Harris Bay on a Summer MornThursday, July 24, 2003
With Lummi Island and Orcas Island in the distance, a Washington State Ferry in for maintenance, the Alaska Cruise Terminal ready for tomorrow’s ferry and sailboats moored in the sheltered bay, the Fairhaven waterfront is a beautiful and tranquil scene. Taylor Avenue Dock Work BeginsThursday, July 24, 2003
Tomorrow, Friday at 12 noon sharp, will be the Ground Breaking ceremony at 10th Street and Taylor Avenue for the restoration of the dock. Years in the planning, the Bellingham Parks Department will build a boardwalk connecting Boulevard Park and Fairhaven. Man From Past Plays BocceMonday, July 21, 2003
Dirty Dan Harris, the founder of Fairhaven in 1853, paid the Village Green a visit Monday afternoon and showed us his skill at Bocce Ball. Each Monday afternoon at 5 pm, people show up to play the game, with several being folks who have never played before. The Bocce courts have been provided by Tom McNutt, who sells them through his Boccemon website. Rumor has it a nearby restaurant is purchasing a court they will rent out. Dan, portrayed by Tip Johnson, was pretty good. He did doff those woolens after the photo was taken. It was 82 degrees on the Village Green. Painting the Terminal BuildingWednesday, July 16, 2003
Painting the frieze on the Terminal Building, Edmund Alexander focuses on the delicate work. Built in 1888, it is the oldest commercial building in Fairhaven. It is now home for Tony’s Coffee and the Harris Avenue Cafe. Workers are cleaning, repairing and painting all the wood on the building. This flag is not on top of the building, but a block away. More Bocce on the GreenMonday, July 14, 2003
Bocce ball is becoming a weekly event on the Village Green. It was built and they came. Today at 5 pm they showed up again. Nothing organized - yet. Some folks who stopped to watch were soon playing. Rumor has it the balls and portable courts may soon be rental from a business bordering the Green. And I admit to unabashed promotion of the game on this page. But it is so perfect for the green - and builds community as we meet new folks each time. What more invitation do you need?
Going North To AlaskaFriday, July 11, 2003
Campers and RVs drive on - or rather into - the Alaska Ferry ‘Columbia’ at the Cruise Terminal in Fairhaven on Friday. A steady stream of campers loaded in the late afternoon. ‘Tis the season when vacationers from all over the USA and the world come to Fairhaven and go north to Alaska. Two ships a week go north during the summer, with the first stop at Ketchikan, Alaska, 36 hours out of Fairhaven. Come on down at 6 pm on any Tuesday or Friday and enjoy the send-off of the Alaska Ferry. Farmer’s Market GrowsWednesday, July 9, 2003
The Wednesday Farmer’s Market on the Village Green continues to grow in popularity with both vendors and shoppers. All 21 booths are now filled and tents are appearing on the Green. Every booth has folks on a constant basis. The Market runs 3 to 7 pm every Wednesday through September. Bocce Ball in FairhavenMonday, July 7, 2003
They play it on town greens in every country in the world, and the game goes back thousands of years. This evening it was introduced to our Village Green. Above, two games are in progress. We are hoping that these portable game sets will be available soon for rental from a shop bordering the Green.
Town Criers Speak OUTThursday, July 3, 2003
Dressed in authentic colonial clothes, several Town Criers visited our Village Green today and gave impressive demonstrations of the human ability to speak loudly and clearly. In days of old, town criers were needed in every town. Today, the skill is kept up and passed on by the few. Criers from Anacortes, Nanaimo, La Conner and even England showed us their abilities on the Village Green. We don’t have a crier for Fairhaven. Maybe someone will learn the skill and volunteer. Today, they offer their services for birthdays, weddings, exhibitions, opening ceremonies and all sorts of special occasions. Yes! Vancouver 2010Wednesday, July 2, 2003
This morning the International Olympic Committee announced Vancouver will host the 2010 Winter Olympics. For over a year, this website has supported their bid. We would benefit from tourism - starting this summer - just the type of business we love. Just an hour north of Fairhaven, we feel part of the effort. You can follow the process at our Vancouver / Whistler page. You can sign up as a supporter at a special page at the Vancouver Committee web site. Fairhaven’s Newest Coffee BistroSaturday, June 28, 2003
Shipwrecked Coffee is now open, with the finest waterfront view in Fairhaven. Open 8 am till 6 pm every day of the week through the summer. Whether you work in Fairhaven or are visiting, this is an experience you will really enjoy. Where is it? Behind Fairhaven Boatworks, located down Harris Avenue and next to the boat launch ramp. Not the heart of Fairhaven, but you just have to check this out. Crowd Enjoys First MovieSaturday, June 28, 2003
The first movie to be shown on the NEW Village Green was a pleasant success tonight. Over 1,000 attended and enjoyed a bit of live rock music in the above photo. After sunset, the Beatles movie ‘Hard Day’s Night’ was shown.
The wooden pergola surrounds the audience on the Village Green, adding ambience to what proved to be an outstanding outdoor theatre. A movie is scheduled for every Saturday evening through July and August, ending with Harry Potter on Sep 6. Engraving the PaversFriday, June 27, 2003
Over 240 more names were engraved on the brick pavers around the Village Green these past two days. Above, Dave Grabosky sprays blackening through the stencil and onto the engraved paver bricks.
