At Village Books, author Miriam Gershow reads from The Local News, a debut novel about Lydia Pasternak, a precocious fifteen-year-old whose life--for better or worse--is irrevocably changed when her older brother, Danny, disappears. Gershow graduated from the Program in Creative Writing at the University of Oregon (and now teaches there) and was a Fiction Fellow at the Wisconsin Institute for Creative Writing.

Now in its 19th year, Dance Gallery's Spring Concert features the works of local, regional and national choreographers coming together to perform (see "More Info" for a list of artists). Winner of a 1999 Mayor's Arts Award, Dance Gallery is a collaborative non-profit company that has performed since 1991 throughout western Washington. With about 25 members from Whatcom and Skagit counties, the group provides opportunities to choreograph, perform and teach modern dance and is open to all levels and ages.
The event includes a silent auction to raise funds for the non-profit arts group.

For nearly two decades, Seattle glass artist Preston Singletary has straddled two unique cultures, melding his Tlingit ancestry with the dynamism of the Studio Glass Movement. In the process, he has created a distinctive and powerful body of work that depicts cultural and historical images in richly detailed, beautifully hued glass. Singletary discusses his art and his book, Preston Singletary: Echoes, Fire, and Shadows, at Village Books today.

When her 7-year-old daughter was swept out to sea by a rogue wave in 1976, Carol Kearns thought she would lose her sanity. Trying to be strong for her 9-year-old son, she met with the late Dr. Elisabeth Kubler-Ross, who taught Kearns "grief therapy" and encouraged her to become a psychologist. In her memoir, Sugar Cookies and a Nightmare, Kearns recalls her 24 years as a grief specialist, corrects a misguided radio host she calls "Dr. Expert," and reveals her own battle with post-traumatic stress disorder after her son, a naval flight surgeon, was deployed to Iraq. Unfolding across six continents--from Puget Sound to Africa's Peace Parks to the forests of Nepal--Fraser's report from the front lines is a comprehensive account of the rewilding revolution. Born in Seattle, Caroline Fraser holds a Ph.D. from Harvard. Formerly on the editorial staff of The New Yorker, she has written for The New Yorker, The Atlantic Monthly, Outside Magazine, Allure, and The Los Angeles Times Book Review, among other publications. She has received a PEN Award for Best Young Writer and numerous prizes for her poetry. She now lives in Santa Fe.

This monthly group, led by Jen from Village Books, explores feminism in a comfortable, empowering environment and is open to anyone that wants to explore feminism--men and women. Today, discuss Passing by Nella Larsen . First published in 1929, this story is about two girlhood friends who are reunited unexpectedly in Chicago to find that they have made opposite choices--one has cut all ties to her past to marry a white man who has no idea of her background, while the other has chosen to stay in an African American community, though still living with lies of a different kind. Larsen shows the limits placed on those who are "too black" and "too feminine" to be recognized by any of the powerful in the 1920s.
