Follow Dale McKinnon’s Row to Fairhaven

Sunday, July 18, 2004

Dale McKinnon is rowing from Ketchikan, Alaska, to Fairhaven - over 700 miles - as a personal challenge and to help troubled teenagers. She has now rowed over 300 miles along the wild coast of Canada.

We can help by donating for every mile she rows to the Northwest Youth Services. You can go to their website and make a pledge. It all goes for their programs to help teens in trouble.

Dale’s rowboat being lowered into the cove next to the Addenbroke Lighthouse on the British Columbia coast. Sylvia, the daughter of the lighthouse keepers, is shown guiding her boat as it is lowered by the crane. Dale is over half way to Fairhaven on her over 700-mile rowing journey from Ketchikan, Alaska. More photos are posted on the page tracking Dales journey. She is doing it to raise money to help troubled teenagers.

Outdoor Cinema Is Popular

Saturday, July 17, 2004

Music till sunset and then an enjoyable family movie. It proved popular again this evening for the movie ‘My Big Fat Greek Wedding’. The nights stay warm and blankets are spread on the grass and lawn chairs on the brick pavers around the green. Popcorn and drinks are sold. Fairhaven businesses sponsor the movies. Find a movie that you like and plan a Saturday evening with someone you love - you will really enjoy the experience. Donations are $4 a person or $10 for a family. Every Saturday evening, ending on Sep 11 with ‘Peter Pan’.

Friday, July 16, 2004

The Fairhaven boat launching ramp was busy this afternoon as folks headed out for the weekend. Where? San Juan Islands, Inati Bay on Lummi Island across Bellingham Bay, a quiet weekend anchored in Chuckanut Bay - and even for a sunset cruise on the bay. In the background is the South Hill neighborhood above the Fairhaven Historic District.

Renting a kayak for an hour or a day is popular this time of year down at the Fairhaven Boatworks. Here, Forrest hoses off the salt water from returned boats late this afternoon. Whether exploring the shoreline down towards Chuckanut Bay or the Bellingham waterfront, or going across the bay to Lummi Island, Fairhaven is the perfect place to start from and return to.

Bowler Hat Society Formal Portrait

Thursday, July 1, 2004

Rodrigo del Pozo, eminent Fairhaven photographer high on the ladder, takes the formal portrait of the Fairhaven Bowler Hat Society this evening on the Village Green. With the bronze statue of Fairhaven founder Dirty Dan Harris lost in the middle of this photo, 79 members of the 200+ society squint into the bight evening sun.

The society is actually an informal group instigated by Brian Griffin, a retired fellow who keeps coming up with fun community ideas. If you have a bowler hat, then you are a member. Yep - they are all wearing their bowlers. As is Dan Harris.

Fairhaven Outdoor Cinema Season

Saturday, June 26, 2004

The first outdoor movie of the summer played to a full Village Green tonight. The Traveling Pickford Show, produced by the Whatcom Film Association, opened the 12-week season before a crowd of over 700 people. Every Saturday evening at sunset ‘til September 11 will feature a family movie and pre-show entertainment. Donations of $4 per person or $10 per family are requested.

The refurbished movie screen showed its improved viewing quality last night. Comcast provided the funds to plaster over the concrete blocks to a smooth surface and then paint the plaster a clean white. The fun and good feeling of outdoor movies are much of the reason so many folks attend.

Gene shares this duty with fout other Lions Club members. The flowers are a project of the Fairhaven Association, the organization of district businesses.

Bocce Tournament Great Success

Saturday, June 19, 2004

The final game was well played, with Timothy Villhauer’s team “Undecided” taking the trophy. Yep, Timothy didn’t come up with a catchy name fast enough and the committee left his name as originally entered. It was a perfect day in Fairhaven with over 100 people participating in the tournament.

Gallery Walk on Beautiful Evening

Friday, June 18, 2004

People filled the sidewalks of Historic Fairhaven this evening. A gentle sunshine and perfect summer evening temperature made for a great gallery walk. Shops and galleries had artists present, special displays and refreshments. The scene above looks up Harris Ave.

With Mannino’s restaurant now open, the cobblestone walkway to the Village Green has become another little special place in Fairhaven.

Looking down Harris Ave on a perfect summer evening, with the islands across Bellingham Bay barely visible. The Gallery Walk went ‘til 10 pm, and all accounts are it was great for everyone.

Improved Outdoor Cinema

Wednesday, June 9, 2004

A smooth coat of plaster was applied to the movie screen on the Village Green this week. When fully dry in a couple weeks, the smooth white plaster will improve the quality of movies. Above, Juan Galindo, who did the work, is removing the edge tape after his final trowling.

Comcast Cable provided the funds for this work. They are also helping sponsor the Saturday evening outdoor movies this summer. We thank them for their community spirit. The first movie is on June 26 and they continue every Saturday, with the last movie on September 11. Movies start just after sunset.

New Fairhaven Market Manager

Wednesday, May 19, 2004

Meet Tracy Cozby, the new manager of our Fairhaven Market. Haggen, Inc., a Bellingham-based grocery store chain, took over ownership of the store when it opened this morning. An early-morning trip to the Market showed me familiar faces, same store and same products.

The store name
will remain the Fairhaven Market, the website will stay as www.fairhavenmarket.com, and the CARD will not be used at this store. All good news for us Fairhaven residents.

Say “Hi” to Tracy next time you are in the store. We welcome her and Haggen to Fairhaven.

Village Green a Favorite Place

Tuesday, May 18, 2004

The Village Green is beginning its second summer of use for events. This year promises to be more popular as more groups discover how well it works. Over the weekend, the Washington Native Plant Society held a plant sale and general gathering. Rain or shine, the covered pergola provides 21 booth spaces that work well for most any sort of event. The Green is a Bellingham city park and can be reserved through the Parks Department.

Driving on the Alaska Ferry

Monday, May 10, 2004

Driving to Alaska via the ferry is the start of some great vacations. Here, Virgil, the chief purser of the Malaspina, is checking the tickets as cars, trucks and campers board for the Tuesday evening sailing. Next stop is Ketchikan Alaska, on Thursday morning, 36 hours out from Fairhaven. The ferry continues on to Sitka, Skagway and other towns before returning to Fairhaven the next Tuesday.

Many folks taking the Ferry arrive here a day or two ahead of schedule to enjoy Fairhaven - and to make sure they are not late for the ferry. Plus, Fairhaven is a great place to buy items needed for their trip. We in Fairhaven invite all Alaska-bound travelers to spend a day here before boarding. You will enjoy it.

Alaska Ferry Arrives in Fairhaven

Friday, May 7, 2004

Every Friday morning, the Alaska Ferry arrives at the Cruise Terminal down at the foot of Harris Ave. Arriving this morning at 7:30 am, 36 hours non-stop from Ketchikan, the ferry will leave this evening about 6:30 pm. We love being the southern terminus of the ferry. We provide hospitality to a lot of interesting folks going to and coming from Alaska each week. Fairhaven is a more fun place because of the Alaska Ferry.
