Fairhaven’s Newest Coffee Bistro

Saturday, June 28, 2003

Shipwrecked Coffee is now open, with the finest waterfront view in Fairhaven. Open 8 am till 6 pm every day of the week through the summer. Whether you work in Fairhaven or are visiting, this is an experience you will really enjoy. Where is it? Behind Fairhaven Boatworks, located down Harris Avenue and next to the boat launch ramp. Not the heart of Fairhaven, but you just have to check this out.

Crowd Enjoys First Movie

Saturday, June 28, 2003

The first movie to be shown on the NEW Village Green was a pleasant success tonight. Over 1,000 attended and enjoyed a bit of live rock music in the above photo. After sunset, the Beatles movie ‘Hard Day’s Night’ was shown.

The wooden pergola surrounds the audience on the Village Green, adding ambience to what proved to be an outstanding outdoor theatre. A movie is scheduled for every Saturday evening through July and August, ending with Harry Potter on Sep 6.

Engraving the Pavers

Friday, June 27, 2003

Over 240 more names were engraved on the brick pavers around the Village Green these past two days. Above, Dave Grabosky sprays blackening through the stencil and onto the engraved paver bricks.

The engraving crew has spent two days cutting names into about 240 brick pavers around the Village Green. From left, Luon Loth, Dave Grabosky and Sok Khorn of Kenadar Corp in Seattle.

(June 26) On the Village Green, over 200 bricks are being engraved with the names of donors to the Village Green Fund. The photo shows Luon Loth sandblasting a name into a brick.

Here is the very careful preparation for the sandblasting. After the name is cut into the brick, a black paint is sprayed on, resulting in a permanent engraving. Folks contributed $50 to the maintenance fund for the Village Green for each engraved paver brick.

Contributions are now being taken for the next engraving session. You can order in person at the Farmers Market on Wednesdays, or at several locations around Bellingham. Click here for a page of information about how to get your name or family name engraved on a brick.

Summer Movies on the Village Green

Friday, June 27, 2003

Starting this Saturday, June 28
Sunset it at 9:17 pm

Click Here for full Movie Schedule

The Village Green is perfectly designed for showing movies. Much better than it was during the past 5 years. I have looked very carefully into the supposed problems - none exist. The capacity of the Green is now greater than before, easily accommodating over 1,000 viewers. The off-center screen will allow seating up near the Dan Harris statue - and not hurt viewing from anywhere in the park. Trust me. Come on down for a wonderful time.

Every Saturday at sunset, from this Saturday until September 6, there will be a movie on the Village Green. They start as soon as it is dark enough, which on a sunny day is about 15 minutes after sunset. Donations of $4/person or $10/family are suggested.

This Saturday: ‘A Hard Day’s Night’, with the Beatles in their hilarious caper. Sunset is at 9:17 pm. The Pickford Traveling Show is putting on this movie and will have prizes for the winners of the Beatles theme.

Whidbey Island Bank Barbeque

Friday, June 27, 2003

Free lunch in Fairhaven this noon was enjoyed by many. On the lawn below their Fairhaven Office on Finnegan Way, they provided a fine spread, including lemonade and cookies. Folks came walking over from all over Fairhaven. Perfect day for it. Thanks to Leannette and staff.

Wednesday Farmer’s Market

Tuesday, June 24, 2003

Every Wednesday afternoon from 3 to 7 pm - all summer long - the Bellingham Farmer’s Market is on the Village Green. It resembles a European open air market with the pergola’s 21 stalls featuring produce, crafts, flowers, and even Mallard Ice Cream cones. Live music is usually quietly playing somewhere. Mark your schedule and come on down - if only even a short visit. The ambience is the best.

Village Books Marks 23 Years

Monday, June 23, 2003

Chuck and Dee Robinson, owners of Village Books, pose for a photo at last night’s 23rd Anniversary Party. They came to Fairhaven from Illinois in the spring of 1980 and started their book store. Over the years, Village Books has become the anchor store for the Historic Fairhaven District shopping area. Each year they put on a fine party for all their customers as a thanks for their patronage. Last night was great fun.

Summer Solstice in Fairhaven

Friday, June 20, 2003

As we post these, the Gallery Walk is ongoing in Fairhaven. The two gals above are discovering Andrea’s fine Alderflower drink from Sweden, which she sells at Northland Specialties.

The Annual Walk-a-Bout is held each June on the Friday closest to June 20. This year was cloudy and chilly, with a smaller number of folks visiting the galleries and shops. Those who came had a great time, of course.

The Fairhaven Ladies of the Evening Society was trotting around the Historic District streets this evening. They were being led by town criers from Anacortes and La Conner who were visiting us. We caught them after exiting from Dirty Dan Harris Restaurant.

Meanwhile, Chuck Robinson of Village Books keeps his cases of the new Harry Potter books in a secure area. Over 1000 books here. They will be released to customers at midnight.

Here’s Looking at You

Wednesday, June 18, 2003

Well, it is the day of the Farmer’s Market - and those are strawberries. The statue of Dan Harris on the Village Green gets a lot of personal attention every day. Little kids love to climb up on him. They love to stare him in the face as if expecting him to wink (maybe he does and only kids can see it). There is a little slot on his hat band for holding flowers and one from the flower boxes on the Village Books windows is often picked and placed there. Dan is a presence on the Village Green.

