start what is now one of the world’s largest companies, AES. His book presents his views on how to run a corporation. Many of his relatives and friends were in the audience. Dennis referred to his roots being here and to the lessons he learned as a youth here. Dennis could have launched in New York, but chose Fairhaven. Tomorrow he will be in New York to continue the book launch. His book has a website and, of course it is available at Village Books. We thank you, Dennis. New Parking Lot on Mill AvenueFriday, March 4, 2005
A new parking lot in the heart of historic Fairhaven is being built and should be ready for use next week. Yes, that is Village Books just across Mill Ave, and the Village Green - with the movie screen. The lot is expected to hold over 50 cars. It will greatly help the parking. The lot is being built by Ram Construction and Ebenal General, both of which are donating some of their services. Several Fairhaven property owners are paying for the balance. They are Ken, Brad and Tim Imus, Phyllis McKee, Gene and Connie Shannon, Dave Ebenal and Ted Mischaikov. Ken Imus is loaning the property for at least two years - and maybe longer. This is a private effort with no government money by these Fairhaven business owners. The money is out of their pockets, plus some from the parking fund. With the busy spring season almost here, we all appreciate the ‘can do’ attitude and real contribution by these few individuals. This will keep Fairhaven a place of free parking for all. Fresh Seafood at Fairhaven MarketThursday, February 24, 2005
The new seafood display cases at the Fairhaven Market are carefully stocked by Mike, their seafood specialist. The Market is back to managing its own seafood department - just like in the 80s - and the selection is first class. Mike has the cases set up each day by 11 am and maintains them till 7 pm. Love seafood? Check out our new seafood department in Fairhaven. Casual Discussion on Harris AveSaturday, February 19, 2005
Herb and Frank enjoyed the sunshine at the corner of Harris and 10th this afternoon. I was told the subject of discussion was the potential impacts and ameliorations of the progressing projects of considerable height in the neighborhood - to wit, kitty corner from them. Herb is well known to Fairhavenites, using his motorized wheelchair to advantage on our streets. Frank is new to the district but is quickly making friends. Fairhaven has been known for its interesting characters from earliest times and every decade to the present. The photographer well remembers Bobby Burns and Jerry Burns. Tall buildings need not deter our casual and irreverent spirits. Salons for Tsunami Relief a SuccessSunday, February 13, 2005
Many salons in Fairhaven participated in the tsunami relief effort today. Here, Aryon of Blessings Salon gives Robert a haircut - she working for the effort and he paying for the relief fund. The benefit effort continues till 6 pm today.
Looking down the Cobblestone Walk towards the Village Green on this Sunday. It is a beautiful spring-like day in Fairhaven and people are enjoying the historic district ambience. Balloons advertise the Elysium Salon, participating in the Tsunami relief effort. Fairhaven tends to be warmer than Bellingham anyway because of the protection from the north wind by South Hill. Sunshine Fails to Wreck Rain FestSaturday, February 5, 2005
The moment of truth - checking to see if the little pug - Taimi’s pet dog - has gotten wet from the rain. Nope. Dry fur. As the press photographed the moment, a cheer rose up from the crowd. A dry pug means only 7 more weeks of rain. Officials crowd around Taimi and her pug as the prognosis is read. More photos on official Rain Festival web page The 3rd annual Pacific Northwest Rain Festival had to use Plan B today - the cancellation program - because of the sunshine. Plan B is basically the same as the normal schedule with rain. Actually, we would welcome a bit of rain. The sunny day was hard on our eyes.—Photo by Tim Imus Mid-Winter Sunset Over Harris BayTuesday, February 1, 2005
