Village Books Readings Gallery: Messages Home
During August and September, the Village Books Readings Gallery (lower level of the store) will have an exhibit of messages home. Since humans first packed up and set forth on a quest, they have been writing about their travels and sending messages home. From way-finding marks along the trail, to graffiti announcing "Kilroy was here" to messages of yearning for loved ones left behind, travelers have sketched, painted, and written about the inner journey of leaving home.

This art show is just one of the many happenings through Village Books, including a variety of monthly book group discussions and author visits. For information on all Village Books and Literature Live events--for kids and adults--visit the store at 1200 11th Street or at VillageBooks.com.

Featured at Good Earth Pottery: Lonnie Schang
Good Earth Pottery in historic Fairhaven (1000 Harris Ave; 360-671-3998) represents more than 50 local artists, and monthly features one artist.

Throughout the month of August see the work of Lonnie Schang, ceramicist and art educator. Schang will be showing a collection of his whimsical sculpture and vessels decorated in sgrafitto-style cartoon images.

Literature Live at Village Books: an Introduction to Laura Kalpakian’s Memoir Writing Class
Join award-winning and much-honored novelist and story writer Laura Kalpakian, who lives in Bellingham and who has been a part of the writing faculty of both WWU, UW and WWU's extended programs. Kalpakian will shareabout the writing journey of a lifetime and talk about her upcoming classes.

Laura Kalpakian, a master of story and character, has received a grant from the National Endowment of the Arts, a Pushcart Prize, the Pacific Northwest Booksellers Association Award (twice), and a PEN/West Award for the Best Short Fiction, among other honors. And her novel Gracedland was made into a TV-film produced by and starring Roseanne Barr. In addition to Memoir Club, Steps and Exes, Educating Waverley and others, Kalpakian's recent novel, American Cookery, is just recently in paperback.

This author event is just one of the many offered through Village Books' Literature Live program, which also includes a variety of monthly book group discussions (usually sans author). By examining attitudes toward money--earning it, spending it, and giving it away-- can offer surprising insight into life, values, and the essense of prosperity.

Paperdoll Boutique & Art Gallery: “Fascination--Portraits in Thread”
August 11 through September 6, Fairhaven's Paperdoll Boutique and Art Gallery (1200 10th Street) presents a new collection of portraits in thread by Libby Chenault. Chenault, recognized regionally for her sustainable crafts and wearable art pieces, puts a flavorful and emotive twist on her newest works in thread. Her works will feature black thread sketches on muslin embellished with small textural details such as vintage fabric, ribbon, and embroidered pie crust.

Contra Dance gathering at Fairhaven Library
Sponsored by Bellingham Country Dance Society, enjoy some Contra dancing at the Fairhaven Library. No partner or experience necessary, but wear soft-sole shoes to to protect the floors at the library and refrain from wearing fragrances.

A workshop begins at 7:30, dancing goes from 8 to 11pm--with live, old-time fiddle music and a caller!

The Big Fairhaven Salmon Barbeque
Fairhaven was famous for this event in the 1980s, and now it's back after a hugely popular return last year!

Whether you're a neighbor or a visitor, come to Fairhaven for the day and take for this big party, on the Village Green, of course. The menu includes Pacific Northwest salmon--cooked by fishermen who know the best barbequing techniques. And the cost includes the salmon, plus delicious sides, like salad, bread, a vegetable, and a beverage. For kids there will be a separate hot-dog meal available.

You can count on great music and other fun, too.

Join Sarah at Village Books in Fairhaven for a monthly discussion of books by and about lesbians. This month talk about Ammonite by Nicola Griffith, about a female anthropologist who tests and studies members--all female-- of an atypical population after a virus destroys all the men on the planet.

Fairhaven Toy Garden Felted Creatures Workshop
Kids (10 and up) and adults can stop by Fairhaven Toy Garden, on the corner of 11th Street and Mill Avenue, to make felted animals and creatures.

Today it's a "Felted Gnome" - the first in the "mythical creatures" series - and it's a good workshop for those new to needle felting.

Fairhaven Runners Waterfront 15K Race
Take part in one of the biggest running events in Bellingham, and one with a huge post-race party at the Fairhaven Village Green. This 9.3-mile loop race features Bellingham Bay's beautiful waterfront trail, with views of the San Juan Islands, Olympic Mountains, and Mount Baker. Finish the USATF-certified course at Fairhaven's Village Green, just a block from the start. Walkers welcome. Presented in partnership with Bellingham Parks & Recreation.

Chuckanut Century Ride for Hospice
The Mount Baker Bicycle Club sponsors this big community ride--for all paces and abilities-- in support of the Whatcom Hospice Foundation. There is a choice of routes from 25, 50, 62, 100 or 124 miles (a metric double century ride), with many riders going through Fairhaven between 7-9am, and later again in the afternoon. The routes encompass the beautiful roads and scenery of Bellingham Bay, Chuckanut Drive, and Whatcom & Skagit counties.

Be the first to read Brisingr by Christopher Paolini. One of the most anticipated books of the season will be available at the first possible moment from Village Books--the moment publishers will allow the books to be sold legally.

Brisingr is the third book in the Inheritance Cycle from Christopher Paolini. The release date/time for the book is 12:01 a.m. on September 20th, and books will be sold at 12:01 a.m. from the big metal door on the Mill Street side of the store's building. Plan to be there for the excitement on the streets of Fairhaven!

RunningShoes.com Mountain Bike Duathlon
Near Fairhaven, just up from the interstate, is Lake Padden Park, where you can have all sorts of oudoor fun before or after visiting the business district. It's also a place for a number of Bellingham Parks & Rec events.

Today, runners and mountain bikers can enjoy a challenging mountain bike duathlon. Run 2.6 miles around the lake, mountain bike the trails above the lake 6 miles, then run 2.6 miles again. There will also be a FREE Youth Duathlon sponsored by the Whatcom YMCA after the race. To register online or print out a registration form, go to www.trithecookie.com.

All sorts of small goblins, princesses, wizards, heroes, animals--and some unidentified creatures--will be swarming the streets of the Historic District during our special event for the little ones. Shops will be decorated for the holiday, and there will be treats for all Downtown Fairhaven.
