Fairhaven Runners & Walkers All Paces Run
A NEW Fairhaven Runners & Walkers free weekly drop-in run, the All Paces Run is to help you get fit, get inspired, and have some fun. The store's staff (Steve, Chad, Lindsay, and Tara) will lead a 30- to 45-minute run, open to all paces--from beginners to veterans--starting from the store on 11th Street. Special prizes and awards will be offered along the runs. After, the store invites participants for a warm drink (winter, colder nights) . On the darker nights, a headlamp or flashlight is recommended.

Literature Live at Village Books: DAVID KIBB with GRIZZLY WARS
Tonight at Village Books, meet and listen to David Kibb, author of Grizzly Wars: The Public Fight over the Great Bear. Long a magnificent symbol of the wild, grizzly bears are perhaps the most controversial species in North America. In his book, David Knibb explores policy and political issues involved in managing and attempting to save the grizzly bear. An activist on resource conservation and environment issues for some forty-five years, Kibb is also the author of Backyard Wilderness, a chronicle of the congressional battle over the Alpine Lakes Wilderness in Washington's Cascades.

Cross-training, or performing an exercise with the intent to boost performance in another event, is increasing in popularity. Many athletes use cross-training to prevent injury, recover from injury, and supplement training. So if you are looking for ways to add to your training, exercise through injuries, or just mix things up, learn more about cross-training at Fairhaven Runners & Walkers. Erik Bies, staffer at FR&W and tonight's persenter, is an assistant coach for WWU's cross country and track teams and has a Master's degree exercise physiology.

At the Firehouse: Conversations - a Dance/Theatre Piece
The past three years Pam Kuntz has generated four separate dance/theatre events featuring community members and their compelling stories. On several evenings in January, Kuntz's newest project, "Conversations," focuses on connections between the elderly and the young, with adult participants between the ages of 63 and 93 plus eight participants between the ages of 8 and 14. "Skateboard meets walker" in nine diverse physical explorations of the collision between the young and the aged.

Collaborators include photographer Suzanne Fogarty, composer Brendan Aanes, and dancers Vanessa Wallen, Nicole Byren, and Ben Estes. Community participants include Dennis Catrell, Clarice Wills, Joe Mosier, Noemi Ban, Ruth Glaser, Harriet Napiecinski, Marion Southcott, and Jan Super.

The Fairhaven Walking Club, sponsored by Fairhaven Runners and Walkers, meets every Saturday for a free walk with the store's walking coach, Cindy Paffumi, and some friendly folks who like to walk at a variety of paces. The meeting location varies from week to week but often begins in or near Fairhaven.

This Saturday the walk is at nearby Lake Padden. Meet in front of the bathrooms/showers at the north entrance for two loops around-- 5.2 miles.

After their dance and music workshops elsewhere in Bellingham (Nancy's Farm on E. Smith Road), Goran and Adrijana Alachki from Macedonia will join the Fourth Corner Folk Dancers and Balkan musicians from Seattle for a lively dance party at the Fairhaven Library (1117 12th St.). All ages welcome, no partner necessary. Bring clean soled shoes. Fingerfood welcome.

Tonight at Village Books, meet and listen to Joyce Major, author of Smiling at the World: A Woman's Passionate Yearlong Quest for Adventure and Love. With its spotlight on volunteer travel, Major's ecotourism adventure takes us into hearts and minds as she volunteers with lions, elephants, kangaroos, and baboons. She travels to China to teach English, Italy to work on a restoration project, and heads to New Zealand to work at a sustainability sanctuary. She even volunteers as a reporter in Ireland.

Walking the Gobi describes the journey Helen and her husband took across 1,600 miles of unforgiving desert, and the rewards that perseverance and pursuing adventure bring.

Literature Live at Village Books: A Tribute to poet William Stafford
Tonight at Village Books, be part of a tribute to poet William Stafford, put on by The Friends of William Stafford (from Portland), with local peot Jim Bertolino as emcee. One of the best-known and loved American poets, Stafford served as Poetry Consultant to the Library of Congress, received the National Book Award for Traveling Through the Dark, and taught for many years at Lewis & Clark College in Portland. He grew up in Kansas, was a conscientious objector during World War II, and was widely admired for his generosity. The program will open with poems recorded at Stafford's last public reading. Several local poets will talk about Stafford and read brief selections of his poems, and then audience members will be invited to read one of Stafford's poems.

At the Firehouse: Conversations - a Dance/Theatre Piece
The past three years Pam Kuntz has generated four separate dance/theatre events featuring community members and their compelling stories. On several evenings in January, Kuntz's newest project, "Conversations," focuses on connections between the elderly and the young, with adult participants between the ages of 63 and 93 plus eight participants between the ages of 8 and 14. "Skateboard meets walker" in nine diverse physical explorations of the collision between the young and the aged.

Collaborators include photographer Suzanne Fogarty, composer Brendan Aanes, and dancers Vanessa Wallen, Nicole Byren, and Ben Estes. Community participants include Dennis Catrell, Clarice Wills, Joe Mosier, Noemi Ban, Ruth Glaser, Harriet Napiecinski, Marion Southcott, and Jan Super.

Sponsored by Bellingham Country Dance Society, enjoy some Contra dancing at the Fairhaven Library. No partner or experience necessary, but wear soft-sole shoes to to protect the floors at the library and refrain from wearing fragrances.

A workshop begins at 7:30, dancing goes from 8 to 11pm--with Unleased, from Portland, playing and Gordy Euler calling-- join the fun, bring an instrument or call some dances.

Literature Live at Village Books: RICHARD LEWIS with HAM ON WRY
This afternoon at Village Books, welcome Fairhaven poet, Richard Lewis, who will read from his two-volume collection of The Best of Ham on Wry as published in his weekly column for the Whatcom Independent 2005-2008. Using puns and other forms of wordplay in penning his rhyming parodies and satires of Whatcom County events and personalities, the author has produced an amusing if uncommon treatment of local history over the past four years. He has been writing light verse for twenty years and has previously published two chapbooks of verse.