The Alaska Ferry Matanuska is in final loading and an hour from sailing north for a non-stop 36-hour trip to Ketchikan, Alaska. It sails each Tuesday evening all winter. We often get beautiful cloud formations that sweep in from the west over the San Juan Islands, and today we got these at sunset. The hill on the far right on the horizon - above the bow of the ferry - is Mount Constitution on Orcas Island in the San Juans. Of course, the big hump on the horizon is Lummi Island. Our ever-changing view from Fairhaven. Fairhaven Pizza Company OpensWednesday, January 26, 2005
This guy makes great pizzas. Located right next door to Trek Video, Tom Traibush has just opened a full-service pizza parlor - the Fairhaven Pizza Company. You can pick it up or dine in or take & bake - however you like it. Huge choice of toppings - so however you like your pizza, you can get it here. Check it out. Flats Tapas Bar is openWednesday, January 19, 2005
Spanish cuisine and cozy atmosphere marks Fairhaven’s newest restaurant. Lilly and Greg give us a couple of smiles as they wait for some really fine-tasting tapas, or Spanish snacks. Open from 11 am to 10 pm daily, Flats Tapas Bar also serves full dinners and will start serving lunch in February. Located at 1307 11th Street, where d’Annas Deli was. Check it out. Great tasting eats. Warm Weather ReturnsSunday, January 16, 2005
The sidewalks of Fairhaven were bustling with people again today as the two-week cold snap finally left. About 1:30 pm today, the flag on the 110-foot pole in front of the library started to flutter from the beginning southern breeze and the temperature finally went into the 30s. We are into our normal winter weather - 40s and often rainy. Above is 11th Street with the new Village Books showing its windowed corner. Ahhh ‘tis nice to have the cold gone. Cold Weather StaysMonday, January 10, 2005
Brrrr! The Village Green is quite white as several folks stop to chat at the back door to Village Books this afternoon. The cold weather continues this week - and the prediction is for lowest temperatures on Thursday night. Cold for Fairhaven is daytime highs in the 30s and lows at night of 20. Not our normal 48 and 36 temps. Well, the shops and restaurants are warmer and more inviting on days like this. Sunset with Chuckanut MountainSaturday, January 8, 2005
View down Finnegan Way towards the historic district this evening. Chuckanut Mountain, with its snow-covered fir trees, provides a beautiful backdrop - and our snowy wonderland continues. Number 1 Bus To FairhavenSaturday, January 8, 2005
Take the #1 bus for a great ride to Fairhaven. These buses are the newest in the WTA fleet and provide a very comfortable ride (not like the old pseudo trolley buses that have been discarded). Yes, that is a scene of sailing on Bellingham Bay on the back. I’ve ridden on this bus and can tell you it is really comfortable. Plus - the seats in the back are up a few steps providing a great view from on high. The bus runs all day every day, except Sunday, from the main downtown terminal.
Merchants are out sweeping the sidewalks. Here, Karolyn of Gallery West attacks the huge amount of sidewalk in front of the fine art gallery. A corner location has benefits and it has additional - shall we say opportunities. Many shops are reopened this morning, including Pacific Chef, with their great selection of cooking tools; Fairhaven Runners, with people buying good boots for snow and cold weather; and of course, Village Books. Fairhaven Market is on regular hours, as always. A Cold and Snowy DayFriday, January 7, 2005
Winter wonderland? Not exactly. Most shops were closed. Village Books was open, but is closing at 6 pm. Some restaurants are providing great hospitality and warmth. This view is looking uphill on Harris Avenue from 10th Street. Cold? At 5 pm it is about 29 degrees with a cold north wind. ‘Tis a winter we get only once every few years.
