Pavers Go Back

Wednesday, October 20, 2004

Village Green pavers are being replaced in the exact spots they were lifted from last January when construction began. If you bought one of the pavers and had it inscribed, then you will find it at the same location by this weekend. Yes, that is the doorway to the new Village Books - which will open for business on Monday at 9 am.

Village Books Nears Opening

Monday, October 18, 2004

Bollards were installed today behind the new Village Books building. Here, Samuel, an employee of Ebenal Construction, aligns them before pouring the concrete.

Yes, this will be an outside dining area, the same as the popular Colophon Cafe dining area. There will be a coffee cafe in the new Village Books that will cater to this area. We expect the brick pavers to be reinstalled this week, completing our Village Green.

New Condos Rise On Harris

Monday, October 11, 2004

Against the backdrop of historic buildings in the 900 block of Harris Avenue, a complex of three new condo buildings are rising. Named Harris Square, residents will be within 2 or 3 walking blocks of all the services they will need - grocery store, hardware store, pharmacy, grooming, dentists, doctors, lawyers, and of course, restaurants and shops. This view looks northwest, out over Bellingham Bay. You can learn more at their website www.harrissquare.com.

Indian Summer Outside Dining

Friday, October 1, 2004

Jacci’s Fish & Chips in the old English double decker bus is a favorite lunch spot in Fairhaven. These warm, sunny autumn days are great for taking the tables on the patio. Fairhaven has eleven restaurants with outside dining - on the Village Green, on second-floor street-front balconies, on the sidewalks, outside decks, enclosed gardens, or an outside patio as shown above. We invite you to visit on these warm Indian Summer days.

Last Farmer’s Market of Year

Wednesday, September 29, 2004

The flowers were selling and so were the fall vegetables at the last Farmer’s Market of the year on the Village Green. Nancy VanDeHey, far right, owner of Harmony Farms in Everson, has sold vegetables and flowers on every market day this summer. She serves on the planning committee of the Bellingham Farmer’s Market and has been a strong supporter of the Fairhaven Market. We thank her for helping make the market a success.

Saving the Trees

Tuesday, September 28, 2004

Gently scooping tree, roots and plenty of supporting soil, this incredible machine removed a Sweetgum tree from the site of the new building at Mill and 11th. Ebenal Construction held off work on this section of the property long enough to allow the saving of the trees - and we thank them. Big Tree Supply from Snohomish came at no charge and transplanted it to another location. They have a 98% survival record for their transplanted trees, so the future is good for this healthy tree.

Tipped on its side for a ride down the freeway, the tree will be gently wrapped in a light cloth to snug the branches together. We thank Erin of the Re-Store and Sue Tercek of Edgemore for their invaluable help in saving the two Sweetgum trees. We looked for a place in Whatcom County to take the trees but found none, so they will find a new home in the Seattle area - possibly a city park. And we thank Ebenal Construction for three times extending the additional days we requested to find a way to save the trees. Everyone worked together. Our Fairhaven habit.

Chinese Moon Festival

Saturday, September 25, 2004

The chorus of young singers on the Village Green stage sang of the moon (I think) - with the almost-full moon rising above the trees. The singing was in Chinese and captivated the estimated 200 people who came to enjoy the festival.

Afternoon rehearsal. These dancers practice under the careful eyes of their instructor. And the watchful eyes of a young admirer. We thank everyone for a great afternoon and evening. The moon festival is an annual event. We hope it will be on the Village Green again next year.

Taylor Ave Dock Dedication

Friday, September 24, 2004

Ribbon Cutting and Dedication of a fantastic dock and the vital last link in our shoreline trail system. The sunshine and crisp air were perfect for the ceremony. Looking down the Taylor Dock to the rebuilt railroad trestle that is now a walkway.

Paul Leuthold, Bellingham Parks Director, opens the ceremony at 4 pm today. The Parks department had to work for years to get state government permission to reconstruct the old freight dock and railroad trestle into a pedestrian and bicycle dock. We thank them for their efforts, as the dock is a super addition to our waterfront. To Paul’s right is Bellingham Mayor Mark Asmundson.