The engraving crew has spent two days cutting names into about 240 brick pavers around the Village Green. From left, Luon Loth, Dave Grabosky and Sok Khorn of Kenadar Corp in Seattle.
(June 26) On the Village Green, over 200 bricks are being engraved with the names of donors to the Village Green Fund. The photo shows Luon Loth sandblasting a name into a brick.
Here is the very careful preparation for the sandblasting. After the name is cut into the brick, a black paint is sprayed on, resulting in a permanent engraving. Folks contributed $50 to the maintenance fund for the Village Green for each engraved paver brick. Contributions are now being taken for the next engraving session. You can order in person at the Farmers Market on Wednesdays, or at several locations around Bellingham. Click here for a page of information about how to get your name or family name engraved on a brick. Summer Movies on the Village GreenFriday, June 27, 2003
Starting this Saturday, June 28
Click Here for full Movie Schedule
The Village Green is perfectly designed for showing movies. Much better than it was during the past 5 years. I have looked very carefully into the supposed problems - none exist. The capacity of the Green is now greater than before, easily accommodating over 1,000 viewers. The off-center screen will allow seating up near the Dan Harris statue - and not hurt viewing from anywhere in the park. Trust me. Come on down for a wonderful time. Every Saturday at sunset, from this Saturday until September 6, there will be a movie on the Village Green. They start as soon as it is dark enough, which on a sunny day is about 15 minutes after sunset. Donations of $4/person or $10/family are suggested.
This Saturday: ‘A Hard Day’s Night’, with the Beatles in their hilarious caper. Sunset is at 9:17 pm. The Pickford Traveling Show is putting on this movie and will have prizes for the winners of the Beatles theme.
Whidbey Island Bank BarbequeFriday, June 27, 2003
Free lunch in Fairhaven this noon was enjoyed by many. On the lawn below their Fairhaven Office on Finnegan Way, they provided a fine spread, including lemonade and cookies. Folks came walking over from all over Fairhaven. Perfect day for it. Thanks to Leannette and staff. **Thursday, June 26, 2003
Wednesday Farmer’s MarketTuesday, June 24, 2003
Every Wednesday afternoon from 3 to 7 pm - all summer long - the Bellingham Farmer’s Market is on the Village Green. It resembles a European open air market with the pergola’s 21 stalls featuring produce, crafts, flowers, and even Mallard Ice Cream cones. Live music is usually quietly playing somewhere. Mark your schedule and come on down - if only even a short visit. The ambience is the best. Village Books Marks 23 YearsMonday, June 23, 2003
Chuck and Dee Robinson, owners of Village Books, pose for a photo at last night’s 23rd Anniversary Party. They came to Fairhaven from Illinois in the spring of 1980 and started their book store. Over the years, Village Books has become the anchor store for the Historic Fairhaven District shopping area. Each year they put on a fine party for all their customers as a thanks for their patronage. Last night was great fun. Summer Solstice in FairhavenFriday, June 20, 2003
As we post these, the Gallery Walk is ongoing in Fairhaven. The two gals above are discovering Andrea’s fine Alderflower drink from Sweden, which she sells at Northland Specialties. The Annual Walk-a-Bout is held each June on the Friday closest to June 20. This year was cloudy and chilly, with a smaller number of folks visiting the galleries and shops. Those who came had a great time, of course.
The Fairhaven Ladies of the Evening Society was trotting around the Historic District streets this evening. They were being led by town criers from Anacortes and La Conner who were visiting us. We caught them after exiting from Dirty Dan Harris Restaurant.
Meanwhile, Chuck Robinson of Village Books keeps his cases of the new Harry Potter books in a secure area. Over 1000 books here. They will be released to customers at midnight.
Here’s Looking at YouWednesday, June 18, 2003
Well, it is the day of the Farmer’s Market - and those are strawberries. The statue of Dan Harris on the Village Green gets a lot of personal attention every day. Little kids love to climb up on him. They love to stare him in the face as if expecting him to wink (maybe he does and only kids can see it). There is a little slot on his hat band for holding flowers and one from the flower boxes on the Village Books windows is often picked and placed there. Dan is a presence on the Village Green. Wednesday Farmers MarketSaturday, June 14, 2003
Every Wednesday aftrnoon, 3 to 7 pm, on the Village Green. Through September. The Saturday market downtown is bigger but, for charm and beauty, the pergola shopping cannot be beat. Many of the same vendors come to the Village Green. Summer is HereMonday, June 9, 2003
The corner garden shop ‘A Lot of Flowers’ has been a Fairhaven sweet spot for many years. With summer, it almost becomes a living gallery. All of Fairhaven is now in summer session. We who live here take a lot of the charm for granted. I’ll be posting more photos here of the normal sites in Fairhaven just to remind all of us how lucky we are. And to entice those of you from other places to visit Fairhaven and enjoy its historic charm. Shakespeare on the GreenMonday, June 9, 2003
These young thespians are doing Shakespeare. Well, maybe a variation on the old bard. “Shakespeare To Go” they call it, and it was a real delight to watch them this afternoon. The new Village Green is perfect for the budding actors and their audience. Ski to Sea RaceSunday, May 25, 2003
Looking down on the festival. Historic Fairhaven was hopping today. Live music, lots of food, the beer garden, arts and crafts booths and a whole lot of fun.
