A photo of her with Dale ChihulySaturday, September 30, 2006
As a friend takes the photo of the two of them, she shows her delight in a photo with famed glass artist Dale Chihuly at a book signing session today at Village Books. Dale signed his new book “Fire” for the many folks who bought it. Yes, that is the line of folks with their books stretching around the corner outside the window. And it stretched down the sidewalk and onto the Village Green. He is one of the great artists of our time and we are fortunate that he visited us here. It was another fun day in Fairhaven. We can’t promise many events like this, but keep an eye on the Events page for things that appeal to you. We do our best to list all the events in Historic Fairhaven and the immediate surrounding area. AW Asian Bistro opens in FairhavenFriday, September 22, 2006
We warmly welcome this fabulous new restaurant to Fairhaven. Manager Andy Mei’s Sushi Bar and Asian Grill is finally open and southside residents are flocking to try out the food. All reports are this is absolutely first class. Beautiful decor, comfortable tables, convenient counter bar and superb food. He has Vietnamese, Chinese, Japanese, Hawaiian, Thai and even a little Mongolian. He offers a long list of appetizers, classic stir fries, several well thought out entrees, maki and nigiri sushi plus full sushi dinners along with a fine selection of beers from several Asian countries, wines and very nicely served teas. And of course sake. Wow - Fairhaven has an Asian restaurant. A very good one. (Of course no MSG in the cooking.) The restaurant is at the corner of Mill and 12th. Does that give you to pause? It is in Ebenal’s new Fairhaven Gardens building. We happen to know that Ebenal could have booked in a couple chain restaurants but held out for a family owned one. We in Fairhaven thank him. This places is across the street from the library, or across Mill from Key Bank. It is open every day from 11 or 11:30 till 9 pm or later. The exact hours are on their listing on the dining page. The A.W. is for the owners Anita and Wilson and they didn’t really know of the A&W Root Beer name when they named the restaurant. We have no problem with that. Welcome to Fairhaven and thanks for coming here. Fine shopping in Historic FairhavenFriday, September 15, 2006
In the Artwood Gallery on Harris Avenue are the most beautiful hand crafted wood furniture and accessories for our homes. If you have not browsed this shop then you are in for a treat. While many of the larger pieces are expensive - and worth it - there are also many small items, like boxes and lamps, that are priced for anyone’s budget. This Bubinga rocker nearest us in this photo was built by Ed Steckmest, one of the dozen woodworking members with pieces in the gallery. Artwood provides us with the finest in Northwest designs in wood. It is one of the reasons Fairhaven has its reputation for fun shopping. There are many shops here with unique offerings. What is amazing is that with as many shops as a normal mall, every shop and gallery is locally owned - not a single chain store in Historic Fairhaven. Art, clothing, jewelry, books, pottery, antiques, cooking ware, shoes, sport equipment, wood stoves, educational items, toys (four shops), home decor, and much more are all within a short three block radius. Less walking than at a mall - and much more beautiful. Come here and browse one of the finest shopping districts in the Northwest - Historic Fairhaven. September weather and music on the GreenSunday, September 10, 2006
Lounging under the pergola and enjoying the music on the Village Green today, many folks continue to enjoy our beautiful September weather. With the temperature in the 70s and not a cloud in the sky, we are enjoying typical early fall days. There will be music on the Village Green several more times this month, including music each Wednesday during the Farmer’s Market. Watch the Events schedule as there is another nice musical event that may be scheduled for Sat, Sep 30. Come on down and enjoy the last days of summer in Fairhaven. Dining next to the Village Green draws an audienceSaturday, September 2, 2006
This evening was the last outdoor movie of the summer with the latest Harry Potter movie closing out the season. Doug Borneman and his staff - especially Joe - gave us a great season of ten well organized movies. Every Saturday evening saw a great crowd enjoying a family movie. The movies will return on June 30, 2007 - and we will post the schedule here next spring. We want to thanks the folks at this table on the deck at Mannino’s Restaurant for allowing the roving photographer to include them in this photo. Taylor Ave Dock jams with musicSaturday, September 2, 2006
The Atlantics played till sunset - and an encore in the dusk - under the new pavilion on the Taylor Avenue Dock this evening. As you can see, the dock was crowded with appreciative folks - young and old. The dock is only four blocks from the Village Green - an easy walk on the South Bay Trail. Our new dock is only a year old and already a treasured place for all of us to walk and unwind. Off for a day of sailing on the baySaturday, August 26, 2006
