Join Sarah at Village Books in Fairhaven for a monthly discussion of books by and about lesbians. This month talk about Landing by Emma Donoghue, an old-fashioned love story with a 21st century twist, a romantic comedy that explores the pleasures and sorrows of long-distance relationships.

VB's Lesbian Book Club meets the first Sunday of every month in the Village Books Readings Gallery; authors do not usually attend the book group discussion.

Literature Live at Village Books: LYNNE MASLAND with 100 YEARS OF CHALLENGE & CHANGE
This afternoon at Village Books on 11th Street in Fairhaven, hear from local Lynne Masland with her book on Whatcom Women and the Bellingham YWCA--a publication to commemorate the YWCA's centennial. Based on intensive research, together with contemporary oral histories, Masland's book captures the challenges and changes in the lives of women in Whatcom County during a momentous century. Proceeds from the book benefit the YWCA transitional housing program for women in crisis.

This author presentation is just one of the many offered through Village Books' Literature Live program, which also includes a variety of monthly book group discussions (usually sans author). Holiday Port Festival & Gingerbread House Contest/Exhibit
The annual Holiday Port Festival at the Bellingham Cruise Terminal in Fairhaven (at 355 Harris Avenue) continues the Fairhaven holiday season with performances by local choirs, bands and dance groups. The festival offers many free activities for families, including horse drawn wagon rides, children's art activities, complimentary gingerbread cookies and cider, and much more! Santa Claus will be on hand to discuss this year's wish lists, and a photographer is available for pictures with Santa. Plan to come to Fairhaven for breakfast, lunch or dinner, some holiday shopping, and a stop at the Holiday Port!

Also part of the festival is the annual Gingerbread House Contest! Creative cooks of all ages may enter their gingerbread structures for free, and contestants compete in one of 10 categories. Contest entries are open for public viewing all three days of the festival, and many participants chose to donate their gingerbread structures to a silent auction that benefits the Mount Baker Chapter of the American Red Cross.

Village Books Readings Gallery: REFLECTIONS
Visit Village Books' Readings Gallery for their exhibit: Reflections. Winter season and the end of the year offer a time for reflection, for giving and thanksgiving, for contemplation of peace-making, prayers, and for resolution. One tradition to that has evolved around resolutions is to write them down, as a reminder of intent, on paper flags and post them for the wind to read. Village Books has created a string of paper flags in the Readings Gallery and invites everyone to join in writing personal messages to add to the flags (blank paper flags provided).

Literature Live at Village Books: HARRY RUTSTEIN with THE MARCO POLO ODYSSEY
Tonight at Village Books, Seattle writer Harry Rutstein presents a slideshow based on his book, The Marco Polo Odyssey: In the Footsteps of a Merchant Who Changed the World. Using every means of travel available--including camels, tractors, horses, and goatskin rafts--Rutstein became the first person known to retrace the 13,000 mile journey from Europe to China of Marco Polo, the great 13th century explorer. His book is a chronicle of the adventure. Rutstein is recognized as a Fellow by The Royal Geographical Society of London and the Explorers Club of New York, has written and presented widely, and has produced a documentary film on the topic.

Between 1 and 3pm, join in the fun, enjoy music, take part in the"nearly new" book sale, and of course, have a piece of birthday cake. Fairhaven's own Dirty Dan Harris will be in attendance, as well as the infamous Grinch! Period costumes are encouraged. Stop by, even if only for a few minutes.

Tonight at Village Books, meet and listen to Seattle's Jay Spenser, wth The Airplane: How Ideas Gave Us Wings, the first definitive technological history of the invention of the airplane. Spenser celebrates the contributions of visionaries who dedicated their lives to making flying an everyday reality, and he also offers a preview of the technology now being introduced by the ultra-efficient Boeing 787 Dreamliner. Jay Spenser has spent a lifetime studying aviation as a curator at the National Air and Space Museum and the Museum of Flight, and more recently as an aerospace industry writer.

Illustrated by San Juan Island artist Bryn Barnard, and written by local authors Andrea von Botefuhr & her sister, Angela Russell, The Land of Smaerd journeys into a world where all things are possible; where dreams literally become reality. This was a 2008 Moonbeam Children's Book Awards Silver Medal winner in the Mind-Body-Spirit category.

Take part in this brief, fun, usually goofy, mid-winter happening in the heart of Fairhaven--at the Fairhaven Village Green! This is an EVERYONE participatory event - and a good antidote for the winter blahs.

Coming to our festival from afar? We have maps for finding our little rainy village.

With rain poetry, rain gear fashion show, music (about rain?), hot drinks (they're wet!), and a rain prediction at noon, this event is all about the weather we love and that makes the PNW home. SKI TO SEA: It All Ends in Fairhaven
The finish for the annual and legendary Ski to Sea Race is celebrated in the heart of Fairhaven with an ALL-DAY party for all ages and tastes, featuring live music, children's fun, a beer garden, arts and craft vendors, ethnic foods and much more! You can also stop in at your favorite Fairhaven businesses to shop, and for lunch or dinner.

From downtown Fairhaven, you can walk down to Fairhaven's Marine Park to watch the kayakers come in off Bellingham Bay for the last leg of the race and the ringing of the bell. At the park you'll find race information, photos, and a number of exhibitors, including some great Fairhaven businesses

Parking can be a challenge at this event, so plan to come early to park and enjoy a full day of it. Or... to make things even easier, you can park at WWU and catch the frequent shuttle to the festivities. Starting at 12 noon a bus leaves every 10 to 15 minutes from the 'C' parking lot (West College Way and Bill McDonald Parkway) on the south end of campus and returns from Fairhaven just as often up to 8 pm. Free parking at the campus and lowe fee for the 5 minute ride. The stop in Fairhaven is at 12th and McKenzie, within one block of the party. It really works. Go Green! Fairhaven Fitness at the Bellingham Tennis Club (800 McKenzie Ave., in Fairhaven) is hosting Ping Pong Sundays the last Sunday of each month through May 2009!
Play for fun, no matter your skill level. Only 4 tables available, so try to pre-register by the Friday before. Minors must be accompanied by parents.
