Children’s Book Week Event: Tony Robles, JOEY GONZALEZ, GREAT AMERICAN
Joey Gonzalez, Great American is the story of a 9-year-old boy whose dream is to study hard, learn a lot, and grow up to be a great American. But Joe's dream is shattered when his teacher tells him that he's a minority, a little bit different, and that he will have trouble learning. Joey and his friends, Leon and Sandy, tap into the strength, intelligence and courage of their ancestors to challenge negative stereotypes and realize something about ethnic pride, self-reliance and what it means to be an American.

Tony Robles grew up poor in a New York City housing project. His mother taught him that the keys to overcoming poverty are education and diligent work. Robles, a U.S. Navy submarine veteran and retired federal agent who now lives in Bellingham, will share his children's book at Village Books in Fairhaven.

Children’s Book Week Event: Seattle Children’s Book Authors
Go to Village Books this afternoon of Children's Book Week for a trio of Seattle authors of children's books.

In Liz Gallagher's debut YA novel, The Opposite of Invisible, best friends Alice and Jewel find out what it means to be yourself when you're not sure who that is yet.

Gert in Amber Kizer's Gert Garibaldi's Rants and Raves isn't one of those people who believes high school is the best part of life. She has a whole notebook full of rants about high school, and how ridiculous the experience is. A celebrated speaker and teacher from Seattle, Kizer gives writing workshops for all ages, including for teachers.

What I Want to do is Direct by Trudi Trueit is another hilarious and heartwarming adventure starring the spunky middle-grader Julep OToole! The promise of extra credit in English class pushes a nervous Julep to audition for the school play. But after flubbing her tryout, she ends up at the bottom of the list for stage crew. Trueit published more than 40 fiction and non-fiction titles for kids.
