Fairhaven Walking Group
The Fairhaven walking group, sponsored in part by Fairhaven Runners and Walkers, meets every Saturday for a free walk with some friendly folks who like to walk at a variety of paces. The meeting location varies from week to week.

This Saturday, meet at Fairhaven's Village Green and walk the trail to Bellingham's market depot, then back for round-trip.

To inspire community athletes and anyone seeking better physical health, Fairhaven Runners & Walkers (on 11th Street across from Village Books) also hosts free fitness forums each month at the store. World Fair Trade Coffee Break on the Fairhaven Village Green
Aiming to help set a world record for the biggest ever "coffee break," Fair Trade Haven (in Fairhaven, adjacent to the Village Green, next to the Colophon Cafe) and local roaster Moka Joe Coffee will stage a "Fair Trade Coffee Break" in honor of World Fair Trade Day. This will be one of many Fair Trade Coffee Breaks held simultaneously around the world, and will focus on the benefits of fair trade for farmers, consumers, and the environment.

The folks from Fair Trade Haven and Moka Joe will distribute free fair trade coffee and other fair trade goodies. In order to set the world record, the events will have to draw over 5,000 people throughout the U.S. participating at the same time.

In addition to fair trade coffee, anyone who attends can sample fair trade sugar, tea, nuts and chocolate. Information and guides to fair trade will be readily available. Stop by for some great, and fair trade, coffee and othe goodies!

Showing at Artwood Gallery: Woodworker Karl Nielsen
Part of an ongoing celebratation of "20 years in Historic Fairhaven" (the shop/gallery opened May 29, 1988 in the Morgan Block building on the corner of Harris Ave. and 10th St.) Artwood will feature the work of different members each month.

May's featured woodworker is Karl Nielsen, who began his formal training in furniture-making in 1984 and who became an Artwood member in 1989. His work combines teh traditional joinery and construction techniques with a modern design. The curved form of much of his work has become his signature.

Backyard Habitat and Native Flora Fair on the Village Green
Enjoy a full-day in Fairhaven--come early for breakfast or lunch, stay late for some shopping and dinner--and learn about native habitat for your homes.

This annual free event on the Fairhaven Village Green features guided walks and garden tours, presentations on native plants and backyard habitat gardening, information booths, a native plant sale, kids' activities, displays of bird houses, and more. You can also bring your excess plastic garden pots (cleaned and sorted), for recycling.

Backyard tours will be from 11am-3pm, and a map to the site can be picked up at the Village Green any time during the event (10am-4pm) at the Backyard Habitat booth.

You can also join a volunteer effort to certify Bellingham as a Wildlife Friendly Community with the National Wildlife Federation.
Sponsored by Bellingham Parks and Recreation Backyard Habitat Program and the Koma Kulshan Chapter of the Washington Native Plant Society.

As follow-up to the April 24 fitness forum, you are invited to attend a one-day ChiRunning workshop with Master Instructor Mary Lindahl. Literature Live at Village Books: Linda Chalker-Scott with THE INFORMED GARDENER
Are native plants the best choice for sustainable landscaping? Are organic products better or safer than synthetic ones? What is the best way to control weeds--fabric or mulch? Learn Linda Chalker-Scott's discovery of truths that originated in traditional agriculture, that, in many cases, are damaging to both plant and environmental health. Linda Chalker-Scott has spent more than 20 years as a university researcher and educator in the field of plant physiology. She is an urban horticulturist and associate professor at Puyallup Research and Extension Center/Washington State University and the Washington State editor of MasterGardener magazine.

This presentation is just one of the many offered through Village Books' Literature Live program, which also includes a variety of monthly book group discussions (usually sans author). Children’s Book Week Event: Silvana & Sondra Clark, 77 CREATIVE WAYS KIDS CAN SERVE
Children's Book Week, traditionally celebrated nationwide in November, has moved to spring. At Village Books in Fairhaven, join mother and daughter Silvana and Sondra Clark, of Bellingham, for the first Book Week events. Sondra Clark wrote her first book when she was eight-years-old with her mother's encouragement. Her latest book, 77 Creative Ways Kids Can Serve, is great for kids (aged 8-13) who want to get involved in the community and for parents who want to encourage them. Aimed

A junior in high school, Sondra has traveled the world, written eight books, and was the youngest Olympic torch bearer out of 11,000 runners. Silvana Clark has written 11 books, including 12 Going on 29: Surviving Your Daughter's Tween Years with Sondra.

At the Firehouse: Dance Film Series
At the Firehouse Performing Arts Center, 1314 Harris St. in Fairhaven, take in a dance-related movie May 1, 15 and 30, part of the Dance Film Series sponsored by the Bellingham Repertory Dance Company.

The series kicks off May 1st with a showing of the Oscar-nominated documentary featuring the Paul Taylor Dance Company, Dancemaker. Admission is $20 and includes dessert and beverages.

The documentary Ballet Russe will be shown May 15th. And the feature film Billy Elliott will be shown May 30th.
Admission is $7 to these events.

Your Digital Camera, Beyond the Basics--in Fairhaven
Advance your digital camera skills at a class that begins at the Bellingham Cruise Terminal in Fairhaven (at the bottom of Harris Avenue). The morning portion at the Cruise Terminal will include studying light and composition and capturing the world through your camera lens. The afternoon will be spent in Whatcom Community College's computer lab, where you will process and fine-tune your images. A Lunch break from noon to 1pm allows for lunch at one of Fairhaven's great restaurants before heading to the afternoon session at WCC.

Literature Live at Village Books: John Straley with THE BIG BOTH WAYS
An ever popular visitor to Fairhaven and Village Books, John Straley, from Alaska, returns with latest mystery, a heart-stopping adventure up the Inside Passage from Puget Sound to Alaska. Straley is the author of six novels, including The Woman Who Married a Bear, which won the 1993 Shamus Award for best first novel, and Cold Water Burning, short-listed for the Shamus best novel of 2001 award. John Straley is a criminal investigator, a poet, and is currently the Writer Laureate of the State of Alaska.

The Fairhaven walking group, sponsored in part by Fairhaven Runners and Walkers, meets every Saturday for a free walk with some friendly folks who like to walk at a variety of paces. The meeting location varies from week to week.

This Saturday, eet at Lake Padden, at the park entrance by the showers and swimming area (NOT the golf course entrance). Two loops around the lake for 5.2 miles.
Afterward, head back down to Fairhaven to enjoy some of the neighborhood's offerings!

To inspire community athletes and anyone seeking better physical health, Fairhaven Runners & Walkers (on 11th Street across from Village Books) also hosts free fitness forums each month at the store.
