Gallery Walk on Beautiful EveningFriday, June 18, 2004
People filled the sidewalks of Historic Fairhaven this evening. A gentle sunshine and perfect summer evening temperature made for a great gallery walk. Shops and galleries had artists present, special displays and refreshments. The scene above looks up Harris Ave.
With Mannino’s restaurant now open, the cobblestone walkway to the Village Green has become another little special place in Fairhaven.
Looking down Harris Ave on a perfect summer evening, with the islands across Bellingham Bay barely visible. The Gallery Walk went ‘til 10 pm, and all accounts are it was great for everyone. Summer MornThursday, June 17, 2004
Harris Avenue early in the morning. Three blocks lined with shops and galleries awaits the Gallery Walk on Friday evening. Fairhaven and all the shops will be at their best for tomorrow evening’s fun time. Practicing for the TournamentTuesday, June 15, 2004
Three Bocce courts will be in play for the Bocce Ball Tournament. The photo above shows one of the practice sessions last week. Last report; you can see a full page of photos and reports on the Bocce Page. Improved Outdoor CinemaWednesday, June 9, 2004
A smooth coat of plaster was applied to the movie screen on the Village Green this week. When fully dry in a couple weeks, the smooth white plaster will improve the quality of movies. Above, Juan Galindo, who did the work, is removing the edge tape after his final trowling. Comcast Cable provided the funds for this work. They are also helping sponsor the Saturday evening outdoor movies this summer. We thank them for their community spirit. The first movie is on June 26 and they continue every Saturday, with the last movie on September 11. Movies start just after sunset. Summer Street Art in FairhavenMonday, June 7, 2004
Flowers on all the light poles - carefully watered and tended all summer by our Lions Club members. The Fairhaven Association, the organization of merchants and building owners, funds the summer tending and winter greenhouse caring. For over twenty summers, the hanging flowers have been a part of our street scene. Festival Rocks All AfternoonSunday, May 30, 2004
To Full Page of Festival Photos The Walrus played to a full crowd from the temporary stage on Mckenzie Ave. They were one of five bands that played into the evening. As the first racers finished about 2 pm, the sun came out and warmed up the party. A full page of festival photos is being put together for posting. Marching Down Cornwall AvenueSaturday, May 29, 2004
Bowler Hat Society marches down Cornwall Ave carrying the new district banner. They and the Ladies of the Evening Society all went up to Bellingham today and participated in the Bellingham Chamber of Commerce Ski to Sea parade. We have more photos of the ladies and lads on a page of their own. Movie “Summer Garden” FilmingSunday, May 23, 2004
Camera - Action. Fairhaven College students were filming a movie at Harris and 11th this morning. It is part of a major program for one of the students. The finished full-length feature film will be shown next winter at the Pickford Theatre in Bellingham. New Fairhaven Market ManagerWednesday, May 19, 2004
Meet Tracy Cozby, the new manager of our Fairhaven Market. Haggen, Inc., a Bellingham-based grocery store chain, took over ownership of the store when it opened this morning. An early-morning trip to the Market showed me familiar faces, same store and same products.
Say “Hi” to Tracy next time you are in the store. We welcome her and Haggen to Fairhaven. Village Green a Favorite PlaceTuesday, May 18, 2004
The Village Green is beginning its second summer of use for events. This year promises to be more popular as more groups discover how well it works. Over the weekend, the Washington Native Plant Society held a plant sale and general gathering. Rain or shine, the covered pergola provides 21 booth spaces that work well for most any sort of event. The Green is a Bellingham city park and can be reserved through the Parks Department. Driving on the Alaska FerryMonday, May 10, 2004
Driving to Alaska via the ferry is the start of some great vacations. Here, Virgil, the chief purser of the Malaspina, is checking the tickets as cars, trucks and campers board for the Tuesday evening sailing. Next stop is Ketchikan Alaska, on Thursday morning, 36 hours out from Fairhaven. The ferry continues on to Sitka, Skagway and other towns before returning to Fairhaven the next Tuesday. Many folks taking the Ferry arrive here a day or two ahead of schedule to enjoy Fairhaven - and to make sure they are not late for the ferry. Plus, Fairhaven is a great place to buy items needed for their trip. We in Fairhaven invite all Alaska-bound travelers to spend a day here before boarding. You will enjoy it. Alaska Ferry Arrives in FairhavenFriday, May 7, 2004
Every Friday morning, the Alaska Ferry arrives at the Cruise Terminal down at the foot of Harris Ave. Arriving this morning at 7:30 am, 36 hours non-stop from Ketchikan, the ferry will leave this evening about 6:30 pm. We love being the southern terminus of the ferry. We provide hospitality to a lot of interesting folks going to and coming from Alaska each week. Fairhaven is a more fun place because of the Alaska Ferry. Outside Dining In FairhavenThursday, May 6, 2004
We counted 6 restaurants with their outside tables set up in Fairhaven. Above, Jacci takes an order at her Fish & Chips eatery at the double decker bus. Some others are the Colophon, Mambo Italiano, D’Annas, Stanello’s and Skylark’s, with their outside tables now set up and serving. Summer has arrived in Fairhaven. Win’s Closes With A BangFriday, April 30, 2004
A rock band played from atop a stage on two huge dumpsters in the parking lot - and played ‘til the last burger was sold, about 10 pm. Hundreds enjoyed the music, courtesy of Tom and Mary Lue, the owners of Win’s. A festive scene all evening. They closed with class. (Thanks to Neil for above photo.)