A fine crowd of a couple hundred people attended this dedication. Most or all have already enjoyed walking the dock since its opening a couple weeks ago. As can be seen here, the railings are super secure for adults and even the youngest of children. In the background is Mayor Mark Asmundson giving his formal dedication speech.

Memorial Tablet Reinstalled

Wednesday, September 22, 2004

Commemorating Whatcom County soldiers who lost their lives, the memorial tablet is installed on the new brick wall at the relocated Fairhaven Veterans Memorial. Mike of Ebenal Construction fastened the three refurbished plaques this afternoon. Here Tom, his super, gives him a hand. Ebenal has taken care of all the expense of moving the memorial, most of which was done in July. Photos of the move are posted.

Sunset at Taylor Ave Dock

Sunday, September 12, 2004

Strolling down to the bay. Earlier this week, it was sunny and local Internet photographer John Meloy caught this photo. With the welcome soft rain this week, we are told people continue to stroll down the dock and enjoy the vistas of the bay and shoreline.

Great Summer for Outdoor Cinema

Saturday, September 11, 2004

The last movie of the summer played Saturday. ‘Peter Pan’, the new Australian version, drew over 300 kids and parents - and some young-at-heart adults - for a great last showing on the Village Green. Of the 12 scheduled movies this summer, only one was cancelled because of rain. All the movies were rated G or PG for family entertainment.

We want to thank the 25 Fairhaven businesses who helped sponsor the movies, the volunteers who helped usher the movies, the Traveling Pickford Show for producing 5 of the movies, and all who donated when they attended. Of course, the movies will be back again next summer starting on June 25. We’ll post the schedule here in May.

Music on the Village Green

Saturday, September 4, 2004

Anna Schaad and her friends provided an hour of beautiful music before the movie “The Sound of Music” this evening. It was another magical evening. Thanks to John Meloy for the photo.

Part of the magic evening has no photo, as it happened at 10:30 pm. After over 2 hours of movie, a rain shower moved over Fairhaven. As the rain increased, some folks left, but most simply moved off the grass and under the pergolas to continue watching the movie. They were enjoying this great musical and weren’t going to let a little rain interfere. And besides, the Trapp family was in the middle of escaping Austria.

We continued to show the movie, and a couple hundred folks stayed and enjoyed it to the end - and then gave a round of applause. Everyone was so mellow and friendly. The rain ended before the movie did, and everyone had a dry walk to their cars and homes. No photo, but what a neat sight of everyone under the pergolas. Well, except for about a dozen die hards who pulled their blankets over their heads and watched to the end from the middle of the green.

A very sweet and memorable evening. Thanks everyone.

Why Our Green Remains So …

Thursday, September 2, 2004

We thank Ken of Bellingham Parks Department for his care of our Village Green. He uses many techniques to repair the small injuries to the Green, which sees thousands of people and pets every week. While he cares for many of the city parks, he told me that he especially loves the Green and enjoys his duty of caring for it. He has two assistants, Paul and Alex, whom we sometimes see doing maintenance also. ‘Tis the end of a rough summer and the Green is still perfect for the hundreds who will enjoy the Outdoor Cinema this weekend. Ken’s care shows.

Taylor Avenue Dock - It’s Open

Friday, August 27, 2004

Bicyclists and walkers go down the renovated Taylor Avenue Dock this noon as the construction fences were opened for the public. At the bottom is the beginning of the boardwalk - actually a concrete walkway - that goes a quarter mile north to Boulevard Park.

We can now walk the two miles from Fairhaven to downtown Bellingham completely on a great trail system. No more problems getting down to the park or over the RR tracks.

Bellingham Parks Department staff, Carl, opens the third and final fencing to fully open the dock and the south trail connection. Behind Carl is Mollie, visiting from Denver, who has just finished walking the boardwalk and dock from Boulevard Park and became the first person to walk through as the fence was taken down.

The walkway is perfect.
Wide, level, safe for kids and with vistas in every direction. Within half an hour of the final fencing being taken down, I counted over 50 people streaming onto the dock. We’ve waited 20 years for this and now it is part of our waterfront. Our thanks to Greenways and the Bellingham Parks for making it happen. We will enjoy it.