We got about 4 inches of snow since yesterday’s photo below. This is the same view downhill on Harris Avenue, showing the 12th Street intersection. Yes, Harris is slippery. Fairhaven Pharmacy stayed open all day, as they do no matter the weather. A Cold and Rainy DayThursday, January 6, 2005
A good day to be inside one of those warm Fairhaven coffee shops enjoying a hot chocolate or your favorite warm drink. Five inches of snow is predicted for later today. Maybe tomrrow’s photo will be a winter wonderland. We are getting our late January freeze a bit early this year. The Fairhaven Pharmacy, the maroon building on the right, has been operating from that corner building for 75 years, and in business for 115 years, making it our oldest business. The bricks down the center of Harris Avenue are left over from the trolley days when tracks went down the street to shops by the waterfront. Happy New YearFriday, December 31, 2004
The historic 11th Street in Fairhaven was at its winter best in today’s sunshine. This photo shows the heart of the district with the oldest buildings. There are shops on the street floors and professional offices on the second floors. One of the oldest buildings in this photo has the offices for Open Access, our Internet service in Fairhaven. The old with the modern. With the new year, Fairhaven is entering a building boom with over 200 condos and apartments now under construction in seven new buildings - all on the edges of the historic district. All are being designed to fit in with the district and not hurt the visual ambience. But it is up to we, the people who love, live in and work in Fairhaven to keep the fun and casual living ambience that has made our district so attractive to us all. Out attitude, along with the beautiful old buildings, creates a total ambience that visitors also love. We can keep our charm and attitude and not have it affected by the addition of new buildings. A place is made by the people. As 2005 progresses, let us remind ourselves that our attitude is the key part of Fairhaven’s ambience. Always has been. Happy New Year. Merry ChristmasSaturday, December 25, 2004
From all of us in Fairhaven to you and your loved ones, Merry Christmas. We hope you have a joyful holiday. Our treasured statue of Fairhaven founder Dirty Dan Harris seems to be enjoying the soft rain on this Christmas Day. The real Dan was a person with great vision and was not well understood. He would have been happier without the nickname, as he was never fully accepted into local society. Today, local society is most grateful for his vision and hard work in founding and promoting Fairhaven. ‘Tis perhaps a seasonal reminder to all of us that we should accept all persons as worthy of our respect, regardless of whether we fully understand them, their beliefs, or their life habits. The deciding factor for respect should be mutual respect. And close behind respect should be love - the message of Christmas. Daniel Jefferson Harris and his wife would have appreciated a bit more of that. Let us, the living, learn from the past and from history. Shopping in Historic FairhavenSaturday, December 18, 2004
Shoppers enjoy the small-store ambience of Fairhaven shops. With 44 shops within a four-city-blocks by two-blocks area, a present can be found here for most anyone. Paper Dreams has cards, calendars, posters, writing papers, and a wide variety of personal office items.
Hand-made useful pottery - including a beautiful lamp with hand crafted shade. Mud In Your Eye Pottery has all locally made pottery - much of it made right in their studio, visible behind their showroom. Indoor table top fountains, unique pots, chimes, and many items they make that are available only in their shop.
Wreaths, flowers and garden sculpture at A Lot of Flowers. That’s Penny wrapping something in her outdoor shop at the corner of Harris Avenue and 11th Street. This most-loved garden spot is staying open well after dark for the holiday shopping. New Candy Shoppe in FairhavenTuesday, December 14, 2004
That huge jar of candy? Someone will win it in a drawing on Saturday afternoon at 3 pm - drawn by Santa himself. The Fairhaven Candy Shoppe has just opened and is loaded literally with bushels of candy - from all over the world. There is no charge to enter the drawing. The Shoppe entry is just off the Village Green by the Dirty Dan statue - the old Village Books entrance. You know how big that jar is? Look at it next to Josiah, who is a big guy. Nice Christmas present. Stanello’s Celebrates 30 YearsSaturday, December 11, 2004
On Monday, Dec 13, Stan Velis is giving one great all-day party to celebrate 30 years in business. Special prices and prizes starting at 11 am and going to 11 pm. We invite you to plan a time to go by and enjoy the fun and enjoy 30% - for 30 years - off menu items. Come and enjoy the party. Beautiful Glass Art GiftsWednesday, December 8, 2004
The deep burgundy-colored glass is a signature in the works of Christopher Morrison, a Bellingham artist. Renaissance Celebration, at the corner of Harris and 10th, has a large selection of wall hangings, bowls and vases from the Morrison Studio. For a beautiful gift, you should browse this shop for choices of modest glass plates for a few dollars to the Bird of Paradise for over $3,000, shown in the center of this photo. Shop owner James Might will provide you with expert guidance to understanding this art form. Northwest Hand CraftedSaturday, December 4, 2004
All are locally hand crafted. Everything in this photo. By local folks. Artwood is a cooperative of a dozen highly skilled woodcrafts people in Whatcom and Skagit Counties. The many home furnishings are incredibly beautiful in design, finish and details. Artwood is on Harris Avenue, down near 10th Street. Near other shops with NW hand crafted gifts. Gallery Walk Under the LightsFriday, November 26, 2004
Harris Avenue in Historic Fairhaven is lined with shops and restaurants. From Harris, four side streets intersect and have more of both. A great place for holiday shopping. Over 30,000 lights are strung on these historic streets for the holidays. The Gallery walk continues on Saturday evening.