Ham Hayes of Valhalla Marine Adventures in Fairhaven, takes the protective cover off the main sail as he prepares to take some guests out for a day of sailing on Bellingham Bay. And, with decent wind, perhaps beyond to Cypress Island or around Lummi Island. Valhalla Marine offers sail and power boat ventures for day trips, like this one, or for extended cruises in the San Juan Islands. September is agruably the finest month of the year for boating in the Northwest - so if you would like a perfect getaway then check out Ham’s Valhalla website. Amtrak to Fairhaven every morningFriday, August 25, 2006
Every morning at 9:45, people arrive in Fairhaven via Amtrak. Just 4 short blocks from the Historic District. The train leaves Seattle at 7:40 am for the two hour trip that includes travel along the Chuckanut shoreline with the views of the San Juan Islands and including several tunnels. For a fun weekend, many folks even bring a bicycle in the baggage car for a weekend riding our scenic roads. After a five minute stop here, the train continues on to Vancouver, Canada. There are two northbound to Vancouver and two southbound to Seattle trains each day - seven days a week. What is more, across the street from the Amtrak station is the Cruise Terminal with ferries to the San Juan Islands and the Alaska Ferry to - well, way north. Do you live in Seattle or Vancouver? Consider a vacation from driving and catch the Amtrak to Historic Fairhaven for a great getaway. Thanks to Linda “Fiddlin Fox” for dancing musicSunday, August 20, 2006
She brought us six great Sunday evenings of lively music this summer. Linda Fox loves dancing and dancing to fun music. Behind her in this photo are the Eskalators playing this evening on the Village Green to the delight of a modest audience. The concerts have been free to all and were a gift from Linda to our community. The music groups have been the Kosher Red Hots, Misty Flowers, The King Bees of the Bayou, Banda Gozona, Bent Grass and the Eskalators. She will return next July with a revised series that will include dancing instructions - a progression from this year. Linda, we thank you. Bocce is for all agesMonday, August 14, 2006
Each Monday evening at 5 pm there is open play bocce ball on the Village Green. And as you can see above, it is enjoyed by all - not just older folks. This is the first time playing this fun game for some of these folks but anyone can throw a ball and the fun is in trying to get it closer to the small white ball - the palino. Simple. Yes, and fun. Every Monday evening this summer has seen old regulars and new players on the Green. Come on down and join us. Greta Matassa brings us a perfect eveningFriday, August 11, 2006
The Village Green shows why it is such an outstanding venue for live performances. The setting sun glows off the fir posts on this side as the audience enjoys the clean outside air and the great acoustics of this beautiful space. Greta was superb, giving us the full range of her jazz singing on a warm summer evening. The Bellingham Festival of Music provided this free concert during their annual two week festival. We thank them. And this Sunday afternoon is more live music with the big band Northern Lights Orchestra from 1:30 to 3:30 pm. Free. With over a dozen great restaurants within 2 blocks of the Village Green we have all you need for a fun afternoon. Just check the Dining page for full information. Western Summer Theater in FairhavenFriday, August 11, 2006
Great singing and great energy. Western Washington University’s Summer Stock performed Godspell on the Village Green stage last evening to a large appreciative audience. Despite threatening clouds during the day, the evening was pleasant and another great experience for several hundred people - both on the stage performing and on the Green watching. The audience gave the actors a standing ovation at the end.
There are more events planned for the Green this summer - including Greta Matassa this evening at 7:30. It is free and will be a great evening of jazz courtesy of the Bellingham Festival of Music. The weather prediction is for partly sunny and 67 degrees. Perfect. See you there?
Young musicians perform on the GreenFriday, August 4, 2006
A young woodwind quintet entertained visitors to the Fairhaven Village Green with classical music at noon today. The musicians are part of Marrowstone Summer Music Concert Series presented by Seattle Youth Symphony Orchestras during their summer stay at WWU.
Banda Gozona Performs on the Village GreenSunday, July 30, 2006![]()
Banda Gozona ( music of Oaxaca, Mexico ) performed on the Village Green on sunday, along with native Oaxacan dancers. A sizable audience was in attendance enjoying the music and sunny afternoon.
