At the Firehouse: Dance Film Series
At the Firehouse Performing Arts Center, 1314 Harris St. in Fairhaven, take in a dance-related movie May 1, 15 and 30, part of the Dance Film Series sponsored by the Bellingham Repertory Dance Company.

The series kicks off May 1st with a showing of the Oscar-nominated documentary featuring the Paul Taylor Dance Company, Dancemaker. Admission is $20 and includes dessert and beverages.

The documentary Ballet Russe will be shown May 15th. And the feature film Billy Elliott will be shown May 30th.
Admission is $7 to these events.

Your Digital Camera, Beyond the Basics--in Fairhaven
Advance your digital camera skills at a class that begins at the Bellingham Cruise Terminal in Fairhaven (at the bottom of Harris Avenue). The morning portion at the Cruise Terminal will include studying light and composition and capturing the world through your camera lens. The afternoon will be spent in Whatcom Community College's computer lab, where you will process and fine-tune your images. A Lunch break from noon to 1pm allows for lunch at one of Fairhaven's great restaurants before heading to the afternoon session at WCC.

Iinstructor Ana Cecilia Dominguez Jackson returns to Pacific Chef to combine the catch of the day with the flavors of Mexico! Fairhaven Toy Garden Felted Creatures Workshop

The African Animals series culminates with two classes in May: create a felted parrot on 5/17, and a felted lion on 5/24. After that, the Toy Garden workshops will take a break until September.

Literature Live at Village Books: John Straley with THE BIG BOTH WAYS
An ever popular visitor to Fairhaven and Village Books, John Straley, from Alaska, returns with latest mystery, a heart-stopping adventure up the Inside Passage from Puget Sound to Alaska. Straley is the author of six novels, including The Woman Who Married a Bear, which won the 1993 Shamus Award for best first novel, and Cold Water Burning, short-listed for the Shamus best novel of 2001 award. John Straley is a criminal investigator, a poet, and is currently the Writer Laureate of the State of Alaska.

Friends of the Firehouse Keyboard Concerts showcase Washington musicians at the Firehouse Performing Arts Center, 1314 Harris St., in Fairhaven. The Fairhaven walking group, sponsored in part by Fairhaven Runners and Walkers, meets every Saturday for a free walk with some friendly folks who like to walk at a variety of paces. The meeting location varies from week to week.

This Saturday, eet at Lake Padden, at the park entrance by the showers and swimming area (NOT the golf course entrance). Two loops around the lake for 5.2 miles.
Afterward, head back down to Fairhaven to enjoy some of the neighborhood's offerings!

To inspire community athletes and anyone seeking better physical health, Fairhaven Runners & Walkers (on 11th Street across from Village Books) also hosts free fitness forums each month at the store. SKI TO SEA: It All Ends in Fairhaven!
The finish for the annual and legendary Ski to Sea Race is celebrated in the heart of Fairhaven with an ALL-DAY party for all ages and tastes, featuring live music, children's fun, a beer garden, arts and craft vendors, ethnic foods and much more! You can also stop in at your favorite Fairhaven businesses to shop, and for lunch or dinner.

From downtown Fairhaven, you can walk down to Fairhaven's Marine Park to watch the kayakers come in off Bellingham Bay for the last leg of the race and the ringing of the bell. At the park you'll find race information, photos, and a number of exhibitors, including some great Fairhaven businesses

Parking can be a challenge at this event, so plan to come early to park and enjoy a full day of it. Or... to make things even easier, you can park at WWU and catch the frequent shuttle to the festivities. Starting at 12 noon a bus leaves every 10 to 15 minutes from the 'C' parking lot (West College Way and Bill McDonald Parkway) on the south end of campus and returns from Fairhaven just as often up to 8 pm. Free parking at the campus and only a dollar for the 5 minute ride. The stop in Fairhaven is at 12th and McKenzie, within one block of the party. It really works. Go Green! Showing at Artwood Gallery: Woodworker Karl Nielsen
Part of an ongoing celebratation of "20 years in Historic Fairhaven" (the shop/gallery opened May 29, 1988 in the Morgan Block building on the corner of Harris Ave. and 10th St.) Artwood will feature the work of different members each month.

May's featured woodworker is Karl Nielsen, who began his formal training in furniture-making in 1984 and who became an Artwood member in 1989. His work combines teh traditional joinery and construction techniques with a modern design. The curved form of much of his work has become his signature.

Instructor Cindy McKinney will present all new recipes as well as the traditional basil/pinenut classic. You will learn how to make the perfect pesto, use it in recipes, and freeze it effectively so you can enjoy its amazing flavor all year long. Cindy's new herb blends include an Asian pesto, an Italian parsley and toasted pecan pesto, and an artichoke and lemon pesto. At Village Books tonight, get your hands metaphorically dirty while learning from gardening guru Geri Larkin. Plant Seed, Pull Weed: Nurturing the Garden of Your Life intertwines the seasonal aspects of gardening, from planning and planting to nurturing and maintenance, with spiritual practice. Geri Larkin gave up a career as a management consultant to start a Zen meditation center in the heart of inner-city Detroit. She is the author of Stumbling Toward Enlightenment, The Chocolate Cake Sutra, Building a Business the Buddhist Way, and The Still Point Dhammapada. A Zen Buddhist "Guiding Teacher." She currently lives in Eugene, Oregon.