At Whimsey on 10th Street, local jewelry creator Lisa Chandler, on right, shows her latest inspirations to Kaye, at left. Most shops in Fairhaven feature local arts and crafts. Shopping here is a unique experience.
At Northland Specialties on Harris Avenue, Jim Shaw uses a technique called “chip carving” to decorate wooden plates. Many shops have the artists assisting customers or demonstrating their skills.
At Finnegan’s Alley Atrium on Harris Avenue, shoppers enjoy looking over all the furnishings and gifts. In this atrium is Fairhaven Furnishings and the Old Fairhaven Winery. The atrium entry is just next to Wild Blueberries toy store.
Gallery West at 12th & Harris has this perfect window which is always set up to perfection. This is one of Fairhaven’s oldest shops, and this window has been a touchstone for the seasons over the years. Here it is set for holiday shopping. We invite you to shop in Historic Fairhaven. You will enjoy your time here. Young Artists Paint Own PotteryTuesday, November 23, 2004
Decorating it their way. One of the more popular shops in Fairhaven is CreativiTea - formerly Paint Expressions - on 11th Street. Here, you select a white piece of pottery - plate, bowl, or other from a large selection - and you sit down and paint it your way. Then the shop has your piece fired so it becomes finished pottery; a few days later, it is ready for you to pick up. This photo shows their new shop with huge north-facing windows for great light. Below 10th On Harris AvenueSunday, November 21, 2004
Five great shops are often missed by visitors to Fairhaven because they are just a little farther down the hill on Harris Avenue. They are more than worth the extra walk to below 10th Street. Renaissance Celebration, with great glass art; The Chimney Sweep, with wood and gas stoves; mud in your eye practical pottery; Fairhaven Hardware and Garden; and Nature’s Window, with educational and scientific cool stuff, are all locally owned and provide locally created and crafted items. Check their listings for details. Fairhaven Candy Shoppe OpensSaturday, November 20, 2004
Oh oh—we’re all in trouble now! A candy shop right off the Village Green. Above, Rowan and April make some selections from the bushels of different candies. You choose different candies, put them in a paper bag and pay by the pound - with all at the same price. Pretty easy. Coming soon is a huge selection of chocolates from different countries - including Russia. All just in time for the holidays. Bohemiam Bliss In New LocationWednesday, November 17, 2004
Kay Mott shows customers some ideas for gifts. Kay has just moved to the space behind the Colophon soda fountain - where Village Books had children’s books. She is now open the same hours as the other shops in the building. Her Bohemian Bliss is crowded with gifts, costume jewelry and home decor - great for shopping, as these two are enjoying. Warm Reception for Village BooksSunday, November 14, 2004
Chuck and Dee Robinson greeted customers at the Grand Opening of their new store this evening. Village Books received a warm welcome from hundreds of its customers, and our bookstore gave a great party in return. They gave out well over 500 prizes through drawings. There was music - seen playing in the corner window - and refreshments and a good time of friends meeting friends. A memorable evening in Fairhaven. Grand Opening Sunday EveningSaturday, November 13, 2004
5 to 8 pm Sunday is the celebration. After years of planning and work, the new building is all they hoped. Owners Chuck and Dee Robinson, along with their staff, are giving a party. We are all invited. Refreshments, music and lots of your friends will be there. See you there. Plus, the other five shops and restaurants in the same complex are all joining in. What is really neat is you can go to all six businesses while staying inside the building - they each open on to the next. Pacific Chef OpensSaturday, November 6, 2004
“Tools for the serious cook” is their motto. Where is it? Where Village Books was. These folks wasted no time renovating and setting up their new shop. They carry high-end and high-value kitchen utensils, cookware, dishes, and most any and all things needed for cooking. Pacific Chef is open 7 days a week. Welcome to Fairhaven. |
