Saturday Evening Tour d’Art

Saturday, November 29, 2003

Saturday evening was the second night of the annual Holiday Gallery Walk, with over 30 shops open until 10 pm. Above, at Three French Hens, shoppers enjoyed browsing the many home gifts and refinements.

Harris Avenue below 11th is a solid block of great shops. Saturday was cold and clear, in contrast to the showers and wind of Friday. People tended to spend more time in the shops and less window shopping.

The Fairhaven Town Crier Andy was again on the streets and clearly telling folks about the various events and venues. His companion, Judy, assisted him. Together, they added a nice bit of the olde days to the evening.

Sycamore Square
is decorated for the holiday season. Shoppers at Oh! Urban Wear check out the clothes racks in the atrium. This favorite building has four floors, with open balconies on the three upper floors.

Friday Evening Tour d’Art

Friday, November 28, 2003

Artwood Gallery, of locally handcrafted wooden furniture, was alive with shoppers and folks just plain looking and enjoying. Over 30 shops are open ‘til 10 pm again on Saturday evening. Fairhaven shops feature local crafts and artwork.

Up at Northland Specialties, they were serving Scandinavian glogg - spelled with an ‘L’ - out on the sidewalk. This is apparently a popular holiday drink in those countries. More samples on Saturday evening.

The tree. Don White, the owner of Skylarks Hidden Cafe, has been adding lights to this tree for years now. The annual lighting of the tree took place at 5:30 pm sharp, with the assembled crowd doing a countdown for Don. The tree will remain lit ‘til very late each night through the holidays.

Lydia McCauley
sang at Nature’s Window on Friday eve. She also played the dulcimer and piano. Her CDs are for sale at the shop.

In front of Village Books, Brian and Mike were putting a sales pitch on Barbara to buy a bowler hat. All profits go to support the Fairhaven Fund and the new Village Green. They have even formed the Fairhaven Bowler Hat Society. All part of the good fun we have in Fairhaven.

This young fellow tried on a bowler hat. In the end, he decided against the purchase. The folks at the Fairhaven Fund hope he will check back on the Saturday evening of December 20 when they will again be selling the bowler hats in front of Village Books.

Harris Avenue was full of lights and window shoppers on Friday evening. The rain did not stop as predicted, but folks turned out anyway for the fun evening.

In Atrium
in the Finnegan’s Alley building, Local Women Artists ( that is the group’s official name ) put up an extensive display of paintings and cards.

And in closing these photos, here is The Tree, looking across Harris Ave and up the cobblestone walkway. Each year there are more lights added to the Fairhaven holiday decorations. We will be posting photos of shop windows and the street scenes for the next few weeks. Please check back.

Holiday Lights Are Going Up

Friday, November 21, 2003

The annual stringing of holiday lights by Don White of Skylark’s Cafe is in full swing these past two weeks. Different merchants have been volunteering each day to help him. Deb Martin of Good Earth Pottery spent most of Thursday afternoon helping. The lights get turned on at 5:30 pm next Friday, November 28, at the start of the annual Tour d’Art Gallery Walk. Bring the kids down for a fun event.

Harris Avenue Autumn Day

Monday, November 17, 2003

The trees are in full color. There is a briskness to the air, with our temperatures in the 50s each day. Don, the owner of Skylark’s Cafe, is busy with his volunteers putting up the strings of lights for the holiday season. This is one of those quieter times in Fairhaven.

Brrrr Bocce

Monday, November 3, 2003

It started last summer, during the long warm sunny Monday evenings. Now, they don’t seem to know when to quit for the winter. Yep, they brought out floodlignts on the Village Green this evening. Temperature? 37 degrees when this photo was taken - and dropping. Yes, they plan to play again next Monday, Nov 10 at 5 pm. Anyone can join them. No experience needed.

Adults will also get a kick from the wild motifs that will be on display for Friday and as far into the weekend as the weather allows.

Warm September Days

Saturday, September 27, 2003

Rick Brugger has been playing his steel drums next to Jacci’s Fish & Chips most every Saturday all summer. Summer continues today, with temperatures in the 70s. His mellow sounds float off a couple blocks, giving a nice background ambience to our streets.

A word about Rick. He is also a jazz musician. He taught himself to play the steel drums, but has yet to visit the Caribbean. I worked down there one wonderful winter and can tell you his playing is top notch. I want to give him a little plug here. You can book Rick for events. His phone is 676-8747. Thanks, Rick, for your sweet sounds all summer.

End of the Season for Market

Wednesday, September 24, 2003

The Farmers Market on the Village Green is over ‘til next June. Only a few of the vendors were there this afternoon, but they did a brisk business. The Green was perfect for the market. There is hope and plans for making next summer even better with a greater variety of foods. Farmers and vendors loved the glass roofs, which allowed the light through to show off the produce, foods and crafts.

Remember that Rusty Skeleton?

Thursday, September 11, 2003

They took the scaffolding down yesterday and lo - a beautiful new building - named Fairhaven Square - in the 1200 block of Harris Ave. The rusty skeleton of steel girders that stood for 28 years has been transformed. Normally, these construction photos are posted on the Buzz page, but this is special. There are 22 condos on the upper floors and a restaurant and shops on the first floor with basement parking. See the bright yellow banner- that is where the Coppa Bistro restaurant will open this autumn. Ebenal General, the owner and construction company, is to be commended for not only a beautiful building but also for protecting the street trees. That took extra effort, and we in Fairhaven appreciate it.

Two Runs Benefit In Need Kids

Saturday, September 6, 2003

The Blue Skies for Children foot race starts off on 11th Steet in Fairhaven. More than 80 people ran the enjoyable 4.5 miles of this benefit for homeless, low income, and foster children in Whatcom County. There are almost 6,000 children living below the poverty level in Whatcom County. Steve Rugoski, owner of Fairhaven Runners, helped organize, promote and started the races.

Yep, these four little ones
ran and walked the mile to help benefit other kids. This event will be held again next year, and we hope more young ones will participate.

On stage, singer Dana Lyons entertains the crowd before sunset and the movie “Hook”. Saturday night, the largest crowd of the summer filled the Village Green during another perfect summer evening. It is estimated over 800 people attended. The photo was taken well before the maximum crowd was reached after sunset.

The Tall Ship Lady Washington Visited Fairhaven

Sunday, August 24, 2003

She was here for six days - from Tuesday thru Saturday, Aug 19-24 - and thousands went over her decks as she was docked in Fairhaven at the Cruise Terminal. About 200 of us got to go out on Bellingham Bay aboard her. Those lucky ones on the Friday evening sail got an experience of a lifetime as she sailed the Bay in strong breezes, as shown below.

We thank the Lady Washington Captain and crew for their great hospitality and six days of free tours of their ship. We hope you will come back again next year for at least a few days.
