Look closely - for the hint of something nice

Saturday, September 16, 2006

Just a straight photo of Chuckanut Square - the ‘60s Bellingham Housing Authority complex in Fairhaven.  Located right on the edge of our Historic District - and a building we try to mentally block out when looking at the beauty of our district. Well - look closely at the top right of this photo - see that brick red paint?  Ebenal General is working with the Housing Authority to repaint the building so it better fits into our district.  Several colors will be used during the repainting - colors chosen by a designer who is working with Ebenal.  We can all enjoy watching this project progress over the next weeks.

Flats Featured in Fortune Magazine

Thursday, August 31, 2006

Flat’s Tapas in Fairhaven was mentioned in the August 30th online article in Fortune Magazine for its use of local foods as part of a story on Sustainable Connections.

Mentioned was the flatbread with all-local smoked salmon, caramelized apple, gouda cheese and hazelnuts.  The magazine lauded Whatcom County for supporting local businesses.  Flat’s owner, Rich McCudden prepares onions in this photo taken earlier this year by Taimi Dunn Gorman.  Click here to view the full article. Seatle PI features Fairhaven as Getaway

Friday, August 11, 2006

A nice article on why Fairhaven is a great weekend getaway destination for Seattle folks was in Thursday’s ‘Getaway’ magazine insert.  The writer - Gordy Holt - quotes me about an event that took place here 37 years ago, but most of the article is why Fairhaven is so much fun to visit today.  The PI has the article posted online for your easy reading, including some of the photos.  Gordy was up in Fairhaven on a visit a few weeks ago and was surprised at how the sleepy south side of Bellingham was so alive with new and fun things.  His article reflects his delight in what he found here.

Early morning cleaning of streets - by volunteers

Friday, August 4, 2006

Property owners and business owners met at 6:30 this morning to sweep the gutters and streets of the central Historic District.  Several of them do this several times a year.  Those working this morning don’t want public credit, but their first names are Rick, Tim, Debbie, Ham, Ken, Chuck, Brad, Ray, John and Sam.  And yes, they swept up more than dirt - like nails, glass and a lot of small junk.  We have a busy district and thus repeated cleanup is needed.  The charm and ambience are enhanced by clean sidewalks and streets.  Our thanks to the ten this morning and we hope we have many more next time.  We will post the notice here and Taimi will again send it to all on her business mailing list.

The Waldron building exposed

Wednesday, July 26, 2006

An underground parking garage will occupy this excavated space.  It will serve the condo tenants in the refurbished Waldron building - shown - and the Young building which will rise above the small yellow backhoe in the photo.  Where those fellows are walking is the “center” of McKenzie Avenue - or was.  Yes, it will all be put back and we will again have our McKenzie - with a parking garage below.  I’ll try for this same angle of photo when the buildings are finished next year.  Those top three floors will each have two residential condos.  Ebenal General is doing this amazing transformation of one of our oldest buildings.  If you are interested, click on their ad in the right side column.

New shops opening soon

Monday, July 24, 2006

East-West Fashion - a moment of thought about the name reveals what it is - women’s clothing with the styles of India.  Plus Africa and of course with our American influence.  Paula Sohal opens her shop this weekend in the Ebenal’s new Fairhaven Gardens building at Mill and 12th.  She will be on the Finnegan Way level, across the street from the Fairhaven Library.  She invites all to visit her shop this weekend and will have some fun treats.

Quel Fromage, opening in October, will be a fully stocked cheese shop in the 12th Street Village - 4 blocks down at the other end of our district.  Rachel Riggs brings her life long love of cheeses to this new shop.  She will be right next to Spoiled Rotten and Vie Boutique on the 12th Street side.  Well, as this writer is from Wisconsin, I am looking forward to this opening.

Key Bank provides us with their summer BBQ

Friday, July 21, 2006

Key Bank picked a perfect day for their annual barbque.  And locals kept coming by for two hours today for the welcome eats.  Key Bank is our oldest Fairhaven bank, being established in the same location for - well, I remember them 30 years ago.  It was Bellingham National Bank back then, but they have been serving some of their clients for all of those 30 some years.  And they came by today.  Here Mary encourages a client to take advantage of the spread.  Our thanks to Richelle and her staff for the fine lunch.

The patio outside their new offices is perfect for a summer BBQ.  Each year Whidbey Island Bank invites their customers - and others - to their social and picnic.  Whidbey opened in Fairhaven four years ago and have become nicely involved in our Historic District.  This noon many of us enjoyed their fine spead of eats and meeting old friends.

The A&W Asian Bistro will open in the new Fairhaven Gardens building at Mill and 12th late in July.  Jimmy Mui, one of three owners and the chief cook, said the menu will feature several countries’ foods, including Thailand, China, Vietnam and Japan.  A beautiful 20 foot long Sushi bar is being built.  Fairhaven’s has been without an Asian restaurant for several years.  The A&W Asian Bistro will further enhance our reputation as THE dining district for Bellingham and even North Puget Sound.  Welcome to Fairhaven, Jimmy.

This website has been undergoing a massive renovation these past few months - as most regular readers know.  Well, I’m pleased to tell you that all the old Buzz posts and all the Home Page news posts have now been keyed into their respective archives.  You can browse or scan headlines or you can do a keyword search for old articles.  If you are a Fairhaven business, you might check for your name or business name - just for fun.  More old stuff is still being posted up.  All the special pages, from the dedication of the Village Green to last February’s Rain Fest, will now be uploaded.  I hope you are enjoying the increased access to Fairhaven info in this revised website.  - John Servais

Fairhaven gets radio exposure

Tuesday, June 6, 2006

Small world.  Rob Olason - on the left - the owner of Trek Video and a 20 plus year Fairhaven business person also fills in for talk shows on KGMI radio.  He actually is on every Friday with movie reviews.  Well, he invited yours truly, John Servais, to come on his show today and talk about Fairhaven.com and how regional websites can be useful to folks.  Twas a fun hour.  Rob is a smooth host and led me into various topics.  No question - it was a great break to publicize this website to the whole county.  Thanks Rob and thanks KGMI.
