Long a magnificent symbol of the wild, grizzly bears are perhaps the most controversial species in North America. An activist on resource conservation and environment issues for some forty-five years, Kibb is also the author of Backyard Wilderness, a chronicle of the congressional battle over the Alpine Lakes Wilderness in Washington's Cascades. "Skateboard meets walker" in nine diverse physical explorations of the collision between the young and the aged. Collaborators include photographer Suzanne Fogarty, composer Brendan Aanes, and dancers Vanessa Wallen, Nicole Byren, and Ben Estes. Community participants include Dennis Catrell, Clarice Wills, Joe Mosier, Noemi Ban, Ruth Glaser, Harriet Napiecinski, Marion Southcott, and Jan Super. More info? Saturday, January 17 || 7pm || freeLiterature Live at Village Books: A Tribute to poet William StaffordTonight at Village Books, be part of a tribute to poet William Stafford, put on by The Friends of William Stafford (from Portland), with local peot Jim Bertolino as emcee. One of the best-known and loved American poets, Stafford served as Poetry Consultant to the Library of Congress, received the National Book Award for Traveling Through the Dark, and taught for many years at Lewis & Clark College in Portland. He grew up in Kansas, was a conscientious objector during World War II, and was widely admired for his generosity. The program will open with poems recorded at Stafford's last public reading. Several local poets will talk about Stafford and read brief selections of his poems, and then audience members will be invited to read one of Stafford's poems. If you would like to be included in the program, either arrive early to sign up, or call Jim Bertolino at 398-7870. On several evenings in January, Kuntz's newest project, "Conversations," focuses on connections between the elderly and the young, with adult participants between the ages of 63 and 93 plus eight participants between the ages of 8 and 14. "Skateboard meets walker" in nine diverse physical explorations of the collision between the young and the aged. Collaborators include photographer Suzanne Fogarty, composer Brendan Aanes, and dancers Vanessa Wallen, Nicole Byren, and Ben Estes. Community participants include Dennis Catrell, Clarice Wills, Joe Mosier, Noemi Ban, Ruth Glaser, Harriet Napiecinski, Marion Southcott, and Jan Super. More info? Using puns and other forms of wordplay in penning his rhyming parodies and satires of Whatcom County events and personalities, the author has produced an amusing if uncommon treatment of local history over the past four years. He has been writing light verse for twenty years and has previously published two chapbooks of verse. This author presentation is just one of the many offered through Village Books' Literature Live program, which also includes a variety of monthly book group discussions (usually sans author).