Boatbuider prepares for big test of latest designSaturday, July 29, 2006
Ron Mueller of Wayland Marine on the Fairhaven waterfront, is making the final tweaks to his latest boat. It is an 18 foot long sailing and rowing craft that is perfect for beach camping. He designed and built the boat in his shop and will now race it and hopefully win the regatta next month through the Canadian Gulf and San Juan Islands from Nainimo to Port Townsend. For years, Ron has been designing and selling kits for beautiful rowing boats at his local shop. By the way - if you look closely in the boat just this side of Ron’s leg you can see one of the two sliding seats used for rowing. Yes, that is a wooden boat, constructed with the stitch and glue method. Beautiful and practical. Anyone can visit Ron’s shop just down on Harris Avenue. You can look up his business listing under the ‘Play’ button at the top of this page. Lunch outside in Fairhaven in the SummerWednesday, July 26, 2006
Perfect. An experience we all enjoy so much. Above, at Jacci’s Fish & Chips, diners enjoy salmon or halibut with side dishes. Salmon & chips - a unique treat. In Fairhaven there are nine restaurants with outside dining - providing great choices for any taste and pocketbook. Treat yourself to a long lunch this summer in Fairhaven. You will remember it. Fondly. Yakima Valley comes to FairhavenMonday, July 24, 2006
This evening from 6 to 8 pm is a grand wine tasting at the Cruise Terminal courtesy of the wineries in the Yakima Valley. Twenty two vinters will be providing tastes of over 100 different wines from the premium wine growing valley of Washington State. There is a $35 ticket cost to enjoy the evening. The above photo was take this afternoon during the tasting by local wine buyers for restaurants, stores and distributors. And the media. If you enjoy wines then this event is for you. We have featured it as the ‘Next Major Event’ in the left column for a week. Cool Marine Park on the Fairhaven waterfrontFriday, July 21, 2006
These kids know where the cool is when the temperature hits 90 degrees - like it did today in Fairhven. That is hot for us in the Northwest. Very hot. Record hot. We know it will last only a day or two and then cool down. Marine Park, at the foot of Harris Avenue, is one of our little treasures. Any season of the year it provides a calm view of Lummi Island and, behind, Orcas Island in the middle of the San Juan Islands. A quiet place to have a picnic lunch or read a book. Or just wade in the water looking for little sea critters. Quickdraw String Band Performs for Record Crowd at Outdoor CinemaSunday, July 16, 2006![]()
The Quickdraw String Band opened for Outdoor Cinema showing of “Pride and Prejudice”. A record crowd was in attendance and the Village Green was at near capacity with moviegoers overflowing onto the pavement under the pergola. The Louisiana Repertory Jazz Ensemble performed in Fairhaven this evening. They were scheduled to perform on the Village Green as part of the Blaine Jazz Festival, but due to inclement weather they had to move indoors to the ferry terminal. The terminal was packed and the crowd was buzzing, with people dancing on the upper level to the traditional jazz sounds of New Orleans.
Chuckanut Footrace draws over 900 runnersSaturday, July 8, 2006
The 39th running of this oldest footrace in Washington State set a record for entrants under the management of our Fairhaven Runners. This photo shows the start of the race as the runners start at the RR tracks on Harris and then turn up 4th Street on their way to the Interurban trail.
As they run up the hill on 4th Street, you can only see less than half the almost 1,000 runners. Last year about 450 participated, a dramatic increase for this year. The weather was perfect with the temperature a comfortable 65 degrees. The race is 7 miles long, with most of it on the beautiful Interurban Trail with views of the islands over Chuckanut Bay.
Volunteers register the runners down at Marine Park. Steve Roguski, the owner of Fairhaven Runners, his staff and a well organized group of volunteers did a smooth job handling the registration and race start. It was a full featured event, with electronic timing chips attached to running shoes, aid stations along the trail, music at Larrabee State Park race end, and shuttle buses bringing riders back to Fairhaven. Race results are posted on the www.fairhavenrunners.com website. Dancing music every Sunday eveningSunday, July 2, 2006
You can tell it was a very warm afternoon - as the audience is clustered on the shady side of the Village Green. Normally we in the Pacific Northwest love sitting in the sun. Today was the first in a series of Sunday evening music sessions. Not concerts - but dancing music. And if you look closely, you can see Jamie on the grass teaching some young ones how to hula hoop to the music. Linda Fox, who helped start contra dancing years ago in Bellingham, is the person and energy behind this. You can check the Events page to learn what group will perform each Sunday from 5 to 7 pm. She is putting these on as free to the public. We thank you, Linda. Village Green packed for first movie of summerSunday, July 2, 2006
With “La Push” onstage playing funky music, a huge crowd enjoyed the sunset Saturday evening and waited for darkness and the movie “Dodge Ball”. Show sponsors had tables set up under the Pergola, the evening was warm, some danced to the music and all enjoyed the ambience of a movie under the stars. Every Saturday evening till September will feature another family movie - preceeded by great music from local groups. Check the schedule of movies - by clicking the graphic ad in the left column - and find a movie you would enjoy. Watching it on the Green with a party atmosphere is a great Saturday evening outing. Bring a blanket or folding chair. And we’ll see you there. Bargains at Independents Sale on Village GreenSaturday, July 1, 2006
From 10 am to 4 pm today - Saturday - you can find great bargains at the annual clearance sale by Fairhaven merchants. Live music on the stage and a festive air to our Historic District all day long. Come on down for a fun and relaxing day - and some great bargains. As you can see, the Green was a fun mixture of people and tables loaded with bargains. It is held each year on the Saturday closest to the 4th of July. |