Full Postal Services Are Back

Thursday, August 26, 2004

Yorky’s Market is providing our new postal services and they are fully up and running. Here, Angie, one of the new postal clerks, goes over procedures with one of the USPS trainers. Hours for mailings, stamps and special services are Mon - Fri, 10 am to 4 pm, Sat 10 am to 2 pm.

Access to the mail boxes is now 24 hours a day, as Yorky’s is open 24/7. After months of no Fairhaven service, we tip our hat to Matt Yorkston and his staff for bringing the service back.

Taking a Waterfront Tour

Sunday, August 22, 2004

Four gals board the harbor ferry Fairhaven this weekend for a fun two-hour tour of the Bellingham waterfront. This 37-passenger tour boat runs each Friday, Saturday and Sundary from the Cruise Terminal in Fairhaven. For only $12 an adult, less for kids, you get a great value and a fun time. The tours end on Monday, Sep 6, Labor Day. This is the first summer it has run and, according the the Victoria - San Juan Cruises folks, it has been a good success. We urge anyone to experience this cruise before our summer ends.

Dale Arrives From Alaska

Saturday, August 14, 2004

She rowed 778 miles from Ketchikan, Alaska, to Fairhaven in an 8-week journey. Fairhaven resident 59-year-old Dale McKinnon did it as a personal challenge and for the kids - to help raise funds for Northwest Youth Services. Two teenagers who have benefited from their program, Lance and Brenda, welcomed Dale at the Fairhaven Boatworks dock this morning at 11 am.

See the Dale McKinnon Row page for more information.

Joules and Kids Dancing

Saturday, August 14, 2004

A fun and magic moment tonight. Joules Graves was playing guitar before the movie and she sang a song about dancing with the children - and kids just started going up on the stage to dance while Joules continued to play. Joules loved it and so did the audience - and the kids enjoyed it most of all. Thanks to John Meloy for this photo.

Village Green on Saturday Evening

Saturday, August 14, 2004

The setting sun gives historic buildings a surreal quality and the Village Green an alpen-glow light. The movies have been more popular than ever this summer. There are four movies still to go - ‘The Apartment’, ‘Seabiscuit’, ‘The Sound of Music’ and finally ‘Peter Pan’ closing the season on Saturday, September 11. The total evening experience - the friendly crowd, the pre-show music, the beauty of the sunset, the quality of the new movie screen - all combine to make the evening a unique and fun experience. Hope to see you there. And thanks to John Meloy for the great photo.

She will be playing those incredible drums and her guitar and singing songs in her unique and wonderful way. She chose the movie she wanted to play before - and it was ‘E.T.’ Kids will love her.

Alaska Ferry Friday Departure

Friday, August 13, 2004

Passengers line the railings as the Columbia, the queen of the Alaska Marine Highway fleet, slips her lines and moves away from the Cruise Terminal in Fairhaven. Every Friday evening of the year at 6 pm it departs for its 36-hour, 676-mile, non-stop journey to Ketchikan and then on to Skagway, another 380 miles. It returns each Friday morning, having completed its round trip.

Our Cozy Green

Thursday, August 12, 2004

‘Some Enchanted Evening’ was the name of the musical being performed on stage and an apt description of the evening. Whether packed with people or a modest group, our Village Green is a comfortable place for our public events.

Morning Exercise on the Green

Tuesday, August 10, 2004

Our Village Green. We are learning to use it for more and more activities. It was only 16 months ago that we dedicated this beautiful public space. And with each month, more activities get scheduled on it. Many activities take place that are not even publicly scheduled. As is appropriate in a true public square. When you are in Fairhaven, take a detour through the Green for a pause and to enjoy a quiet moment. And to enjoy whatever activity is happening.

Any Way You Like It

Thursday, August 5, 2004

The musicians are under the pergola and the audience is on the stage. Well, it is a bit shady under the pergola. And the stage is now available for a bit of impromptu dancing. Rick Brugger, on his steel drums, along with the SocaNuts with guitar and bass provided free music this noon on the Village Green.