The evening was unusually warm for April, and the crowd just grew as the 10 o’clock closing time approached. It was a special and rockin’ scene.
Monica, one of the employees at Win’s and the great-granddaughter of Winnifred Easterly, who started the drive-in back in 1964, relaxes after one of the busiest days ever at Win’s. After 40 years in the same family, the popular Fairhaven eatery has closed. The property has sold to a local developer. A Fairhaven institution has moved on. It may reopen after a short time with new managers. Win’s Is A-ChangingThursday, April 29, 2004
On Friday evening, a band will play from the roof of Win’s from 7:30 pm ‘til 10:30 pm. Contrary to a newspaper article today, there is no all-day party on Friday, according to one of the owners. But an evening live band - yes. A fun evening. We’ll take some photos.
Win’s Drive-In owners pose outside for one last photo. Friday will be their last day of operation after 40 years of steady serving all of us those great burgers, fries, shakes and fishwiches. From left are Tom and Mary Lue Walstrom, granddaughter Monica, grandson Gavin and daughter Kim Faye. Tom’s mother Winnie opened the burger place in 1964, moving an old A&W Root Beer stand to Fairhaven from the north side of Bellingham. The Walstroms have sold the property, but there are no plans yet for what may be built here. After Friday, the drive-in will be closed. Word on the street is new operators might reopen the restaurant. We will let you know as soon as we know. Dirty Dan Harris DaySaturday, April 24, 2004
A mellow time was had by all at the modest day celebrating the founder of Fairhaven. Chuck Dingee is shown providing us with a bit of guitar music. Several Fairhaven shops showed how their crafts and arts are made, with demonstrations under the pergola. Bocce ball was played on the center court of the Village Green.
child + water = magicFriday, April 23, 2004
With Dirty Dan Harris carefully watching over him, 4-year-old Ben experiments with hydraulic engineering at the pet-water fountain on the Village Green. Old Dan watches a lot of kids having fun on our pretty public square. A Quiet Moment in Tony’sSaturday, April 17, 2004
A coffee break in Tony’s on a chilly spring day warms the heart. With the greenery of Penny’s ‘A Lot of Flowers’ out the window, the ambience of Tony’s is hard to beat. Actually, there are several warm coffee shops in Fairhaven, but I was showing my aunt Ta where custom-roasted coffee started in the Pacific Northwest. New Home for Fairhaven BikesSaturday, April 10, 2004
Ready to move into his new store - you can see the empty sunlit showroom - John Hauter pauses with his family, friends and store staff for a photo on Saturday evening. Then it was all work ‘til very late Saturday night - walking new bicycles and carrying all the clothing and outdoor gear across the street from the old shop. For a larger view of photo, click here or on photo. Bocce Ball is Back for the SummerMonday, April 5, 2004
Dan Harris watches the first game of Bocce Ball on the Village Green this year on Monday evening. We wondered when it would start. Brian Griffin and his Bowler Hat Society showed up at 5 pm and set up the courts. Any person - young or old, experienced or first-time player - is welcome to join them any Monday evening from now until—well, the last game last year was in the dark on a very cold November evening. View From Padden LagoonSunday, April 4, 2004
Historic Fairhaven buildings up the hill overlook the Padden Creek Marina. This time of year, the boatyard is busy prepping yachts for the boating season. Yachts from all over the Northwest come to Fairhaven for their high-quality work. Currently, there are vessels here from Oregon, Alaska, California and of course, Washington state. Classic Cars and SunshineSunday, March 28, 2004
A perfect day for hanging out, enjoying beautiful cars and meeting old friends. This is the 20th year the Elites Car Club of Bellingham has held what they call their “Leprechaun Daze” on the streets of Fairhaven. Classic cars lined Harris Avenue and 11th Street and just fit in perfect with the historic buildings. A perfect spring day. Annual Fairhaven Plant SaleSaturday, March 27, 2004
A rainy morning was just routine spring weather for hundreds of folks at the annual Fairhaven Neighbors Tree & Plant Extravaganza. Held each spring, the event always features much-sought-after plants and trees. Our thanks to Ken Imus for allowing use of his parking lots at 11th and McKenzie streets. Lunch on the Cobblestone WalkWednesday, March 24, 2004
Lunch at Skylark’s Hidden Cafe beneath the spring blossoms of the plum tree this week. The Cobblestone walk passes between 10th and 11th streets with quiet shops and ends at the Village Green. Typical spring weather has warm 60s and sunshine half the day and showers the other half. |