Wednesday Farmers Market

Saturday, June 14, 2003

Every Wednesday aftrnoon, 3 to 7 pm, on the Village Green. Through September. The Saturday market downtown is bigger but, for charm and beauty, the pergola shopping cannot be beat. Many of the same vendors come to the Village Green.

Summer is Here

Monday, June 9, 2003

The corner garden shop ‘A Lot of Flowers’ has been a Fairhaven sweet spot for many years. With summer, it almost becomes a living gallery. All of Fairhaven is now in summer session. We who live here take a lot of the charm for granted.

I’ll be posting more photos here of the normal sites in Fairhaven just to remind all of us how lucky we are. And to entice those of you from other places to visit Fairhaven and enjoy its historic charm.

Shakespeare on the Green

Monday, June 9, 2003

These young thespians are doing Shakespeare. Well, maybe a variation on the old bard. “Shakespeare To Go” they call it, and it was a real delight to watch them this afternoon. The new Village Green is perfect for the budding actors and their audience.

Ski to Sea Race

Sunday, May 25, 2003

It All Ends in Fairhaven
Was a great day of fun.
Check the photos of the Fairhaven Festival

Looking down on the festival. Historic Fairhaven was hopping today. Live music, lots of food, the beer garden, arts and crafts booths and a whole lot of fun.

Here is a link to Ski to Sea Race results.

Saturday Fun on Village Green

Saturday, May 24, 2003

Check more Saturday Photos

The pergola gave shelter from the rain and the crafts booths proved popular for kids on Saturday afternoon. Here they are painting dishes. Fairhaven businesses set up demonstrations of their crafts and some helped the kids participate.

The Navy is in Town

Friday, May 23, 2003

The USS Ford, a 453-foot Guided Missile Frigate, is docked at the Fairhaven Cruise Terminal for the weekend. Sorry, no public onboard tours. You can enjoy viewing it from the Cruise Terminal. The 200+ sailors all received coupon packets courtesy of Fairhaven Merchants.

We welcome the ship’s crew and officers to Fairhaven. Some crew are on two teams in the Ski to Sea race. They will also be in the parade on Saturday. The ship will depart at 7 am on Tuesday.

Spring Painting

Tuesday, May 13, 2003

Painting one of our public clocks are Jacci and Annette. It is so much fun when the ladder is set on a hill. All over Fairhaven things are being spruced up - partly for summer and partly for Ski to Sea.

A Beautiful May Day

Friday, May 9, 2003

Looking down Harris Avenue, with the leaves still breaking out, as the temperature hits 62 degrees in early afternoon - a fine Northwest day in May. We haven’t hung our summer flowers from the lamp posts yet - that will be done next week. Fairhaven is a fun place to be these May weekends. Lots of people on the streets, on the new Village Green and in the shops. All the restaurants have set out their sidewalk tables. Come on down. Wear your sun glasses.

Installing the Night Gate

Wednesday, May 7, 2003

Why does it take 6 guys to install a steel gate? Well, because the gate weighs over 300 pounds. Three were installed yesterday at the entryway for the new restrooms below the Village Green. The gates will be slid closed late each night by Parks Department staff. Some of the volunteers who helped install the pergola in January showed up to help yesterday. Nice work, guys.

Back to Normal

Wednesday, April 30, 2003

In the late afternoon sunshine, the new statue of Dan Harris on the new Village Green seems to be just normal. The Colophon Cafe has installed new tables for on-the-Green dining, or a coffee or a beer as a couple of us enjoyed yesterday. It has a European outdoor cafe feeling, as it was hoped it would have. The Green just fits - feels natural. We invite you to visit and enjoy the quiet ambience of the new Village Green. Say hi to Dan.

Village Green Dedication Day

The schedule of Dedication Day remains posted for fun and as a momento. Click the above poster to see it.

Thanks, Brian.

Sunday, April 27, 2003

I want to extend a hearty congratulations and community thanks to Brian Griffin, who envisioned the Village Green and worked for over two years to make it a reality. He deserves the thanks of all of us for his vision, focus and hard work. We now have a treasure of a public square for our enjoyment.

Tip, meet Dan Harris. Dan, meet Tip Johnson.

Saturday, April 26, 2003

Tip Johnson, who portrayed Fairhaven founder Dan Harris and rowed from Victoria to Fairhaven, sat down with the statue of Dan after unveiling it yesterday. Dan was notorious for smuggling rum from Canada and so Tip made a token offer to Dan. We should also credit Dan for many years of hard work helping to build Fairhaven and promote it as a fine community. Dan Harris had vision and worked hard to make it a reality. He succeeded and we honor him with this statue.

Dedication of New Fairhaven Village Green

Saturday, April 26, 2003

A full page of photos are now posted.

Music and fun all day and into the evening with thousands of people enjoying the long day. And, wow, sunshine and a warm day made it all a super day. The pergola worked just great for the vendors of food and crafts. The stage worked great and the ambience of the day was a good omen for future events on the Fairhaven Village Green.
